Christian Caryl

Christian Caryl was named Tokyo Bureau Chief in August 2004. In his role he reports on Japan, North and South Korea and the Russian Far East.  Previously, Caryl had served as Moscow Bureau Chief since August 2000. In that capacity he traveled frequently to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Newsweek's reporting on the war on terror. Earlier Caryl had served as Moscow bureau chief for U.S News & World Report since July 1997.  Before moving to Moscow, Caryl had spent most of the previous 13 years as a freelance writer in Germany, where he contributed to publications including The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News, The New Republic, The Spectator and Der Spiegel. He is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books. He was a 1999 finalist in the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting. In his journalistic career he has reported from 35 countries. A 1984 graduate of Yale College, he speaks Russian and German.
