Daniel Klaidman

Managing Editor

Daniel Klaidman was named Managing Editor in October 2006, after serving four months as an assistant managing editor.  He is involved in the day-to-day editorial coverage of the magazine and oversees and assigns stories to NEWSWEEK reporters worldwide.

Previously, Klaidman served as Washington Bureau Chief since October  2000, where he managed the running of the bureau and its staff.  He has also directed the Washington coverage of the war in Iraq and co-authored several stories on Al Qaeda's resurgence within the U.S.

At the helm of the bureau in the aftermath of September 11, Klaidman led a team of reporters covering all aspects of the war on terror.  They were honored with the Overseas Press Club's most prestigious award, the 2002 Ed Cunningham Memorial Award for best magazine reporting from abroad, for NEWSWEEK's coverage. NEWSWEEK's reporting at that crucial time also earned it the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2002, the highest award in magazine journalism.

Klaidman served as Jerusalem Bureau Chief from June 1999 to October 2000, covering ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the peace process. He reported events from the front lines, gathered insight from a wide group of Palestinians and Israelis, and interviewed the top diplomatic players in the region including former Israeli Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu. In 2002, he co-authored a cover story on the future of Israel.

Previously, Klaidman had served as a Washington Correspondent since February 1996, when he joined NEWSWEEK. He covered the Justice Department, consistently scooping the competition, and was a key source of reporting and guidance in the magazine's ground-breaking coverage of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He also covered the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit against former President Bill Clinton, the campaign fund-raising scandal during the Clinton-Gore administration, China's efforts to influence U.S. politics, and embattled FBI Director Louis Freeh against charges of sloppy work inside the organization's famed crime lab.

For eight years before coming to NEWSWEEK, Klaidman was a senior reporter for Legal Times, where he broke the story of the Clintons' legal defense fund, and obtained the secret Justice Department report on Ruby Ridge that revealed much about the FBI cover-up.

A native of  New York City, Klaidman received his B.A. in History from Georgetown University in 1986. He lives with his wife and daughter in Washington, D.C.
