Mitt's reluctance to discuss his religion is because he is not running for National Pastor in Chief. No smart aleck reporter ever asked John F. Kennedy if, as a Catholic, he really believed the cracker the Priest put on his tongue transformed into the actual body of Jesus Christ in his mouth. No one should be asking these questions of candidates. These questions only open up a bottomless pit of non-political fodder for people to scratch their heads and cast sontes.

Kellylogg: You are wrong to assume Mormon's are racist because of a archaic rule that was finally overturned. Romney, like every othr member of my church I knew at the time wanted Blacks to have full rights to the Priesthood. Romney, was driving when he heard the news on the radio that Blacks were now entiteld to the Priesthood. He pulled over and wept. His response was typical of the excited outpouring of gratitude at the change

I find it very disturbing that Mitt Romney is so reluctant to discuss his religious beliefs, especially since his Mormon faith has obviously instrumental in what he has become today. But one cannot say that his background and devout Mormon beliefs of hard work, frugality, and discipline will make him an excellent President without delving to some of the more unsettling aspects of this deeply guarded and secluded group of people. There are two things about Mormonism that I find very troublesome, and feel that Mr. Romney must address them and his feelings about them before we could honestly elect him to rule the free world. The first of which is the practice of "baptisms of the dead," in which Mormons would sometimes baptize deceased people from other religions, specifically Jews lost in the Holocaust, so that they may go to Heaven and be with God. Not only is this disrespectful and pious, but also shows complete disregard to the religious freedom of non-Mormons. (Mr. Romney did admit to have performed these ceremonies) The second bullet that Mr. Romney has been able to dodge, at least to my knowledge, is the long and well-documented history of blatant racism practiced and preached by Mormons. Until 1978, well after the civil rights movement, Mormons considered Blacks to be the descendants of Cain and therefore "cursed" with our black skin, wide-flat noses, and inferior intellect. Until 1978, black Mormons were not allowed to hold any positions in the church as well. So if Mitt Romney was born in 1947, that means for at least the first 31 years of his life, he was deeply embedded in a religion which taught him that blacks were ignorant, lesser beings, that were being punished and marked for life because we were to suffer for the sins of our supposed ancestor Cain. Until he can openly and candidly discuss his views of minorities and whether or not he still believes in the ???gospel??? that was imbedded in his mind for more than half of his life, I cannot consider him a sincere person nor a viable candidate. I am surprised and appalled that more media attention has not been given to these issues. Regardless, Mr. Romney will not get my vote. Not unless he is able to convince minorities that pulling the lever with his name on it will not result in a bigot sitting in the oval office. We???ve come too far to take a step back.

It's amazing to me that no one minds that there are hundreds of strong brave men fighting in Irag that wear the underwear of the Church of jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. They leave their families, go serve and all to often are laid to rest upon returning home...all the while wearing the garments. It seems that public response says that its just fine to have men wear these garments to defend your liberties and lives, but not comes to living in the White House it becomes repulsive. Please educate yourselves and realize that this is
a legitimate religion and that the garments are something that are personal and NOT a qualification for ones ability to do the job they need to do. It's Ok for soldiers to fight and die in them, but not for a President to lead the country in them? Give this a thought .

Newsweek states that calling Jesus Christ one's "personal savior" is vernacular not generally used by members of the Mormon Church. This is not a correct statement. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and often hear these words.

It is extremely dissapointing that a magazione of Newsweeks caliber cannot research even the most basic of facts for an article. Please, the name of the church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints". That should put to rest once and for all the question of whether they believe in Christ and are indeed Christians. Secondly, they believe in the BIble as a scriptural companion to the Book of Mormom. The comments that I found the most disturbing were those referring to Romney and the Church as only having good organization and packaging. How did your research team miss all of the humanitarian aid that the Church has given through out the world time and time again? Did it ever occur to your articles' author that Romney doesn't speak of the details of this church because people like you run wild with the information and report is as a cult?? Please, speak the truth as the truth truly is. If you don't understand something, ask a question. But it is unfair to this church and all of it's members to just write what you assume is the truth. One last comment......when was the last time people voted by the kind of underwear a man wore?? That is just one more simple thing that a good question could have put to rest. For a great explaination.......go to SLCPAC's comments. It's too bad that after a little research Newsweek didn't come up with the same facts on their own. Come on Newsweek, we look up to you for more responsible reporting.

So a Muslim woman that wears a burka is in a cult? A Jew that wears a yarmulk is in a cult? A Catholic that wears a Crucifix around their neck is in a cult? I am not sure where you got your research from but I think you are way off base here. These items along with Morman Temple Garments are reminders of our beliefs not a statement of cultism.

I was very skeptical about Newsweek's comments about the "undergarments" and other aspects of Mormonism until I started researching in it. I'm sorry, but I refuse to vote for someone who thinks he has to wear "special underwear" to be loved by God. I used to think that Mormonism was a legitimate religion until I started learning about their secret rituals and "special underwear." That, to me, smacks of a cult. And any person who subscribes to this kind of nonsense doesn't have any business being the leader of a country!
