The Sanjaya Conspiracy
Tone deafness never hurt anyone on "American Idol"—remember Kevin Covais? But Sanjaya Malakar has hijacked this year's show. He's not even one of the lowest vote getters. How did that happen? His lousy voice and ridiculous hairdos have actually become his secret weapon. "I think Sanjaya is embracing the fact that he's the worst and he's going crazy," says Dave Della Terza of Votefortheworst.com, which is campaigning for him. Many of the "fanjayas" (including Howard Stern) are voting for the wayward warbler in hopes of discrediting the talent show—he's the "Idol" haters mascot. Simon Cowell says he'll quit if Sanjaya actually wins. On second thought, vote for Sanjaya!

Deconstructing Harry
The final "Harry Potter" drops July 21, and Scholastic gave fans an early look last week. Even though you can't judge a book by its cover, we're going to try:

  • Look, No Wand: And he's about to battle Lord Voldemort (who's on the back cover).
  • Scarface: Or maybe not. Harry's forehead looks mark-free. Did he change history?
  • Foes Paux: Those fans look awfully ominous. We're not in Hogwarts anymore.
  • Neck on The Line: The locket could contain part of the evil Voldemort's soul.
