Comment: Before people post unworthy post about how these animals are "massacred" by fishers they need to get their facts straight. Fishermen dont go out "killing" they go out to get something very valuable to our economy, FISH. They were not purposely trying to capture the squid and as stated earlier by intellegent people earlier who actually read the article, by law they had to pull the squid aboard. With this squid we could hopefully learn more about this animal and study it for future scientific benefits. With all science sacrifices have to be made in order to make advances in civilization and in this case it is the squid. It could not have been saved because of it injuries. Hopefully there will be no more unintellegent PETA crap about how the squid was "unmercifully murdered with hate and malice".

Comment: So what if it died. When study of such medicines that save lives today needed to be conducted many trial medicines killed and caused side effects that without study couldn't be discovered and perfected. All you PETA supporters need to view this in perspective for once instead of just blabbing about the "murder" of innocent animals that we "massacre" because we dont understand. Science requires consequences.

Comment: This for paul, long lining is much better than trawling with a mile long net that DOES catch everything in it's path. Then there's the comments about turtles and mammals that would be caught, BS, turltles wouldn't be caught on a line and neither would mammals. Any whales that would be that deep are sperm whales and they eat the giant squid. Most all other mammals like seals and sea lions, wouldn't be out that far as they need land fairly close to rest on. The other dolphins and porpoises again don't usually go that deep but look for schools of baitfish near the surface. Do some research and don't fall for the so-called enviromentalists that use the same ignorant excuses

  • Posted By: olfroggy @ 05/04/2008 12:23:37 AM

Comment: to paul, long lining is is the most selective way to fish. Sea turtles would not be getting caught on a hook and line, and I doubt if and sea mammals would be either. Any whales that would be that deep are mostly plankton eaters with the exception of the sperm whale which eats the giant squid. Long lining is mych better than the mile long nets that some trawlers use, which DO catch everything in it's path.. Before you start complaining, you should do some research. By the way, what do you eat for your meals?

Comment: This story highlights the tradgedy of the oceans. John Bennett fishes with lines 2,000 meters long, and with 10,000 hooks on each line. That's just one line from one fisherman. Think of the indescriminate slaughter of ocean creatures from multiple lines set by multiple fishing boats. He is fishing for toothfish (sea bass), but think of the sharks, turtles, sea mammels, and other ocean life killed and discarded as bycatch. it is truly a crime against nature.

Comment: As this story said, they find the beeks of these animals in the belly of sperm whales all the time. They are not indangered. They just live so deep that we cannot see or study them. They are a sperm whales favorite dish! And i didn't see in this story where they said how old it was. So if you think the poor squid is indangered you better kill all the sperm whales cause they're dining on them...........not us!!!

Comment: This shows us the vision and genius of Jules Vern who envisioned this creature generations before it was ever proven to exist. Of course he also predicted rebreathers, atomic powered submarines, and environmental problems the likes of which we are experiencing now as Global Warming too. Contrast his insight with President Bush's genius and our troubles appear predictively obvious.

Comment: Wow, it amazes me that folks will offer a comment after not reading the full article. The squid was NOT DEAD when brought aboard the vessel. But, it was also not in great shape after being tangled in the net. The law states, anything caught there, must be brought aboard. There seems to be alot of roaring about this man hunting for squid. He is a fisherman, fishing. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but he spends most of his time ON THE WATER!!!!! I am surprised he hasn't seen or caught more of them. Now, the other uproar seens to be because he didn't save it. Has anyone seen a commercial fishing vessel?? They are not equipped to save a creature such as this. For gawd's sake people, leave it alone. This poor guy is trying to make his living and is now being condemned for things he had no control over. He did the best for the squid and headed for shore. Would some of you rather he tossed the poor thing back into the water to slowly die? Or maybe once he got to shore he should have sold it to the highest bidder? He gave it to science. Enough already.

    away from human reach.

Gues what would happen to them if men can reached them easily?

  • Posted By: a_defalc @ 05/03/2008 11:09:35 AM

Comment: Better yet, let the squid loose - all tangled up in the net to die a slow and hideous death. Let it get other creatures entangled in the net too. Is that a more satisfactory ending for the great beast?

  • Posted By: a_defalc @ 05/03/2008 10:54:41 AM

Comment: Honestly, what is the discussion here? Chances are the ship would not have had the capacity to keep the squid alive outside of water. This being the situation, why not examine the squid while we can? It's not as if the ship was targeting colossal squid. Maybe some sqeamish people have more of a problem with the 'scientific' pictures of the calamari feast or the 'death by squid' that the scientists took in their excited state... But we all know that scientists are weird and haven't evolved all that much outside of their field! Nasty, I know, but I wonder about the people who made comments about these 'horrible' people (the so-called squid killers aboard the ship) - Do they still eat fish in general and what kind of cars they drive?

there for our children or our childrens children ...except for what they see in a book .....or a artical like this !
Enough said , you be the judge. And if you find your self every saying theses words "how could we have let this happen". think about this artical......................

Comment: I've been interested in this type of creature for a long time....Seems as though the sailing whalers of ages gone by weren't as daft as landlubbers thought they were. Could T-Rex or his cousins be reserected? Hank from Houston, TX

Comment: Whats really sad about this story and the situation is , People ,scientist and envirmentalist all wonder why the world is in the shape its in and why the animals are slowly vanishing. The artical said that they couldnt put the creature back or it would have died! But it was eating when the caught it, now something could have been done to save this rare creature and instead it became news. Do we as humans just think that everything is news and scientific that we have to either kill something ,or pull things apart and experiment
to find out how it works or why something survived for so many years ? Instead now the poor animals dead and who really knows how many of these creatures are in our surrounding oceans ........
I find this story rather sad and the Captain of the vessel that decided that they had to kill it because it wouldnt survive ( that creature lived all these years , come on ) to be very unintelligent

    • Posted By: Distressed2 @ 04/29/2008 20:43:51

Comment: you really ought to learn to comprehend what you read. No one was fishing for SQUID, Ezra! They were fishing for, guess what, FISH! The squid was not on their agenda. Just as you drive and hit another car. I don't think that was your plan for the day, or was it? Please think before you respond with such tripe.

    • Posted By: Distressed2 @ 04/29/2008 20:41:16

Comment: Apparently you have a reading disorder. They were not hunting squid but fish! Too many tree PETA fruits on the internet. Their mouths run before their brains kick in.

      • Posted By: bern46 @ 05/03/2008 10:19:01

Comment: Well when all the tree peta fruits lovers stop caring and theres no longer certain creations and creatures like on this earth , people like you will be standing there scatching thier heads wondering, "what happened ?" That people cant use the intelligence that god gave them and try to save something , instead they say ," we couldnt throw it back ", You mean to tell me they couldnt some how try (at least try )
to save this creature that has been around so long ? Come on ........Now just think about this one.
If a dinosaur was found somewhere , anywhere, do you honestly think it would be left alone? NO!
The way people are today they would want to kill it to study it , .......THINK PEOPLE

Comment: What is yah point "bern46"? I'am glad there are scientist brave enouph to haul in a 990 pbl. squid to examine. Rather then let it go an reproduce and possibly cause more problems to fisherman. Not only that think about if they did let it go, as the man said his co-workers laughed at him because of his theory's. Now bern46 u tell me if u where laughed at about a theory you had. Then the time comes where you can proove your theory to be truth... are you just going to let it loose... or even try to let it loose ... come on dude this is 2008 the more we know the better

  • Posted By: Aliem @ 04/28/2008 3:57:28 PM

Comment: I think you misunderstood the article. They were'nt hunting the squid to "kill it for being different". They caught it by accident and due to law and policy they couldnt release it. Plus the damage done to it probably would'nt have allowed it to survive to anyway. There's no reason for them to not study it since its already caught and dead and obviously they cannot bring it back to life. They are understandablyexcited because its so rare to even see them much less catch them. I undersand your point though. Its sad for such a magnificent creature to die in such a way, and its horrible when other creatures are hunted down just because they are what they are. I just do not think the comment applies to this particular bit of news.

Comment: "International law requires that anything caught in Antarctic waters must be kept onboard and documented to guard against overfishing. So Bennett really didn't have a choice but to haul in the squid. "We decided to get him onboard in as good a condition as we could," says Bennett. "If we'd released him, he wouldn't have survived."

Did anyone actually read the article?? The quid would have deid anyway. its a good thing to study so we can KNOW more about what is out there. That's how we grow and learn.... or maybe we should just bury it and have a nice funeral service for it with PETA?

Comment: that is indeed one BIG ass squid! if we could farm these bad boys a lot of world hunger would disapear along with over fishing. and to make sure they were raised and harvested fairly peta members could monitor the farming tanks. Im sure they would welcome the chance to free dive with such a hungery; [ oops] i mean magnificent, creature! think of what we could learn[can a peta walk on water or out swim a squid? how many petas will fit in such a squid? can a hungry squid bite a pita in half?] this list goes on and on!

    • Posted By: Burl E. Kodsac @ 05/03/2008 21:55:57

      Comment: Wow!
      That is a big Squid!
I hate to say it, but if we want to learn how to protect this species of squid, one will die. We can't study the naturtal habitat.
Who knows, this species of squid may be Tofu intolerant. Why don't you friends of sheep give it a rest! We have to learn something about it before we can save it.
Get out of the coffee shop and learn what the real world is all about.
      I Dare you!
