Assistant managing editor Kathleen Deveny oversees the business, economics and technology coverage of Newsweek, including Enterprise, an expanded business section aimed at high-income readers. She top edits Project Green, a series of environmental features. She created and supervises "The Tip Sheet," a weekly back-of-the-book section for consumers that covers health, personal finance, parenting, gadgets and travel. Deveny also writes a monthly column, "Modern Family" about parenting issues.

Deveny was named assistant managing for the back-of-the-book sections in August 1997. At various times, she has also overseen society, lifestyle, health and arts coverage.

Deveny came to Newsweek from The Wall Street Journal, where she served as editor of the paper's Marketplace page. She started at The Journal as reporter and writer covering consumer-products marketing. She created and wrote a twice-weekly column called "MarketScan," before being named deputy editor of the paper's Marketplace page in July 1994. Prior to joining The Journal, she was a staff editor at BusinessWeek magazine, where she began her journalism career in 1983 in the magazine's Minneapolis bureau. She later worked as a correspondent in Cleveland and Chicago.

Deveny earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
