The Last Hillbilly

While sitting in my mother's hospital room, I picked up an edition of Newsweek. I found an article entitled "The Last Hillbilly". I read the article and felt somewhat bothered. If Malcolm Jones feels that Ralph Stanley is the "last hillbilly", than I personally invite him to venture to Southern Appalachia and have supper with us and listen to OUR music. Mr. Jones, it's an open inventation.

It's wonderful music; nothing sounds or feels more authentically American. It's a shame, though, that sometimes it seems like those who play it are part of the most exclusive club in the world; like everyone else will always be an outsider.
