The US policy of feeding the wolves continues and as expected with no tangible gains. The main aim of US in Afghanistan is to get out Taliban and Jihadists elements and not run the country. Karzai governments main aim is to stay in power with or without Taliban threat . Mr Karzai would have reckoned that he is indispensible as long as Taliban threat is there. No Taliban threat there will be no US support, no US support there will be no Karzai government.

Same thing is happening across border in Pakistan. As long as Taliban threat remains Paki Army get money, arms and support with no questions asked. If they were to neutralize this threat then no support from US. So it makes no economic or even political sense to go whole hearted against Taliban.

It shows powerlessness and hopelessness of US government . Karzai might as well as have spitted on Obama than to provide 600 odd troops. Pakistan army and political establishment which has lot to lose if Taliban were to further increase or escalate the activities don't even provide troops to guard the borders. Even by modest count there Pakistan can easily spare 50000 troops just to guard western border (No one is asking them to fight..just be a scare crow) So much for hammer and anvil policy.

Mr Petreaus would do well to take hammer to foreign office and anvil to Mr President to ask for Return on Investment in keeping
governments on both side of AF-PAK border in power and Pakistani Army in good humor. If Obama does not want to become a talk shop then he should seriously be considering this question himself.

So, don't be horrified that the overwhelming majority of people support this view of obliterating all Muslims in the world and probably all the Chinese and all the Africans and a few other billion people for good measure. There is no difference in the the capacity for human beings to hate eachother. Each race and religion believes in its supremacy and its right of preservation over others. The Iranians were helping us ou right after 9/11t. Why don't we put our pride away and ask for help?

Sir, Your recent post advocating the use of tactical nuclear weaons in Afghanistan shows a compleate lack of knowledge in the use of tactics in guerrilla warfare, and an utter contempt for human life. Have you, sir, any idea just what kind of destructive power nuclear weapons, even tactical ones, have? Do you have any idea just what would happen as a result of even one weapon being detonated? Have you considered where the prevailing winds would take the fallout? Who cleans up the mess if your mad scenario were to be enacted? The loss of prestige both at home and on the world stage could never be regained, and you can bet that it would only be a matter of time before we felt the horror of retribution and revenge at the hands of our enemies. Nuclear war is a zero-sum game. No one wins. This war can be won, but by using the enemies tactics against him. Not by whole scale slaughter and destruction. You should re-think your position, and talk to those who have been in combat and seen the horrors of war up close and personal, and then you will realize that your scenario is nothing more than a fantasy nurtured in the mind af a madman.

Obvious. So don't take the opium from the farmers. Wait until the Taliban pay the farmers, and take delivery of the drugs, and THEN seize it. The Taliban thus loses the money they paid, AND the drugs, AND personnel. The stuff grows in fields of flowers, that are harvested under the open sky, vulnerable to surveillance from the air. Our clever special ops people can probably figure out ways to insert GPS tracking devices into large shipments, and see where they collect...so as to take our shot at them at whatever point in the drug-supply chain we like.

We shouldn't still BE in Afghanistan at all, but if we're going to be, our officials at LEAST ought to avoid the biggest mistakes we made in Viet Nam.

Well, one difference between Afghanistan and Vietnam is that one sponsored those that attacked us and the other was a result of French colonialism and America's belief in the "falling domino" theory of the spread of communism. When attacked, you must fight. The Taliban and their al quida buddies should have been eradicated 8 years ago.

Well, America better get ready for a long haul. Because to reach the level of casualties in Afghanistan that we suffered in Vietnam, we'd have to stay in country for several centuries and beyond.
