Sotomayor Is a Shoo-In

If she keeps her cool and her answers learnedly vague, the lifelong New Yorker will make history this week.

shouldn't the president be concerned over the sharia group of hundreds in Chicago...terrorists? instead of all the nonsence with this judge? She has some real problems. And she is an Affirmative Action student, all is free in America!! Who pays for that??

The History we will be making is putting into office a woman that doesn't like White men....this truly will be a first.

Yet another person who has been on government handouts her entire life.

What the hell are you talking about?

  • Posted By: Skidmarks003 @ 07/13/2009 2:24:26 PM

She is a shooin because in this day and age, anyone who speaks out against her harshly will be branded a racist, and people are scared of that these days (white people.)

    • Posted By: Russian55 @ 07/13/2009 8:15:46 PM

      EXACTLY!

The main reason Obama, an unproven, First-term US Senator was able to grab the Nomination and the Election was twofold: First, speaking out too harshly against him was "racist" and secondly, the Press was neatly orgasmic over him.

He got softball questions from the Press. Rather than compare him to McCain, they compared him to Palin (the VP nominee).

He has NOT ONCE called on a Fox reporter at a Press Conference. WHAT IS HE AFRAID OF? A REAL QUESTION?

"He has NOT ONCE called on a Fox reporter at a Press Conference. "

After the "terrorist fist bump" thing, why would he take them seriously enough to bother?

The red states are seeing red when they see Sotomayor as a future Supreme Court Justice. How can they get a fair shake from a non-white judge who does not understand their values? Justice Thomas turned out ok because he was carefullty programmed to be an uncle tom who was appropriately servile and obedient. But a pushy Hispanic who had the nerve to go Ivy League and then question the rules and practices of the ruling class? She is the worst nightmare of the good old boys who yearn for the past when everyone knew their place and theirs was on top. God help us when minorities get into power. They just might treat white folks like the white folks treated them for generation after generation.

What a surprise that this article reflects the democratic bent toward Sotomayor. I thought reporting was giving a panoramic view of things. It seems that any journalist who writes an article with Obamas name only used rainbow colored ink. It also seems that Obama and Sotomayor are deity, with no flaws and only the best interest of Americans......right. I know that this is falling on deaf ears, being that I am a white male. The next great civil rights movement will be from my group.

Mr. Fineman, please. "another planet: states and places in which the dominant culture is, for want of a better term, traditional: Alabama, Utah, Iowa, Arizona, South Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma?" Traditional? The governor of South Carolina is moonstruck adulterer, Alabama was so corrupt as to de-elect its own governor and place him in solitary confinement for nine months on charges pre-arranged by Karl Rove, and my own Texas is "governed" by a weirded-out wannabe-secessionist who, like his predecessor, never saw an execution he didn't like. Many of those other states mentioned have disproportional rates of violent crime and low education stats. That may be mainstream right wing, but it's not a tradition of the sort I'd want to identify with. Sotomayor has shown she has a brain and can use it, as opposed to the one-track rulings of Thomas, Alito, Roberts and Scalia. If those four are qualified to served on the Supreme Court (a claim I do not support by any means), then she is far more so.

No: Not "metropolitan" tastes - "cosmpolitan vision."

Cosmopolitan(definition): (1) The ability to imagine other points-of-views not as an "outsider," but as someone who knows enough about other people to actually have a lens onto the world that is shaped by knowledge and a willingness to listen and learn; (2) an intellectual and cultural agility that facilitate individual comfort in the 21st century world; see Barack Obama,

The old, worn-out divide of city vs "traditional" non-city simply does not capture how most people live anymore, and the media's constant use of this absurd dichotomy amazes me. If the election did not tell us anything else, it told us that those who hold on to the Big City-Small Town myth are a minority. It is the myth and longing that seems to drive Palin supporters.

Geez: Do you not hear Sotomayor's own sense of "tradition" coming through every other word she says about her family and background?? "Tradition" is not the sole province of "small-town" America (as "small towns" lose population everyday). Can we move on to talk about multpie "traditions" and sustaining mythsand longings? Might we PLEASE place the mythical past in the past and not allow it to govern not only political discourse but commentary about politics??

This is what's going on people. We need her in there, she will be our missing link to bring the Bush Administration to justice. Check this out this link:

    Here is a teaser:

Acting Chief Of Staff Indicates Stand Down Order Held Until After Missile Hit Pentagon
On September 13th, 2001, the Acting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers, was asked whether the order to scramble fighter jets had been given ???before or after the Pentagon was struck.??? Myers replied: ???That order, to the best of my knowledge, was after the Pentagon was struck.???

    * Andrews Air Force Base assigned to protect the Capital is 11 miles from Washington DC.
In the 1st nine months of 2001, the base scrambled jets 67 times to relatively minor incidents involving commercial airlines.
    * Fighter jets travel at 1,500 miles per hour and routinely go from ???scramble order??? to 29,000 feet in 2.5 minutes.
    * Air National Guard's 177th Fighter Wing, Atlantic City International Airport in Pomona, 8 minutes from New York consistently maintains two F-16 fighters on the runway and pilots on 24 hour scramble standby. On 9/11 these standby F-16's were specially decommissioned.

AP- WASHINGTON D.C.- In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's
qualifications for the presidency, the group "Americans for Freedom of
Information" has Released copies of President Obama's college transcripts
from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that
Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign
student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript
was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a
suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The
transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was
awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation
Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim
foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun
that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

Along with the evidence that he was first born in Kenya and there is no
record of him ever applying for US citizenship, this is looking pretty
grim. The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release
casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve
as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in
meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refuse
    d comment on the issue.

Britain's Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article
titled, "Obama Eligibility Questioned," leading some to speculate that the
story may overshadow economic issues on Obama's first official visit to the
    U.K.

In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice
Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear
arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President in a
case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey. This lawsuit claims Obama's
dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio's
case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's
citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results
of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates
that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year
with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure
of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation
is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S.
attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the
    matter.

      This is old and UNTRUE.

I dislike Obama's politics, did not vote for him and wish he were not President, but THIS is just a fiction.

Please, bring up REAL facts, not just flights of fantasy!

    Welll .... lessee - your interesting take on the urban sophsticate vs. the country low-brow culture is a thoughtful angle. But almost all the chatter about Judge Sotomayor covers a few key points (one of which you touched on);

    A. QUALIFICATIONS

Judge Sotomayor brings to the bench the most trial experience of any postential candidates as well as far more than her to-be colleagues on the Supreme Court. She earned outstanding law school marks, served as a prosecutor, is a respected legal scholar much in demand for conferences and colloquia, and recently achieved the American Bar Association's highest rating on qualification for the nomination.

So those of you who say that qualifications alone matter, rest easy.

    B. PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

Judge Sotomayor's VERY extensive list of rulings and opinions shows that she is primarily a moderate to conservative jurist. She overwhelmingly ruled not in favor of those persons claiming discrimination, but rather against them. The character of her rulings as a body shows that the judge closely hews to the law and to established precedent. That, by the way, was what she did in the "Ricci" or New Haven firefighters' case.

So those you worried some loose cannon driven by emotion rather than knowledge of and desire to enforce the law might get on the Supreme Court bench, you rest easy, now, too.

    C. RACE AND ETHNICITY

Judge Sotomayor has consistently shown herself not to be a racist, although she is appropriately self-aware. This issue seems more to inolve the politics of the nomination than the nominee, regardless of the loathsome rantings of certain talk show hosts and televsion commentators. Although there is indeed a political dimension to the President's choice of nominees, it does not appear to really carry over to Judge Sotomayor's own behavior as a judge before, nor to anything she's likely to do as a Supreme Court justice. The politics was an appropriate aspect of the President's decision-making process - he is, indeed, the nation's top politician at the moment. That is not an aspect of how Judge Sotomayor has behaved thus far so ease off.

And by the way, who here has ever heard of the Dred Scott Decision? Who here could REALLY defend it even in the terms and context of its own time? The Supreme Court ALWAYS gets involved in everything some smarmy folk here refuse to admit are part of life. To you disaffected Neo-Cons and diehard Reeps, let me just say one thing: The election of 2000 was LOST by George W. Bush.

    • Posted By: Russian55 @ 07/13/2009 8:09:49 PM

"To you disaffected Neo-Cons and diehard Reeps, let me just say one thing: The election of 2000 was LOST by George W. Bush."

Please justify that statement. NUMBEROUS recounts were conducted with the SAME result.

If you want to see something very startling, look at a county-by-county map of the results of the 2008 election and see how little of the country actually is represented by Mr. Obama.

Is it just land N, it is all the resources and importance of that territory.

To all you liberals and pseudo-intellectuals: Many of you don't want to admit that Obama would not even have gotten past the first few primaries if he was white. He had (and has) no real experience. Which is why North Korea and Iran will soon have nuclear weapons and ICBMs, while the (PROVEN) SDI program will be consigned to mothballs, leaving us defenseless.

Our President is a moron who makes Bush (who I didn't like) look like a genius.

    • Posted By: Russian55 @ 07/13/2009 7:48:39 PM

Funny, some of the "greatest" justices on the Court had essentially NO experience before being put there. Earl Warren comes to mind at once.

And if you are concerned about experience, why would you put a ROOKIE in the WHITE HOUSE?

  • Posted By: William500 @ 07/13/2009 4:10:13 PM

She will do just fine. She will change the dynamics of the court because of who she is.

    • Posted By: Russian55 @ 07/13/2009 7:45:53 PM

It is highly doubtful she will change much, as she is replacing another liberal justice.

However, she seems to value her own opinion more than the words of the Constitution. That is not only bad for the course of the Court, but bad for our freedoms and liberties.

  • Posted By: Russian55 @ 07/13/2009 7:44:20 PM

The mere fact that this woman believes that a "Wise Latina" would be better than a "Wise White Male" should disqualify this woman. In point of fact, she will be approved unless she is found over a dead body, holding the bloody knife, because the same Party controls the White House AND Senate.

It was said when we had a split between the parties that controlled Congress and the White House we had "gridlock." I would say we had "brakes." As it is, we are on a runaway course with no one to slow us down and see of the course is the correct one.

If the choice is between going the wrong way and going nowhere, I pick nowhere. At least that way we do not damage ourselves beyond repair.

The Speaker of the House does not move up to VP if the VP becomes President.

  • Posted By: jeff in indy @ 07/13/2009 4:09:57 PM

ok. . . w/60 votes what crack smoking moron thinks she isn't??? stop wasting time and OUR money and get it over with.

  • Posted By: JakeSD @ 07/13/2009 3:50:47 PM

Who cares if she gets in. She does not change the dynamic of the court. As you can see judges dont rule based on the law, they rule based on political ideals. That is why for all the hot button issues it is always 5-4. There is no such thing as justice being blind at this level since you are placed there based on your politics aligning to the sitting president's.

Those white firefighters werent scared. Even with the RADICAL, felonious Black Panthers set FREE. (Obama Justice) they were not afraid. Criminals bank on fear; its the card they hold.

  • Posted By: Skidmarks003 @ 07/13/2009 2:27:01 PM

Howard Fineman is nothing more than a liberal cheerleader for this administration. Read his past articles. If they burned down his house, he would still be cheering for them.

  • Posted By: Ohio for McCain/Palin!!!! @ 07/13/2009 12:28:31 PM

I would have to disagree. This is another example as to why Obama's polll numbers continue to decline and will continue the downward trend. He will be a one-term president.

    • Posted By: spjon @ 07/13/2009 1:28:36 PM

In case you missed it McCain/Palin lost. And McCain won't be running again, ever. Maybe it's time to update the screen name. I'm not trying to make a personal attack, I just think it's a bit silly.
