I am a newly graduate of master of science and now will be writing another one. And this time, il be using transdisciplinarity and I have come accross this debate as I am surfing the net to find facts and references. Among numerous archives i had, this one ive finish to read until the end word of warren. Let me relate my research method, which is transdisciplinarity, to the debate of sam and rick. I think these two guys have no idea yet, or maybe have known truth about it, that both of them should not arguing because both of them complement each other for the people to know they can choose they way of life, and what they are, the people including myself and the tow debators' ultimate goal is -- wellbeing and happiness.
ONE THING TO CLEAR, are the two meant to debate and finally someone from them to win? or it is just a show for the journalist to have an interesting article? Anyone to blame here???? - Iris.
I hate to apply logic where religion is concerned because clearly the religious have no need or use for logic and don???t respect it at all. Has it occurred to any religious folk that even if there???s a conscious existence outside the body, that STILL does not mean or prove in any way that there is a god. ALL it means is that there is conscious existence after physical death. Since religious folk think we are the only intelligent life on the trillions of planets in the entire universe, which completely defies all manner of common sense, I guess they would never consider how they are going to explain to a 10 million IQ lifeform visiting this planet, that it has to accept Jesus as it???s savior. If religious folk do concede that there may be other intelligent life in the universe, I guess they think Jesus died a trillion deaths on a trillion different planets, and they all have a translated copy of the bible, and every intelligent life form has identical morality to our own.
What about someone who suffers a brain injury and their personality is wiped out and a new one emerges with entirely different morality than the previous one. Which one goes to heaven/hell? What about split personalities?
Religious folk seem unable as well to realize that consciousness is a spectrum, that ranges from barely self-aware instinctual bugs, to human consciousness capable of appreciation for art and physics. Even worse though, they think that human consciousness is the peak of the spectrum. No consciousness could possibly be more advanced than ours. Human consciousness is SEVERELY limited by our senses. The content of our thoughts is directly related to the number and type of senses we have. I for one have no doubt that we are no where near the top of the spectrum. Our consciousness is so weak, we cannot even process simultaneous input from more than one source. Try sitting in a room with no distractions and read a scientific article while also listening to a scientific discussion, and then take a test on what you learned. I???m betting you???ll score horribly because our consciousness can???t handle simultaneous input.
Anyway, I have hundreds of pages of arguments about the insanity of religious belief, but I???m not going to waste my time trying to lead the delusional out of the woods.
I find it incomprehensible how rational people who beneifit from the advances of science every single day can refulte the overwhelming evidence that we, and all life on earth, are the prodict of billionsof years of evolution. The advances of science, particularily in the last century have been simply remarkable...we have conquered countless diseases: we have explored other planets: we have deciphered the human genome; we have developed airplanes, and the cell phone and Internet, and on and on. And... no sensible person would every question the validity of the science that made these achievements a reality. And yet, when 99+% of distinguished evolutionary biologists put forth the scioentific evidence for the evolution of mankind, more than half of the American populaion does not accept it. All I can say to the American religious fanatics is " please pull your head out of the sand"..the rest of the world is laughing at you.
The problem, asolerca, is that these "believers" want the benefits of all the good things science brings, but they also love to criticize it as they benefit from it. Look at some of these postings. A lot of people only picked up internet technology because they see as a way to "spread the word"...or harrass other citizens, depending on your view. When I read some of these posts I wonder how in the hell (pardon the pun) we are going to face the technological and environmental challenges we will face. The answer is, those who go out and get an education in science and engineering are going to have to solve the problems, then they're going to get spit on because they have been spending their time raving about angels and satan and who the heck else knows what.
When I look at Warren's comments I see a lot of the smirking and self-preening that makes his type such a turn off to me. He clearly feels he has all the answers, despite what he might say, and that that those of us who are foolish enough to disagree with him are simply little children who either need to start going his way or are going get their hand slapped cosmically. Chastizing Harris for being close-minded, yet he freely admits that he has a blind interpretation of the bible to the point of rejecting scientific evidence is absurd. I'm so glad to hear that he believes all atheists live in places like North Korea. Plenty of people say that the problem with America these days is its lack of faith. I think most of our major problem stems from the fact that so many of our citizens are so smug and self-congratulating about belonging to the "correct" faith that they cannot even begin to relate to other countries in the world. That's going to be a big problem for us. It already is.
My advice to Newsweek is this: Consider doing this interview again but with a different person to stand up for the bible and it's world view. Rick Warren in my opinion didn't give solid and concrete answers. He leaves the reader in limbo in my opinion. If I were someone in search of God I would chose not to believe because Sam had in my opinion more ammunition to back answers. Rick Warren is a popular evangelist however I disagree with most of his work. Please select a person that will give more solid answeres and evidence. T hat person would be people like: Hank Hanegraff, Lee Strobel or Palini. Not only will they be able to answer these question more effectively but they will also make a believer out of Mr. Sam Harris.
The debate should have gone deeper. there should have been a question about life after death. I'm a christian but I cannot say that those non-Christians/atheists do not have the chance to enter heaven. Altruists are great people. They are the good Samaritans in our modern world.
Today the Gates of Heaven are opened and any man can enter, but once it is closed non will pass through, it will be guarded with angels having eyes everywhere and they carry a great sword.
From where in the Bible you can find a passage that says " the good Samaritan deserves the sword".
We should just concern ourselves the the events after Christ, those who went before Christ GOD also has a plan for them some will be saved and some will be cast out. Those that have rebeled against GOD are in great danger unless they change. Sure its not any mans job to be judge, but for now let follow the testimony of Jesus Christ. It is said that strangers will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven for the children of the kingdom are cast out.
James 1:27
What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religeon is this: To take care of the orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world. James 1:27Enter Your Comment
Yes I agree with the my brother, as you live for the glory of GOD who is his son Jesus Christ. I would like to share a little note with you. Christ really looks like a prince, HE has a small face and a little chin. He looks like Ethiopia. Now I understand why we can't look in the face of Christ. When I was a boy I remember my mother taking care of some of the poor in our district, if they didn't have food her kitchen was alwasy open to them, we're a simple family of seven but GOD has blessed us and guide us. We grew a lot of fruit trees but we never sold one, we gave it to anyone who asked and believe me Romel if a have $10.00 in my pocket and someone on the street ask me for a dollar I gave them five, so I understand the poor, because we were poor but GOD blessed us because we always give.
When Pope John Paul II died I had three visions of him, I was in huis room when he died, he laid calmly on his back, Its almost as if he didn't want to die on his bed, so he asked them to help him to his knees, he knelt down by his bed then fell forward on the bed and died. I saw the new Pope risen off the bed and went out to celebrate, it was simply amazing, I could tell you who would be the next Pope . As a brother in Christ, Always give God thanks for everything especially those that are very essential to your life, your senses, the members of your body, shelter, food, clothing and the air you breathe.
(Gentiles will be saved by doing good)
The gentiles do not have the law; but whenever they do by "INSTINCT" what the law commands, they are their own law, even though they do not have the law. THEIR CONDUCT shows that what the law commands is written in their hearts. Hebrew 8:10-12
"Not any man's job to be judge". Yes you're absolutely right in saying so.
God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else? (James 4:12)
The Greatest testimony of Christ is LOVE. no more no less.
The Greatest testimony of Christ is LOVE. no more no less.
The whole Law is summarized into two. 1st, love God above all, 2nd, love your neighbor as you love yourself.
The name Jesus Christ is not just mere name. It's a duty, a way of life. It's a fulfillment. When the bible says "no one can come to the father except through me" that doesn't mean affiliation, but rather, doing what the meaning of his name connotes, knowingly or unknowingly. Wither altruists recognize God or not their deed gives justice to the meaning of the name of Christ. Sometimes we are just so literal in our dealing with the word of God. for me, I still respect the courage of the good samaritan.
I tell you this romel; many of us will not make it because of false pride, its something we all have to work on, every man has false pride, you might not know it but just wait until you look into the face of CHRIS, you'll feel it when HE looks inside of you. The reason I can tell you this is because HE came to visit me. He commanded my spirit and my spirit left my body, HE held my hands, with my head bowed I replied Thank you JESUS, Thank you JESUS then HE disappeared. He allowed me to see HIS face for a brief moment before he commanded my spirit. If you have ever seen a man and didn't like him because of his looks even so is CHRIST, there is no false pride in HIM.
I respect your experience. That's your personal relationship with Him. But you cannot discredit the experience of the good Samaritan just because Christ came into your life in a manner different from what the good Samaritan had experienced. I think pride has nothing to do with this. It's respecting other people's way of practicing their spirituality.
Yes, its not my intention to discredit anyone. There's only one way to find Christ and that is to Accept Him in your heart. When I was five years my father taught me about Christ, I accepted Him in my heart, since then He has never left me, forty years has gone by.
Hello Micky, I truly appreciate your experience. I also have dreams and visions like prophet Joel. lots of them. I've been seeing Christ many times in my dreams. I'm a polio victim but I can walk 16 hours to the mountain just to preach the word of God. I've converted many unbelievers all in the name of Christ. But the reason why I emphasize the good Samaritan because it's a reality in our christian faith. Christ was not ashamed to recognize them. We should feel the same.
I tell you the truth its not about looks, if you care too much about looks you'll pass Christ in the street and didn't know it was him, HE looks like the poor. If you live on top of thew Empire State building to really meet Christ you have to come down to the basement. I tell you another truth even the poor will look down on Christ if they should see Him today, they look at Him and they say in their heart this man could not be Christ. Therefore if the poor hardly makes it there is no room for the proud. Romel when you prey kneel before GOD and say, I'm a man that knows nothing, teach me lord and I'll know, He's the great teacher.
For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen. (1 John 4:20)
I tell you, whenever you refused to help one of these least important ones, you refused to help me.
(Mat.25:45)
You comment only shows that your not use to serving the poor. You know I've been assigned in the prison ministry for three year. It's a big sacrifice for me but gladly I made it. In their situation even though they are murderers, rapist and robbers still I can see goodness in them. I three years 3 had died, several were on parole probation. But when I transferred ministry many cried not because they'll miss me but because I understand them.
sorry about the quot on the last supper. I made a mishap in referring to the greatest commandment
Christ gave to His disciples.
Yes, I believe you have seen Christ, add He has blessed you with visions. He will always come to those with a pure heart. Continue you priceless job and take it with you to the grave, accept every man and live for the glory of GOD and you'll always survive also read Plasm 92 each day before you leave home.
In fact it's the good Samaritan that Christ gave to His disciples as a concrete example of how to become a good and loving neighbor during their last supper. Try to research about the people of Samaria during the time of Jesus. They were despised as fitly, socially unacceptable persons. Let's profess our faith in Christ. No question about that. But our being christian is just half truth if we do away with our brother samaritans. I tell you, God love them so much.
Jesus Christ represents the "TRUTH" those who believes in HIM listens to the "TRUTH".
Yes, I listen to Jesus When He says the Good Samaritan is the loving neighbor of the wounded man.
Yes some of the last words that JESUS left with his friends are all summed up in "LOVE ONE ANOTHER"
finding an immigrant attorney by chance is not a "miracle". their are thousands of immigrant attorneys in the u.s. I recently had to find one due to a family question, and was suprised to discover his office was less than 500 ft from mine.

finding an immigrant attorney in the same neighborhood by chance is not a "miracle". their are thousands of immigrant attorneys in the u.s. do a google search. I needed one due to family question and found out he was less than 500 ft from my office!
there is no proof of a miracle where by a person gets a missing limb reanimated. also, finding the immigrant attorney on the same block is not a sigh of a miracle. their are thousands of immigrant attorneys in the us. plus helping this immigrant could of been done without having to have an attorney drop on your doorstep. when i was looking for one due to a recent question on marriage to a permanent resident I found out he was less than 500 ft from my office!
I'm happy to know that more than 90% in America believes in God. It's quite contrary to what we've been told to believe. Preachers sometimes act like a media reporter. They're sometimes good at sensationalism. But please don't discount those who do not believe in God. Their good deeds prevail. Who knows, when we all die they'll be the ones who will open the gate of heaven for us and say "welcome to heaven brother" and you'll be surprised.
The good deeds that a man does will not save him, unless he or she accepts the son of GOD. No one goes to the father except by the son.
So you mean to say only Christians can be saved. And those non-Christians who've done great things for the good of everybody count for nothing just because they're not Christians. And their good deeds have no credit before the eyes of God not unless they are converted. I'm sorry but the bible doesn't say that the good Samaritan was converted after he saved the wounded man lying on the street. Let's not be selective in our reading the bible.
a great number of non-christians will rise out of the tribulation believing in GOD's only son after they see the real face of the devil, yes they'll all be saved.
They will be praising GOD in these words.......GREAT AND MARVELOUS ARE THY WORKS LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, JUST AND TRUE ARE THY WAYS THOU KING OF SAINTS, WHO SHALL NOT FEAR THEE OH LORD, FOR THY JUDGEMENTS ARE MADE MANIFEST.
Well, let's wait for the time when we all face before the Lord. As for now, for me, the best way of teaching people to know Christ is to teach them how to be a good fellowman. Let's strike at the very meaning of the word. It's shameful to quot but there are lots of scandalous Christians in our society. If affiliation would be the basis for now then I think the whole meaning of our effort amounts to nothing.
Romel once Christ has entered into your heart the holy spirit teaches you everything and it also guides you.
A man that is born of the spirit is like the wind, you hear the sound the wind makes when its coming but you do not know where its coming from or where its going.
So do with the will of God. It's really like a wind. Nobody can hold it and fashion it the way one desires. When God accepted the good Samaritan I bowed to His will. Or else I would have been like a man trying to catch the wind with my hands.
Remember also, there is no repentance in the grave; the time is now.
A man of good deed has nothing to fear. In revelation God says that all will rise and be judged according to their deeds. If in that time they"ll see the face of the devil there's no doubt they will not be deceived because their true nature to do good will prevail. As what they used to do before they die. What we really need to be aware of is the devil that dress like an angel. We have a lot of people like that here in our time. Even inside the church.
God says in Hebrew that there will come a time that no one will need to preach to his neighbor "Know the Lord". For I will put my laws into their hearts and they will know me (rephrased). I strongly believe that altruism is the fulfillment of this prophesy. I'm a christian and have been preaching the Word of God for more than 5 years. All the Laws of God in the bible boil down to the teaching of love not suicide bombing.
He has also hardened their hearts so that they will not understand because they refuse to believe in GOD's only son.
If the basis for softening the hearths of the people would be affiliation then there would have been no scandals in the church. I hate to reiterate this because I'm not a judgmental kind of person. What saddens me is that when a christian tries to assert that he is holier that those none-Christian people. The sweet name of Jesus becomes sour in this kind of preaching. Jesus is thirsty of our good deeds but you give Him vinegar.
It's nice that people believe that God (who we call Jesus in my faith) exists, but Satan and his demons believe it, too. (See James 2:19) My point is it's not merely in the believing, because anyone can do that. It's in the OBEYING of Jesus' Word.
Yes obeying CHRIST'S word and also eat of HIS flesh and drink of HIS blood.
Nevertheless, there is light and there is darkness, some believe in the light and some believe in darkness,
some believe in GOD and some believe in satan; they are both real. GOD represent the light and satan represent darkness; The darkness is constantly fighting against the light but remember GOD controls both the darkness and the light. Believe in the light so you can be children of the light. The new Jerusalem will be a city made with complete gold even the streets and there is no need for the sun because Jesus Christ will be the light of this city, what a wonderful light. We must try and understand how beautiful heaven is that Jesus Christ was will to overlook shame and chastisement to come and share this mansion with us. PLEASE ACCEPT CHRIST today.
For me I believe both God and evolution, and genetics is a flash of miracle whizzing out from God's powerful scientific scepter. Many people deny the benefits evolutionists and geneticists have been contributing for the betterment of humankind. Conversely, many scientists do not believe in God because for them, life is a matter of reason as stipulated in their scientific theory. I don't discredit other loving denominations as well.
Read this. I did the math it works. I am a believer. http://www.youtube.com/user/333MOG333
the god debate will never end, as it has never begun.
we shall never conceive more than our selves, less we name our own as god.
when we step back we can indeed see that all studies, all ologies, stem from a knowledge that is unified into a center- an infinite array displaying that what we know is more than who we are.
strive for truth and honesty and this 'debate' will prove obsolete. what we believe does not change what we are- we are the same.
Does that 91% believe in the son of GOD, no one will enter the gates of the New Jerusalem
"THE CITY OF LIGHT" unless they accept the son of GOD. Remember knowing Jesus Christ is knowing GOD. No questions you'll understand later; "LOVE ONE ANOTHER".
