What If G.I. Joe Were Gay?

The new action movie isn't as bad as you think. It's much, much worse. An idea for how the filmmakers could've shaken up the franchise.

Not quite sure how further perpetuating stereotypes with the ???tights??? and ???dressing well??? comments is actually beneficial to anyone seeking recognition of homosexuals as regular people who are only different in their innate emotional (more importantly than sexual) attraction to others of the same sex. I find it's these kinds of untrue blanket expectations that make life harder for most gays (the list goes on about what else you???re falsely supposed to be if you're gay. This tends to drive many to seek sense of belonging to various gay sub-cultures/ghettos by morphing into stereotypes that often make fools, depressed and worse fakes of them than general society forces them to be. Others completely cannot relate or adapt to such gay ???norms???, finding themselves further alienated from publicly/privately identifying as the homosexuals they are).

Also not sure implying closet gays can turn into super heroes is either realistic or a healthy message to send gay children. Simply put: No powerful gay super hero would be a closet case after a certain age at least. Batman and Robin would be openly gay in their real lives, as it takes a level of courage and self-acceptance to be successful/strong human beings before becoming a super hero of any kind. Closet gays are not likely to develop that to say the least. A super hero would be out to the world as who he is, and not succumbing to pressures to play the role of a "stylish" tights-wearing basket case or muscle queen for example. Like other strong and self-adjusted gay men, he would just be himself.

It is more than high time to stop ignoring the realities of the vast majority of gay people who live under the visible tip of the gay iceberg. They are just no different from heterosexuals in any other way but one. Just like heterosexuals, they cannot be typecast and consist of varieties of mostly average looking guys with same aspirations and general work/friends/family lifestyles as everyone else. (only difference is even personally well-adjusted gays generally have harder time finding others to build long-term relationships with because most gays never heal or rise above socio-cultural pressures/traumas ??? making long-term emotional intimacy close to impossible).

Supporters of homosexuals developing normally into the people they are (and not what social and gay subcultures expects them to become), and of society recognizing gays as worthy of all basic and other guaranteed human rights granted to everyone else, would serve the cause a lot more by avoiding even ???positive??? stereotypes and focusing on reality: Most of us just want to be. To have the chance to grow up and live like heterosexuals get to do, with all the normal issues this entails, despite our sole incidental different trait.

What if GI Joe went into Victoria's Secret and tried on some bras and panties, and realized that he wanted to dress up like a woman. He could put on the prettiest skirt and earrings and dance all night long in his sexy fishnet stockings and 4 inch pumps. Most Cross dressers aren't gay, but have loving wife's that help them with their makeup. GI Joe could model different lingerie and lace corsets. He could paint his fingernails pink, and wear a curly wig, and some low cut blouse.
He could wear red lipstick and pretty panties.

In the old days of "macho straight", "effeminate gay", we had a macho actor whose role was always macho straight, whether war hero or cowboy, name of Rock Hudson. One day he turned up with Aids and the news came out that he was gay in real life. Gradually, from then, life was not so simple in the world of heroes, sissies, and ordinary people. We grow forward. Poor old Rock died in a short year or so and I never saw his movies replay. Don't know if I just missed them or the image was gone. They weren't very good movies anyway. Giant was his best effort, but still a little hokey. Nowadays, we realize that straight or gay has nothing to do with courage, bravery or excellence at work. We grow forward. Life ain't fun if you don't learn something new along the long road to the edge of the earth.

I hear you older, but Rock Hudson was do darned good looking though...Pretty boy..

      • Posted By: olderwiser @ 08/11/2009 7:23:21 PM

Hello Pia. I guess that a lot of hearts were saddened by the news of old Rock's bias. A waste of good looks, no doubt. Good to see you.

Setoodeh, how about a movie plot where GI Joe saves the doctor who discovered the genetic engineering CURE that fixes the perverted DNA coding that causes gays? Sinister Liberal, ACLU, and GLAAD forces capture and torture the doctor, conduct a "People's Court" kangaroo trial, preach their sordid philosophy and immoral righteousness before GI J frees the doctor and sets the world free of this medical scourge? Try dreaming about that plot then next time you go into your wishful thinking zone.

    • Posted By: obtusegoose @ 08/10/2009 12:19:09 PM

Yeah that sounds awesome! Or how about a plot that involves curing homophobic people from spewing ignorant bile because they think that everyone thinks the same way that they do. But then after the injection they realize that everyone around them thinks they're an ignorant bigot that should be pitied for their outdated prejudices. I would pay to go see that movie!

  • Posted By: fugadude @ 08/09/2009 11:59:51 AM

I thought the movie was a boat load of fun. The critics got this one totally wrong. It's a movie for kids. Kids don't need to be barraged with sexual propaganda every second of their existence. I personnally am sick of the gay agenda and as long as it includes this idiotic fantasy that two homosexuals should raise a child I will RAIL against it until they smarten up.

Gays should take the opportunity to maybe improve their own ways. Perhaps get all those things that plague them and are criticized for under control. Like the spread of venereal disease, or the excessive drug use in the gay community. Lots of problems, and lots of ways to improve not only one's standing in life, but one's self-confidence, and respect that don't require us all to accommodate!

    idiotic article!

    • Posted By: obtusegoose @ 08/10/2009 11:34:00 AM

What an idiotic comment. Two loving parents (who happen to be the same gender) that want to love and take care of a child is HARDLY an idiotic fantasy. If only all straight couples had the same commitment to raising children that gay couples do. But we know that isn't true since 50% of marriages end in divorce. How many of those divorces involve children? So spare me your phony outrage about something you know nothing about.

Also your blanket statements about venereal disease and drug use are ignorant and offensive stereotypes. I've been in a monogamous (gay) relationship for 14 years. Sorry to disappoint you, but no diseases and no drug use... just a happily married couple that have to deal with homophobic people like you everyday.

    • Posted By: surban12 @ 08/10/2009 12:54:14 AM

The widespread venereal disease and excessive drug use is an issue that plagues the Caucasian--esp. male caucasian--community as well, arguably more depending on what CDC article you're citing. Is that appropriate grounds to make some generalized statement as to the suitability of white people raising children? Your logic is poorly developed--try again, and better this time.

"Who is going to watch Downey Jr. and Law make out? ...I don't think it would be appealing to women. Straight men don't want to see it." Exactly what planet is this dude from? There isn't a single woman I know, of any age, who wouldn't gladly watch Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law make out, and I know I'd damn well plunk down my $10 to see it. Has this dude ever logged onto the Internet? The phenomenon of slash fanfiction is prevalent in almost any fandom, and is almost entirely female-driven. Get over yourself, dude - most chicks love watching attractive people make out, and it gives us a special thrill if they're both guys.

This is so stupid i cant believe that newsweek paid you for this how do i get on this gig. GI JOE is a team not one person . SO you should of ask what if one person was gay? Well since its an elite team i dont think it matters unless you want to see someone act so openly gay and flamboyent that they wouldnt even be on the team . You dont know if anyone was gay or not they only showed a few people in realtionships so someone could of been gay. Like i said how did you get paid for this it made no sense and you didnt back anything you said up I WANT IN THIS GIG

  • Posted By: rjharen @ 08/09/2009 11:29:43 PM

If GI Joe was gay the movie would not of been the number one film of the weekend. Newsweek and the liberal media just don't get it hetrosexul males do not want to watch gay men on the big screen.

    • Posted By: surban12 @ 08/10/2009 12:56:47 AM

Speak for yourself, and not all heterosexual males please. Some of us are actually secure in our masculinity--moreover, isn't it a little suspect when certain groups of men are so fixated on other males' homosexuality? Hmm.

  • Posted By: nc55552 @ 08/09/2009 11:50:16 AM

I like the idea of a gay GI Joe but I don't think it would sell. America is still homophobic. I am ex-military (Airborne Ranger) and gay. From my own experience I found that special units such as Rangers/Special Forces/Seals/Force Recon etc. have a higher than average percentage of gays. I call it the Gladiator Syndrome.

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 08/10/2009 12:46:42 AM

Well there, you just made my point! Macho guys don't want to know or acknowledge this.

  • Posted By: olcranky @ 08/09/2009 1:09:54 PM

I think Medved would be surprised to find out how many women wouldn't have any problem seeing men kiss onscreen. As with most love/sex scenes, if it is tastefully done, many women would get a kick out of it

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 08/10/2009 12:43:58 AM

God knows, men sure do get their jollies seeing women kiss, on or off screen. Is there a double standard? Not sure!

Whatever happened to Newsweek? It never was the best news mag, but at least it used to be a news mag. When all a publication has to offer is "What If G.I. Joe Were Gay?" then it is time to close up shop. THe other recent editorial pieces are of a similar level of intererest and quality, which is to say none at all. Put the News back in News week or get out of town.

And by the way, Torchwood's Capt Jack Barrowman is how gay superheroes should be made. (they don't make a big deal that he is gay and they don't send a message about it every 5 minutes)

Torchwood is awesome. And the Torchwood: Children of Earth Series keeps you wanting more.

Correction: Capt Jack Harkness...(played by John Barrowman)..

Why are you even writing for Newsweek? Your article is pathetic and full of gay stereotypes. I am now convinced YOU WERE HIRED UNDER SOME SORT OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION program and/or your editors are so desperate to "fill" content, they are using your articles. Sad.
