I pay over $500 per year for broadband internet access. I pay another $300 a year for my phone to access the internet. $800 per year to access the internet. Start adding more fees on top and I will stop using the broadband internet service and the "smart" phone internet access since what I pay now is all I am willing to pay. I think $800 per year is a lot of money, I know it's just lunch money to guys like the author and Barry Diller, maybe they will enjoy the internet more when they are the only people who use it?

The key is in the pricing. So many sites have tried to charge between $10 & $30 which has caused too many people to leave. If the initial cost was $1 to $2 most people would pay without complaint. With a compny like facebook that would double or triple their revenue easily if charged anually and more if charged monthly. If sites do not get too greedy & if their users feel there is a value to them they will gladly pay a nominal amount for the service.

I fully agree with the idea to pay for services you find useful. I don't understand why there is an expectation that everything should be for free on the internet. Well it isn't. If it is "free", you still pay by the ads that spam the websites. Look how that changes the quality of information and services offered on the internet. And we know that the internet ads are controlled by Google (and to a certain extend Microsoft/Yahoo).

Don't we pay to get our shirts cleaned at the cleaners, our car washed at the car wash and our coffee at Starbucks ? Why, simply because it is a good service that we prefer to pay for than do it ourselves. So what is wrong with having to pay to watch a movie uninterrupted, instead of having to face commercials every five minutes (doubling the total duration). Or pay for a communication service on the internet, because it is convenient or useful.

There is no such thing as free internet information. Every piece of information on the internet has a cost and has to be paid for. What seems free is simply paid for in a different way. So get over it and accept that also for the internet the same basic economic principles apply as every other service business: you get what you pay for.
