    I've got to say I am incredibly pleased with the Pope so far, and I'm an atheist. I am even more pleased that he and the President of the USA are not allowing wedge issues to distract them from bigger problems.

      Pope PiusxII met with Hitler . Did that mean he agreed with him/? Of course not. The president is a champion of the culture of death(Abortion , euthanasia, embryonic stem cll research). What could be more important than life? The truth is that we allowing/ implementing abortion on scale unimaginable . Some say 40 million a year . Since the 50's about 2 billion surgical abortions . And how many in chemical abortions. I'm not just talking about ru-486 but also in birth control.In case you didn't know BC stops ovulation, makes it more difficult for sperm to fertilize the egg. When that fails an d fertilization does occur you have a newly conceived human being that won't be able to attach itself to the uterus because the lining is too irritated for implantation.

    The political BIAS of Newsweek and its author is OBVIOUS ! Just read the last sentence: "those conservative Catholics who have been spewing vitriol at Obama will really be gnashing their teeth."
    Isn't he full of hate or disgust towards "conservative Catholics"?!

    I've been reading eyewitness accounts from thos ein the Vatican who received orders from His Holiness and from Mother Superiors of convents ta the time. He did apologize for not publicly doing more to get the Vatican sacked and have an Antipope installed by Hitler but behind Hitler's back, he was saving lives. What History sources ahve you been reading, any eyewitness accounts, perhaps from Jews who were there, cause I got those too.

    This is the reason I don't trust the Vatican. They looked the other way in WW II and now, the one group that should be vocal about abortion, is, once again for political and financial resaons, looking the other way.

      Looked the other Way?! What history book did you read? The Vatican was trying to get as many Jews out of there as possible saving thousands of lives in the process. What would have preferred, have the Third Reich versus the Swiss Guards. I can tell you who would win that one quick. Afterwards, thousands of those savd Jews would be dead. We were hiding them in our convents and our monasteries and encouraging our priest to fight them the only way we could. The Holy See is not dumb eiether, we've been around for thousands of years, we've been sacked for taking sides before, two many times to count at this moment. We learn from our mistakes, and we did what we had to do to save lives. That's like asking hostages, I know they had a gun on you, why didn't you escape. DUMB, DUMB!

    Here's what L'Osservatore Romano said after its initial coverage of Obama's speech at Notre Dame raised eyebrows: "[The newspaper] certainly did not intend to express appreciation for [Obama???s] positions on ethical questions.

    Obviously the Holy See and L'Osservatore Romano have been, are, and will be standing side by side with the bishops of the United States in their commitment to the inviolability of human life in whatever stage of its existence.???

    However popular Obama currently is at the Vatican, I can assure you that he would be more popular if he were more pro-life.

    It seems there will be 'gnashing of teeth' and a lof of frustration,
    if we truly believe that we know best. That we know best about a stranger's personal situation in life.

    What we know for sure is that if we outlaw abortion and make it illegal, women from all social backgrounds will die performing them on their own and without hospital services, as they have down the centuries.

    Europeans are a complex mix, and they grock that this is a complex choice issue. Don't we all wish that abortion was a non-issue in the 21st century?

    Myself, i carefully escort insects from our house and set them free outside, and do not eat any kind of meat, so you know how this one feels about life and the sacredness of life. But respectfully, this is a very complex issue. This is a decision for each family, mother and woman to make. Others do not know your personal situation and will not live with any of your decisions at the end of the day.

    If parents would teach their children STD 's (using graphic pics/ video of results) and responsibilities about sex that would greatly reduce abortions. That's much more accurate, I think. Kind of like showing a horror to flick to kids, but it will usually scare'em straight. I'd say practicing discipline and self-control, helps alot too from early on. They can get into the practice.

Newsweek needs to wipe the brown off their noses and get with the reality of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA people that are CITIZENS of this great god loving nation. You know... you only look worse when you bad-mouth the other news groups, including but not limited to, the FOX New Channel. Obama and his left wing Kool-Aid drinkers need to stop trying to wipe out the US CITIZENS' rights as CITIZENS and start trying to do something constructive, for once, for all the folks who are now UNEMPLOYED. Obama needs to stay out of the government owning big business and stop bailing them out. Big business either needs to sink or swim, just like the rest of us. Any stimulus needs to go directly to the CITIZENS of the United States of America. I know our forefathers are rolling over in their graves to see what this great nation is rapidly becoming!!! My advise to you Mr. Winters is that you sweep around your own back door and stop trying to spread this poison that is spewing from you. Wake up dude!!

    I agree with the article. Obama read a lot of catholic theologians in his youth. He has some of the foundations of Catholicism in his Praxis. I really which that Anglo-American Catholics finally separate themselves from the stupid idea that being republican is true to their faith. Only then they will start caring for the poor and finally start showing the mercy of God.

      As a practicing catholic who has learned much of the churches teachings I can tell you that birth control is not condoned as a suitable alternative. It separates the unitve and procreative aspects of sex and attacks the dignity of women. It breaks the marriage vows and does not allow for the full loving and giving on one spouse to another.

    Bravo, Newsweek. With a meeting between POTUS and the Pope pending, you have provided an interesting perspective that contrasts Euro point of view with that of the US. I wish you had stated that the right-wing stress of American Catholic bishops is not necessarily reflective of mainstream American Catholicism, but that distinction can wait for a later opportunity. And yes, Euro Catholics are indeedd resigned to the fact that open abortion laws will not be overturned - so they work cooperatively with all persons in order to greatly reduce the need for abortion to begin with. Thumpers in teh US have yet to come to that very logical and beneficial conclusion. Too bad. Bravo Newsweek......

    Mr Winters sounds like an Anti-Catholic. He is wrong that the European Catholic clergy have "resigned" themselves to abortion! He for gets quickly that abortion is a holocaust worst than the one in Germany during the Second World War! To say any Catholic has resigned themselves to abortion, especially clergy at the Vatican, is like saying, Roosevelt, Churchhill and the Allied leaders were comfortable with the holocaust permeated by the Germans!
