Sure, you'll laugh so hard you might squirt Diet Coke out of your nose. But 'Brüno' also leaves you with a very bad aftertaste.

Oh, please! I just saw Bruno a couple days ago, and I thought it was fantastic. (And I am gay.) There's never a dull moment. The entire movie is meant to be fun, over-the-top, and outrageous. I can't imagine that any sane person would think that Bruno is supposed to represent all gay men. Lighten up and laugh a little!

I'm looking forward to seeing it again, and owning the DVD when it's released.

I refuse to pay up to twenty bucks to watch a movie whose artistic merit is one that I find repulsive even though I respect it as a form of art. I will wait for it to come out on DVD and then find out for myself if my intuition is correct (which is that it would most likely offend me horribly like Borat did). What I found repulsive is not so much as the crude humor (I have three sons and believe me, having them around has made me immune to crass humor) but the deceptive, mean, and almost bully like manner in which Baron uses to dupe people in order to make them look like completely utter fools. It embarasses me, and makes me feel sad that the methods he use is so accepted by the audience as fun humor to watch, and I believe this is why bullying behaviour in schools and public in general is becoming so rampant. Baron's movies are sending a nonverbal message to people with low empathy/sympathy intelligence that being a bully to get laughs is acceptable behaviour. But then, art is in the eye of the beholder-right?

This was seriously the worst movie I've ever seen. Unfortunately I will never get the time back. I saw this movie at the pre-screening the night before with many young fans of the Borat movie. Upon interviewing the crowd after the movie not one person liked the movie and infact all were offended by it regardless of their sexual orientation or sex. The biggest shocks in this R rated movie was seeing Sasha Baron Cohen dance around nude in his premiere video and when he acts out pleasuring his dead lover from Milli Vanilli. How this movie escaped the NC-17 rating I will never know. Is this what the future holds for our rating system...

"Most people think homosexuality is gross" I personally think that intolerance, bigotry and ignorance are gross. You are gross. I'd rather be in a sports stadium filled to the rafters with french-kissing homosexual males than spend even a second in your dim-witted, hate filled, B.O. infested presence.
Nature also doesn't want stupid creatures to mate, cf. Darwinism (yes, it's science, it's not a theory put forward by the father of an invisible zombie), but I bet that doesn't stop by flopping all over your big fat white trash wife, does it?

    • Posted By: omyfudge @ 07/13/2009 2:59:53 PM

"Nature also doesn't want stupid creatures to mate, cf. Darwinism (yes, it's science, it's not a theory put forward by the father of an invisible zombie"

uh, last time i checked it was called "The theory of evolution" not "The law of evolution" bobbo

It's hilarious to me that people are so quick to put their faith on science as the end all be all answer to everything, yet they ridicule others for their beliefs. Not discrediting science at all or undermining scientific research, but if people stopped looking at religion in such a cynical manner they might see that there are important lessons to be learned there as well.

    S. B. Cohen overplays the stereotype for laughs because that's how most homophobic people think gay people act. Bruno doesn't have to be gay to be trying to get into the tent nude, if Cohen had played Bruno extremely straight would they have been "weirded out?" No they wouldn't have, they would have laughed about it. Is the audience creeped out by Bruno being gay or by him being so effeminate? Homophobia is outrageously prevalent and not enough good people stand up to it. Example: In my town a 20 year man with down syndrome last Halloween was beaten unconscious into a bloody mess by 15 teen boys because they thought he was gay for the way he was acting. A woman and her 2 kids were on the opposite sidewalk and she called the police while taking her kids to the house to shield them from the violence. When the woman opened the door the first woman told her what was happening and the woman and her husband said they already knew but they weren???t ???going to stop it because they were just boys being boys beating up a ***.??? When the police arrived they questioned the five duplexes and all of the people said they seen and heard what was happening but nobody called 911 or the police. When the mother (witness) told the judge and jury she saw them raping him there was complete silence in the courtroom. After the trial was finished only one of the punks felt remorse when he said he ???wouldn???t have participated if he knew the man wasn???t a homo.??? Not even the parents felt sorry because they defended their kids. I think the jurors were sick to their stomachs. If I was one of the jurors I probably would have jumped over the partition and strangled the punks. So after Bruno is seen by the audience, who cares how over the top Cohen plays his character because no one gets this angry over seeing a straight character beat or rape or murder another character and the audience doesn???t walk away thinking everyone who looks and acts like this straight character is going to ???get them.??? Why not, what???s the difference? Any answers?

"A generation of straight teen guys will hit the summer multiplex to hoot at Brüno, and they'll probably think of the lecherous sexual predator the next time they meet a gay person. " -- Just like they'll think all Kazakhstanians practice "The Running of the Jew" and defecate into plastic bags from watching Borat. Every scene in Cohen's movie isn't supposed to point out homophobia or make a point. The movie employs an outrageous character who was designed to get into over-the-top situations and to make people squirm (much like Andy Kaufman) for comedic effect. It was made to entertain and produce a profit first and foremost and subsequently splash a little social commentary here and there. Your review has read way too much into this summer comedy and you are giving no credit whatsoever to the audience and what they will take away from the movie, if anything..

Um, people display a perfectly natural reaction to an unnatural act, and that makes them "hateful"? Get a clue, La-La Brain. Most people think homosexuality is gross, and that's what nature intended because - NEWS FLASH - NATURE DOESN'T WANT CREATURES OF THE SAME GENDER TO MATE. THAT'S WHY MOST PEOPLE ARE REPULSED BY THE IDEA. It's got nothing to do with culture, religion, or demographics. Got it now? I swear, political correctness is the new social disease!

    • Posted By: pxtot @ 07/09/2009 6:25:15 PM

      Let's analyze this:

What EXACTLY is it that you find "disgusting" about gay sex? ravcasleygera's link helpfully points out that there are plenty of animals who engage in homosexual acts, so forget the "unnatural" argument, and the "Word of God" argument is a lame-ass cop-out. The Word of God also says that you should sacrifice unblemished lambs and avoid pork and shellfish, but I'll bet you don't do any of that.

So what EXACTLY is "disgusting" about gay sex? Because I think you homophobes are really just neanderthal deep-dyed sexists who think that a man is a man and a woman is a woman, and goddamit, a man should always be on top, because it's "disgusting" to be a woman, even figuratively.

      • Posted By: dangerousdesklamp @ 07/10/2009 7:17:06 AM

Okay, so your response to anti-homosexuality attitudes is to be obnoxious, rude, and accuse those who hold a differing view from yours of sexism? For the record, I'm against homosexuality and I happen to be a female. And no, I don't hate my own femaleness.

        • Posted By: pxtot @ 07/10/2009 6:08:48 PM

What's your "differing view" here? Are you suggesting that whether or not it's OK to hate gays is a matter of opinion? It's astonishing the way you bigots have co-opted lefty diversity-speak as a way to legitimate your bigotry. And Phyllis Schlafly is a woman too, but there's no denying that she's sexist and self-hating.

I also notice that although you say that you are "against homosexuality," you didn't answer my question: What EXACTLY about gay sex do you find so objectionable? Plenty of straight people engage in exactly the same acts, so what's the problem?

    • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 07/09/2009 6:04:53 PM

People who are repulsed by the idea of gay people MIGHT just react that way because of their cultural conditioning... because that reaction isn't universal. There is a lot of research strongly suggesting that homosexuality is innate, that it is not a matter of choice at all... a conclusion I think is rather obvious anyway, after a moment's reflection about what it was like to be a teenager (straight or not). I remember when it seemed like the MOST important thing in the world to fit in, to be like our friends, or at the least to be accepted by our peers... can you really imagine, at that point in your life, CHOOSING to adopt an attitude or lifestyle nearly certain to cause your own peer group to revile and reject you? Yet that is precisely when most of the gay people I personally know (in fact, all of those I've actually talked to about this subject... perhaps half a dozen individuals) came to realize that they WERE gay. Nearly all of them specifically told me that they would have done almost anything, at that time in their lives, NOT to be homosexual, and I believe them. As for what is "natural", if you think homosexuality doesn't occur elsewhere in nature, besides humanity, you just aren't paying attention.

    see sherf.com?

no one wants you around.... hows that feel to just be deleted?

you spew nothing but hate and intollerance for anyone and anything different than your personal views.

    • Posted By: bobhoskins1 @ 07/10/2009 4:16:44 PM

You know, they say that those who react to homosexuality in extremely negative ways are the ones most likely to be struggling with repressed homosexual tendencies themselves. I really think all of the comical gay bashers posting here are really just jealous because they never had the guts to come out of the closet and embrace their latent manlust.

    • Posted By: scherf.com @ 07/09/2009 2:30:39 PM

No, we just complimented the makers of BRÜNO as they show exactly how disgusting the gay community is. This small random group of gays and lesbians just want to deceive the masses and seduce our teenage boys and girls so that they can live out their weird evil sexual perversion. And Cohen just shows the typical gay maie just as gays have portrayed themselves in the gay pride parades for decades. Brüno is just a mirror image of what a gay male does and/or want to do. And this film also shows that the majority of people all around the world don't want to be around gay folk and most people are disgusted by this vicious perverted lifestyle. Gays are still a very small minority in the world, because their habits and sexual behavior is unnatural, ... not even animals behave like that. Watch BRÜNO and you realize that homophobia is a very good thing, because homosexuals are just disgusting.

tell me, smurfette, how do you feel about watching 2 women have sexual relations? how do you feel about having anal sex with your girlfriend/wife?

This piece misses the point. The fact that Bruno is so funny is precisely because it makes fun of homosexuals, and their superficial love of celebrity, cattiness, etc. The fact that it has some truth in in, and exaggerates a bit, is exactly what makes it funny. You are not happy looking in the mirror is all.

  • Posted By: david123s @ 07/10/2009 12:26:45 PM

I think homosexuality is depressing. This movie is very funny though. Let all opinons be heard

I'm with SG - all the critics who thought Borat was good need their heads examined. You all claimed he was showing up American xenophobia and uber politeness and sneaky racism. But Cohen was the racist in that film. I found the entire movie bereft of intellgience and never did get the Ali G show, either.

"I saw a nature show where a male horse killed a baby one because it was injured and he was not the father. Are you suggesting that those behaviors should be emulated by humans as well?" In your case, yes, since you are obviously irreversibly brain damaged...

  • Posted By: dangerousdesklamp @ 07/10/2009 7:13:10 AM

Someone said, "What EXACTLY is it that you find "disgusting" about gay sex? ravcasleygera's link helpfully points out that there are plenty of animals who engage in homosexual acts,"
The black widow eats her male mate after they copulate. Some animals eat their young. I saw a nature show where a male horse killed a baby one because it was injured and he was not the father. Are you suggesting that those behaviors should be emulated by humans as well?

I think I find this article hypocritical. To say that Borat is okay and Burno is not is stupidly hypocritical. What needs to happens is that both movies should be condemned. Just like your feeling attacked right now with his latest movie Burno, others felt the same way with the movie Borat. People will take you more serious in life, and listen to your point of view when your not hypocritical. People are told to be tolerant of different view points, but it seems to me that if your view point isn???t socially acceptable with pop culture then you can???t express it and your automatically wrong. I???m so thankful we have the freedom of the press!! There???s no excuse for either movie, so please also remember to add that to the next article.

  • Posted By: sutliff @ 07/09/2009 12:12:27 PM

@cbt7 Did you read the article? Yes, Cohen is trying to point this out to us, but is doing it in an absurd and hurtful manner. He is pushing it to the point where anyone would be offended - gay or not, homophobic or not.

For Setoodeh - "who are so blonde, they've never heard of Darfur" - watch it on the stereotypes! Leave that to Cohen.

  • Posted By: cbt7 @ 07/09/2009 11:00:04 AM

Are you all stupid or something? Baron Cohen is not just doing all this just to do it. He does this to show the world how homophobic we really are, or how discriminatory. He's not trying to get cheap laughs. It amazed me when I watched his show and he made people look like fools, and now he makes all of you look like fools too, because you just don't get it.

    • Posted By: hlgns763 @ 07/09/2009 11:49:01 AM

right on, like sherf.com over here, he/she/it doesnt understand.

its an attack on both sides, flamboyantly homosexuals that loudly and arrogantly profess they're sexuality then wonder why people hate them, and its an attack on ignorant, unaccepting people like sherf.com that think they are the end all be all to moral righteousness.

  • Posted By: Celtia @ 07/09/2009 9:41:03 AM

I have never understood why anyone finds Cohen funny. He's just a dressed up shock jock who uses a camera instead of a microphone to pretend to have something important to say. If you have talent you don't need to offend or gross out. If you don't you make Cohen's movies.

  • Posted By: gongdew1 @ 07/09/2009 9:12:29 AM

Hey, what can you say to a people who believe "BRÜNO" is a social documentary? Good Luck!
