George Hackett was named senior editor for Science & Technology in November, 1997, assuming responsibility for all stories in those fields, as well as the monthly feature Focus on Technology, which he has edited since 1995. Hackett added Sports to his portfolio in the summer of 2001 and oversaw the coverage of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
Prior to his current responsibilities, Hackett edited Newsweek's Periscope, Perspectives and My Turn sections. In July, 1994, he added Cyberscope, a regular feature offering news on the world of information technology. In Oct., 1994, he initiated Focus: On Technology, a section with news and views about developments in consumer technology and the Internet. In Feb., 1995, he took on the role of technology editor.
Before becoming Periscope editor, Hackett worked in the magazine's National Affairs section, writing on the 1988 presidential campaign. Previously, he wrote in the back-of-the-book, including Sports, Television and Newsmakers.
Hackett received a M.A. in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley; he has a B.A. in literature from Yale.
