Wake up Bleeding Hearts ! The horse is an introduced species with no effective natural predators. If " Left to nature" to take care of the result will be a trampled denuded habitat and thousands of horses starving to death in the dead of winter. The range is full, the holding corrals are full, the " Wild Horse Sanctuaries" are full.
The Feds are responsible for the habitat and horses and a balance must be reached. Either left to nature or in the care of humans some of the horses will die.

After we kill all the mustangs, Iam sure we can find something else to wipe out. What about the administrators who LOVE to KILL things

With gas prices the way they are, why not train these horses to drive street cars like they once did? We would have to slow down the fast pace a lot of us live, but is that really a bad thing? win-whinny!

I agree with what several people have said here... on a regular basis of sayyyyy... 5 years or so... round up as many of the mustangs as can be rounded up, and geld the older stallions... I'd say don't geld every single one of them or these herds of beautiful animals WILL eventually die out... what really amazes me, however, is how much screaming American politicians do when talking about the wild animals in other countries... screaming about how those animals should be protected against poachers and hunters at any cost lest they become extinct... yet, they'll be the same people supporting the slaughtering of some of our most beautiful wild animals in a most INHUMANE manner... wild animals that pose no more threat than simply eating vegetation that should be RESERVED FOR COWS (ha!)... so, how about combining gelding efforts with rebuilding the habitat these horses are "guilty" of obliterating? If 4 million cows can be kept fed, why can't these horses? Why can't there be a government program to replant what the mustangs eat... perhaps in a centralized area further away from cattle ranches so the horses don't need to roam as much and *gasp* get the cattle ranchers' dander up? Geld and replant, people... geld and replant... not "kill kill kill"!

This is another ATROCITY of our Republican government. As Speakout said below, let's get rid of anything that takes up space and no one needs. Never mind if it's a part of the culture of this Country. Pretty soon there will be NOTHING left of this country that is beautiful. Hey, let's drill in Alaska, I hear there's oil there!

This is more of Bush's inept departmental head insanity. Anyone proposing this should be sterilized themself and then fired in disgrace. What the heck is wrong with us as a society that we would ever even think of such an atrocity

  • Posted By: ginninkid @ 07/02/2008 3:34:43 PM

I agree that sterilizing some of the older stallions and mares is a great idea and letting vet students do the procedures is smart and cost efficient. I do not believe that killing is the answer. Instead of using all the money to hire wranglers, why not invest a little in some seed and fertilizer if you are worried about the overgrazing. Better yet, quit trying to populate their natural habitat with urban areas.

INDIANS & WILD HORSES FOR THE US GOVERNMENT, JEWS AND LILIPUTIANS FOR HITLER, WHAT'S THE DIFF? TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION LET'S GET RID OF ANYTHING THAT TAKES UP SPACE AND NO ONE NEEDS. AFTERALL, THE SAME MORALS THAT CREATED THE 1971 HORSE AND BURRO PROTECTION ACT NO LONGER EXIST. BEEF IS KING, AS THE RED WOLF AND OTHER ANIMALS IN YELLOWSTONE RECENTLY DISCOVERED AS THEY WERE BEING SHOT IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK AT THE STATE'S ORDER LOBBIED BY THE BEEF PEOPLE. ITS A GOOD THING THE KOREANS KNOW BETTER THAN TO IMPORT OUR BEEF. 100,000 KOREANS TURNED OUT TO PROTEST THEIR GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO IMPORT OUR BEEF. GOOD THING SOMEONE STILL REMEMBERS TO HAVE A SAY IN THEIR GOVERNMENT, EVEN IF IT ISN'T THE LAND OF THE FREE (EXCEPT IF YOU ARE SPANISH AND GET FREE HEALTH CARE) AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE (NOT BRAVE ENOUGH TO STAND UP TO THE BEEF INDUSTRY, OR CARE ABOUT AMERICA'S IMAGE IN THE WORLD OR HAVE A SENSE OF SELF PRESERVATION AND KEEP OUR WILD HORSES. WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD ARE THERE WILD HORSES? WHAT ACTUAL HERITAGE DO WE ACTUALLY HAVE BESIDES BASEBALL AND HOT DOGS? OH YEAH, THE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATES OUR FREEDOM TO THE RINGING OF BULLETS SHOOTING EACH HORSE IN THE HEAD, i DOUBT THE VET WILL SHOW UP TO HUMANELY EUTHANIZE EACH WILD, FLIGHTY, BEAST WITH A SYRINGE. HE MIGHT GET KICKED OR BIT BY A WILD ANIMAL. A MORE EUTOPIAN SOCIETY WOULD JUST FIX THE STALLIONS, NOTCH THEIR EAR AND SET THEM FREE AGAIN. MUCH MORE HUMANE THAN WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PROPOSES. WHY CAN'T THEY TRY A MORE HUMANE APPROACH FIRST? AMAZING I PUT THESE PEOPLE IN OFFICE WITH MY VOTE - DID YOU?

  • Posted By: grayghost668 @ 07/02/2008 3:24:03 PM

THE MUSTANG IS A PEICE OF THE OLD WEST AN AMERICAN HERITAGE THAT SHOULD BE PROTECTED
IF WE ALLOW THEM TO BE DESTROYED A PART OF THIS COUNTRY WILL DIE WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: toknowit @ 07/02/2008 3:09:32 PM

Lets do something that is really humane.. Leave the horses alone. Let them run free. Let nature take care of itself. Let the horses be part of the balance of life. That is good karma.

  • Posted By: pdueck@excite.com @ 07/02/2008 3:07:17 PM

I agree with beachme2003. When dealing with feral cat communities people trap/neuter/release. It sure makes sense here! Geeze, where are the enviornmentalists in this battle?

When did everything come to be the "bottom line". All the gov't cares about (both parties) is money, all the schools think about is money, all corporations think about is money. The funny thing is, it has been proven over and over that money is NOT the answer to all the world's problems.

Whoever is making the decision to sell these horses so they can go be slaughtered should be sent on a little field trip to one of these places!

  • Posted By: toknowit @ 07/02/2008 3:04:08 PM

Nature has a way of taking care of itself. Leave the horses run loose... Let things be and let nature balance itself. It is good karma.

Midwest Fisherman I wonder why you would you write something like that without truly thinking it out and its ramifications...as a fisherman I would hope you recognize that the balance in nature only occurs if you eat what you kill...so do you intend to eat all of those horses you believe should be shot? And also, Please notice that by your logic you are stating if anything causes problems it is more humane to shoot it than spend money on programs to save it and thus that would mean shooting a whole lot of humans, because a majority of government money is spent on programs (that do actually fail mind you) to help humans - such as jails, rehabilitation, school programs, welfare, healthcare, trials for drugs/therapies for illnesses(be it physical or mental) and the list goes on. Let us all give it a chance first before we condem it.

Whoa now, stop thinking about killing th wild horses, or do you think we should go ahead and kill the remaining indians as well? Don't think so stupid, the wild horses, that have been living here in the United States, have more of a right to life than many of those who suggest killing the horses. Don't even think about it, we' ve already destroyed thousands of acres and most of everything else by overbuilding, thus driving the wildlife away from its natural envirnment. Its not wild horses in question, its actually our heritage!

  • Posted By: beachme2003 @ 07/02/2008 2:50:11 PM

Here's an idea for MidwestFisherman, let's just shoot the people that need to be culled as well! I have a few ideas as to where to start! Seriously, if the population is too hard to manage, they simply need to geld the stallions. Those herds are rounded up every year to cull out horser for adoption. Geld the stallions at the same time and you will instantly reduce herd expansion. Simple, not all that expensive and certainly a good long term solution. The herds need to be maintained because they are part of our American heritage and part of a culture that existed long before "modern idots" took over America!

I think the American gov't better start shacking in its boots! I'm beginning to hear the drumbeat of an angry "silent" majority. It started off slow but its getting louder and louder. The silent majority of patriotic Americans are tired of being pushed around, and every issue that comes up like this angers us more and more. Leave one of the last remaining symbols of a better time, a wilder time, and a freer time alone!

  • Posted By: MidwestFisherman @ 07/02/2008 2:35:18 PM

i think we should just shoot the horses that need culled. It is the cheapest and most humane way to go about it. The last thing we need is another multi-million or multi-billion dollar government program that will fail.

Haven't we learned anything yet.? We ruin our environment, we overbuild, we drive wildlife out of its habitat, we destroy the land and its native species, and when it's almost too late we enact laws to protect endangered species. Let me tell you..the killers and the slaughter houses don't care and the treatment of the horse all the way up to its death is not humane. The thoughts of this makes me sick.
