Judging from their statements, it is clear to me that paul946111 has a much better understanding of the classification process than does Brakus72. I, too, spent many years dealing with classified materials and the classification process. In those years, I have observed classification officers label material "classified" just to cover their or their boss's incompetence,or to save themselves embarrassment. In some cases, those who should have known better confused individual loyalty with loyalty to the institution. Still, there are alway a few individuals, within a system, who will sacrifice values, ethics and moral courage for theological purity. Fortunately, the number is small but they should dealt with harshly and purged from the system. These are the people who would do harm to our government system because, bottom line, they don't really believe in it.

The former Vice-President, Dick Cheney stated that the biggest accomplishment of the Bush administration was to broaden the powers of the executive branch and that any future President would be unwilling to voluntarily give them up. He was right. Under the Bush administration the signing statement was used as one of the means to say, we don't care about the will of the congress or the express will of the judiciary, we are going to do what we want and there is nothing you can do to stop us. This policy is now the de facto law of the land.

To Brakus72, I fully appreciate the meaning of "classified". However, the National Security Act requires that congress be informed of clandestine operations and other classified programs and operations via the "gang of 8" and the select committees on intelligence. This is the issue at question, not releasing classified materials willy nilly. Authority without responsibility = chaos. As someone that had served my nation proudly and competently for over 20 years in various national security positions there is a reason for the prudent oversight procedures contained within public law that have been followed without issue for years.

Unfortunately, adherence to the principles of the rule of law or respect for the concept of loyalty to the institution by a few folks has compromised so very much more. I can only hope that a sense of responsibility by those that formulate national security policy and adherence to the concept of loyalty to the institution as exemplified by so many loyal members of the military and civil service can be honored, respected and emulated by those that have confused subservience to an individual as loyalty to the institution, their office, the public trust confided upon them and to their oaths.

Ultimately, it will be the institution that carries the burdens of the imprudent actions of a few or our society will officially enter the realm of lawless.

Wattsburg, Pa. ??? Vice President Joe Biden visited a small town on the outskirts of Erie today to talk to rural folks about federal stimulus money that can be used to expand broadband access to the Internet for rural areas that typically have poor connections.
Apparently stimulus money and broadband are not all that interesting to the local folk here: Only around 100 or so people have showed up so far to hear Biden talk at noon at Seneca High School off Route 8 in Wattsburg.

So many people complain that Obama is far too liberal. However, he really acts way too much like Bush for my taste. Let's make a comparison: he spends too much, he thinks the Congress answers to the White House, he encourages secrecy from the Congress and the American people, and he doesn't seem to believe in equal treatment under law.

Great article Mark and Michael! I always enjoy seeing Michael expose stories we really need to know about. I'm glad that Leon Panetta has decided to investigate the CIA and discover for himself just how crooked it was run during Tyrant Bush's reign of terror against transparent government. We should never forget that it was the CIA under War Crimnal Bush who told us that Saddam had WMD and it was a slam dunk. Now we find out about some new nefarious program under the past tyrant that we don't even get to know about. My bet is that it's Sy Hersh's revelation that Marquis de Sade Cheney did have a secret asassination group operating under his orders. Leon Panetta has always been for transparent government and now he's got to pratice what he preaches instead of covering up the nefarious crimes of War Criminals Bush and Cheney!
