Eleanor, your articles are so inaccurate you should write fiction. I am surprised Newsweek still allows you to write political articles. Obama couldn't get reelected if he ran for office today.
The president still has plenty of political capital. He just needs to be willing to spend it.

His poll numbers may be sinking, but six months into his presidency, Barack Obama retains the admiration and the trust of voters
Perhaps Eleanor should read the comments on her article to gauge what many people are starting to think about The One.
Actually what I'm thinking is the right wingers are angry, under educated rubes whose leadership lead the economic policies that cost them their jobs and allowed them to spend all of their time posting to the Newsweek comments board. Me? I'm going back to work. There's a country to save from people like you.
A Democrat who wants to work, now I've seen it all. - must be a government job
The poll numbers are a-changin!
YES, the Repubs were rubes, but they have learned a great lesson which the Dems will never learn.
Wait, this article is a joke, right? Oh, right, its Eleanor Clift and Newsweek. Nevermind.
The president still has plenty of political capital. What planet are you from Ellie? As far as getting in touch with his "inner LBJ" you are talking about the same twit that spent most of his time voting "PRESENT". Obama is a loser and hopefully this clown will be out of office by 2012. Maybe since Clift admires Obama so much, she and Chris Matthews can fight over him.
you need to do some research. Bush told congress, under both parties, to do something about fannie and freddie 11 (ELEVEN !!!!) times between Aug 2000 and Jul 2008, and they did NOTHING! Barney Frank told congress all was well, and instead of looking closer congress merrily skipped to Frank's tune. Even when fannie admitted to a $1.2 BILLION error on 29 Oct 03; and again on 23 May 06, that they had been overstating income and capital by $10.6 BILLION for years, Frank testified it was a "minor accounting error, and not serious."
When democrats took control of Congress 17 Nov 06, the economy was growing at about 3% per annum, unemployment was holding steady at about 4.5%, and inflation was under 2%.
Between 14 Mar 08 (Frontline exposes the extent of JP Morgan's "toxic" assets) and 15 Sep 08 when Leman Brothers tanked, Bush addressed the economic situation a total of ten times - IN SIX MONTHS! Yet congress, The Democrat Socialist party and the media choose to demean and condemn Bush rather than take positive steps that most likely would have saved us all from the troubles we see world wide today.
THEY WANTED POWER, ABOVE ALL, AT ALL COST TO THE ENTIRE ECONOMIC SYSTEM.

You cite as evidence the Fox News "hit job", I mean "special report" on youtube.
I'm sick of this revisionist history. Maybe Bush and Snow warned Congress and cared, but they certainly did not do much about it. Durign the entire time of this speical report, both houses of Congress were controlled by the Republicans. Although it's fine to quote Frank and Schummer, they did not have the power to introduce or pass legistlation, only the Republican chairs of the committees and heads of the chambers had that power. So once again Fox distorts reality by presenting the complicity of the Democatrats rather than the responsibility of the Republicans.
And you repeat that crap as though you are the smart one. You need to do some research. If you know so much, tell me who the chairs of the House and Senate Finance Committees prior to Jan 07, when the Democrats took over. I assume you still remember the House and Senate majority leaders of that time, the other two who are most responsible in Congress. Let's face it, both parties failed us while the Republicans were in charge. Get your news from a repudable source, like The Economist.
Yes, Bush told Congress, both GOP and Democratic, 8 times, he probably could not do more. Some Republicans also warned, but no one Democrat. Even if all Republicans in Congress had decided to do something when they were in control - it would not have passed necessary 60 votes in Senate.
And no surprise that Democrats were mum on the bank issues and keep paying bonuses to bankers - unlike other parts of business, they were also in bed with bankers because of mutual spending agenda.
Eleanor,
You need to get out of washingon and hear what formerly-avid obama supporters and workers like me have to say.
What obama needs to do is to fulfill the promises for which what we rallied to him in the campaign. Instead, he reneges every time one of his campaign issues arises - Guantanamo, banking bailout, gay/lesbian rights, healthcare, taxes, care for the elderly.
Last week's scolding of African nations for their respective corrutpions made me laugh. This from a man who took millions in campaign money fron the banks and then turned around and gave them trillions of dollars and role of the head of the Treasury!
I will not vote for him again, nor for any other incumbent.
Why did you vote for him on the first place?
Americans support our President and his directives to make our nation a better one.
The so-called GOP "unifying" agianst additional stimulus to keep America's economy on track shows exactly how disconnected the GOP has become with the American people...their reluctance to bring about change in Washington shows that they are a party of the past, and not of the present...They had no problem pumping billions into Iraq at the expense of decline here at home.
God Bless America and its future.
Less and less people are supporting this idiot. All neutrals now are convinced that they voted for empty and irresponsible promises. Democrats will keep their hopes for a while, but money talk will soon convince half of them either. Only bums will keep supporting Obama in a year, because they have nothing to loose, as Marx said once.
I support The President. Now is the time to seek the full employment act. Ten percent of the people need jobs. Then 50 million need health care. Do it. We need to move forward on the war. Let them have Afghanistan. Let them have Iran. We need jobs. We need to rebuild America. Our foreign policy is: we help those who want and need our help, to help us. I do believe we are turning the corner on the economy, but we must stay Ala Car ville.http://drjalee53.blogspot.com/
In reaching for an example of failure of leadership, I find it odd that Clift would pick Obama???s perceived deficiency in forcing his Mexican ambassador nominee through the Senate.
In making her point, Clift seems to fall prey to the notion of the ???indispensable man???. There are no indispensable men, or women, in a democracy like ours. The future of Mexico does not hinge on the identity of our ambassador. If the Republican Senator???s block of Obama???s choice cannot be overcome (and in the present environment, I don???t see that as an insurmountable barrier), then pick someone else equally qualified but with fewer pro-Castro credentials.
Of course, then again, getting a top pro-Castroite into the diplomatic corps may be exactly Clift???s, and Obama???s, objective, and Clift???s concern over Mexico a mere feint.
*** Not for much longer it ain't !!! ***
Says you. But you didn't like him before, and as the election results show, you are irrelevant.
The problem is not that Obama does not want to push hasrder for health care and cap and trade. The real problem is that Obama is distracted with those problems that are only tangential to the economic problem. Everybody you poll told you that the economy is the most important problem. No matter how good Obama talked it runs against common sense that when the country is almost bankrupt you try to pass very expensive bills to solve other problems. Democrats shout do like Clinton and hire somebody to show the president a big sign saying "It's the economy, stupid" whenever he tries to talk about anything else, otherwise they are going to suffer big in 2010
<"Obama's standing in the country is high enough that he can still ride the wave of the election that swept him into office. ">
Not for much longer it ain't !!!
For the first time ever, I agree with Eleanor. I look forward to Obama getting in touch with his inner-LBJ and channeling his own LBJ-esque moment . . . "I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president." Even better, maybe he could swing right and resign as Nixon did, so as to spare the nation of his destructive policies and incompetent governance. One can always pray.

LBJ moment? Obama is experiencing more like a Jimmy Carter moment. Ms. Cliff and the other Obama slobbering, leg tingling MSM sycophants are about to go down with the ship. Good riddance.
This is ironic. The Eleanors of the world were the same people who chased LB out of the White House over VN.
"Can't Obama bring the hammer down on recalcitrant Democrats like President Johnson would have done?"
Did Obama bring the hammer down on his buddy Rev. Wright when Wright was spewing racist invective for 20 years? Did Obama bring the hammer down on his domestic terrorist pals Ayers and Dohrn? Did Obama bring the hammer down on FISA? Did Obama bring the hammer down on campaign finance reform? Has Obama brought the hammer down on Wall Street? Has Obama ended the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Eleanor, wake up and smell the coffee, dear.
Boy, this is getting FUN. I think... that I am beginning to notice... a little "desperation" in Clift's rantings. Perhaps, even edging into Panic... Or is this err, umm... " nuance " in propaganda?
AND, heheh, Clift wrote, "and the bills are being written"
What Clift left out is that," NO DEMOCRATS ARE READING THE BILLS BEFORE VOTING ". Obviously Pelosi, Reid, Soros don't want to spoil their fun with work.
Yep, this is getting fun - just wait, Democrats.
9.5% Unemployment and shooting up like a rocket. A stimulous bill that was nothing but a corrupt special interest payback that has damaged, not helped the economy. A Tax & Cap tax increase that will impose trillions in costs and taxes on the U.S. econoomy. A totally corrupt health care reform that will put billions into the pockets of the lawyers whiule it bankrupts the nation and puts the very sick and elderly onto a waitlist to die! As the President of the European Union said....Obama has us on the road to hell!
The attacks from critics about unsustainable debt and big government have taken their toll.
Gee whiz. It's not the "attacks". It's the policies.
It's not the criticism. It's the unsustainable debt itself.
