I blame radio. I turn it on, and all I hear is, "I'm gonna be a rock star that slides down the pole with no panties or shirt and I'll go out with my friends to start a fight in Disturbia." And that's the women talking.
When was the last time you saw a young couple fall in love on the big screen? High School Musical 3 doesn't count.

do you think that is sad, when was the last time you heard a melodic romantic love song?
you think that is sad, when was the last time there was a truly melodic romantic love song?
What about the Notebook?
What about The Notebook? A lot of people consider that a "great" love story. Movies like The Proposal, Zach and Miri, or even Juno and Knocked Up are not great rommances.
Twlight... should of been a crazy in love story.. but with the awful acting on the part of Kristen Stewart... she looked like she was more annoyed than in love. Ugh! I don't know about you but I have been crazy in love. It's great when you are and it feels like fireworks! None of these stories are about being crazy in love. The heartbreak if it falls apart is devestating... AGAIN KRISTEN STEWART you SUCK at Romance! You don't seem to have the emotional range in your facial expression to convey it! Stop acting please... it's painful to watch....
And what about Zack and Miri? or "Confessions of a Shopaholic"? or the darker "The Last Word"? and those are just a few very recent releases. Lots of 20-somethings are still falling in love and getting into ridiculous circumstances (or, more often, vice-versa) if you just know where to look.
First, your writing is very good and some of the phrases in this truly made me laugh (the She's All That and facebook status mention in particular)- but you must not have watched many movies in the past few years because romantic comedies is all there has been! I cannot even believe that you are suggesting the death of the 20-something love story. Just in passing years alone theres been 13 Going On 30, 27 Dresses, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Cinderella Story, Tristan and Isolde, Elizabeth Town, Across the Universe- hell Zach Braff even managed to find love in Garden State. Maybe you missed the little film called The Notebook but I assure you there hasn't been any disappearance in this type of genre. Quite the contrary in fact, which is why 500 Days of Summer is, in my opinion, a breath of fresh air.
THANK YOU! FINALLY SOMEONE BRAVE ENOUGH TO SAY OUTLOUD 'WHERE DID ALL THE GOOD WRITING GO AND HOW DO THESE PEOPLE KEEP THEIR JOBS???" Personally, as a writer, the writer's strike was a joke because there hasn't been a good piece of writing (with the exquisite exception of JK Rowling) since the 80's...it's time we make a statement. Stop going to half ass movies with poor story lines and start demanding some culture, logic and a good old fashion mushy all consuming love story.
If you're looking for a good hipster love story, check out "Wristcutters: A Love Story" (released in 2006 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477139/). It's a classic boy-meets-true-love-while-chasing-false-love story wrapped in a quirky, unique setting with an excellent cast. Also great were "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and "Garden State". Young people are still falling in love in the movies; it just takes a little more effort to find them! :)
