Comment: With less than two months before the election, Republicans and Democrats are driving it home: This is the election of the century.

And they're right: There is a lot at stake this year. This could be the year we change the lives of million Americans by providing them with decent health care and millions more with a living wage. It could be the year that we listen to the many Americans and Iraqis and withdraw occupying forces. It could be the year that we cut the near-trillion dollar defense budget, repeal NAFTA, revoke the Patriot Act and the illegal wiretapping FISA bill, build a green energy infrastructure, discipline runaway corporations and reign in the manic speculation driving the current food and housing crises.

That is Ralph Nader's plan, anyway-to offer Americans what the polls show they want.

So, while John McCain sings about bombing Iran and Barack Obama uses rhetoric about "smart" and "dumb" wars to stay in dumb wars and start new "smart" ones, Nader stands for strongly negotiated peace in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. While Obama dismisses his earlier commitments to fair trade as "overheated," Nader would replace NAFTA with uniform environmental and labor standards. And while McCain chants "drill, baby, drill," and Obama prepares to replace Big Oil with Big Corn or Big Nukes, Nader calls for a renewable infrastructure.

But the Democrats tell us that we cannot vote for Nader because there is too much at stake this year. After eight years of George W. Bush, the argument goes, we cannot afford another Republican. We must rally behind the change party. And for the most part, students are buying it. Emphatically anybody-but-Bush and unfamiliar with the Democrats' duplicity, these students mistakenly believe that ousting the current administration will exorcise the demons of war, jingoism and economic imperialism they represent.

Comment: This is total BS. How can Obama be the King of Consensus? This same magazine calls him the King of Consensus on one hand but then reports. He has voted 97% of the time with the Democratic Party. Only 13 of his bills has bipartisan support and he has voted 190+ times present since he has been a Senator. Someone who votes 190+ times present cannot product consensus when they cannot decide there own self.

    Comment: for trazer,

To think that Obama has alienated 50% of Americans (wemon) by not selecting Hillary Clinton as his running mate is ignorance. To select Sara Palin, a governer for two years, and a mayor whith a shotty past, who has no knowledge of world affairs. This should be what alienates american wemon. To jump on Obama for his speeches in san francisco is something that should not be done. San Francisco is the most liberal and accepting city in the united states, and he was able to appeal to them (us actually, as I live in san francisco) and give his views without fear. Commendable. McCain has changed his opinions over many topics, choosing what he felt would fit at the time. Barack Obama has stuck to his views, at least showing that he is adimant about his beliefs. I honestly can say that I believe, and you don't have to agree, that McCain chose Palin in hope of gaining the Hillary votes, but any true Hillary supporters would have jumped off that boat as soon as they saw how uneducated in politics she is.

Barack Obama does not have the experience that John McCain has, true. But to tell you the truth... I would rather have an unexperienced president who has similar views to me, than a man who is the same mold as the last president (buck fush) that has put our country in the situation we are in at this time.

Agree or not, I don't mind. Have a good Day!! =D

Comment: He has alienated 50 per cent of America so if you talk consensus it generally means you listen to both sides. Obama has not. He is a political orphan who has failed to embrace change and tell us how he will work with everyone. He has alienated all women by his not accepting Hillary as his VP. He is so small minded when it comes to small town America given his remarks he made in San Francisco behind our bakcs.

"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #1: THE "WE DON'T KNOW HIM" LIES
After 19-months on the campaign trail, detractors of Senator Obama (mainly GOP constituents), claim they "still don't know Obama" well enough to make an informed decision as to how they should vote. But within 48-hours of Sarah Palin's introduction to the GOP, Obama's critics suddenly knew everything there was to know about Sarah Palin. How is it that the religious-right cannot know (a fellow Christian brother) Obama after he endured 18-months of brutal media scrutiny, but suddenly 'know' Palin within 2-days of popping up on the national stage and without one public interview?

    .
    [2.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #2: THE "EXPERIENCE" LIES
After Senator Obama spent 19-months running a campaign that has totaled $350-million; and after 3 ½ years in the Senate negotiating legislations for the nation and for his 12.8-million Illinois constituents; and after 8-years in Illinois State Senate fighting for the middle-class; and after 3 ½ more years fighting as a community activist and organizer; it is genuinely hypocritical for McCain to pound Obama on the experience factor, and then turn around and install Sarah Palin with NO national and foreign experience, to be a single heartbeat from Commander-in-Chief of the United States. This is a GARGANTUAN HYPOCRISY and a RECKLESS decision that puts the nation at risk just so McCain can win the presidency.

    .
    [3.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #3: THE "CHANGE" LIES
Up until last week, McCain's campaign has been on "EXPERIENCE", while Obama's mantra has always been on CHANGE. After watching the DNC performance, McCain 'blinked' and changed his campaign to run on the same mantra as Obama's which is CHANGE. This is after McCain accused Obama of saying anything to win!!

    .
    [4.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #4: THE "APPEASEMENT" LIES
Bush and McCain accused Obama of wanting to "appease" Iran so they would stop their nuclear program. Obama blasted back and said McCain and Bush hold hawkish views and poor judgment, and their refusal to open diplomatic channels with Iran amounts to failed international policies. Ironically, Bush followed Obama's strategy and began backdoor talks with Iran. As it has turned out, neither Bush nor McCain are calling their own talks with Iran "appeasement", or given Obama credit for what Americans wanted the Bush-McCain leadership to try prior to military exercises. And by the way, Bush and McCain supported 'appeasements' to North Korea in exchange for shutting down their nukes. Again, how ironic, appeasement was the very thing Bush / McCain hypocrites accused Obama.

"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #5: THE "TAX CUT" LIES
McCain accused Obama of trying to raise taxes. But Obama has continually advocated tax cuts for the middle-class with annual salaries of less than $250,000.00, which is about 98% of the population. However, McCain doesn't tell the public his health insurance plan is going to effectively raise taxes for all Americans that have health insurance, while making permanent tax cuts for the riches upper 2% of Americans.

    .
    [6.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #6: THE "BRIDGE TO NOWHERE" LIES
Sarah Palin claimed on several occasions that she turned down $350-million of federal government earmarks for the "bridge to nowhere". But what actually happened is Sarah campaigned to get the money for the "bridge to nowhere", then flip-flopped after McCain voted the bridge down when she won the Governor's office. Ironically, Alaska still got the 'bridge to nowhere' funds but it was used instead to build a "highway to nowhere".

    .
    [7.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #7: THE "PLANE SALE ON EBAY" LIES
Sarah Palin insinuated she sold state plane on EBay for a profit, and more recently McCain repeated it as a fact that the plane was actually sold on EBay for a profit. That lie has now been debunked, and the good Christian Sarah Palin has no shame that she was caught in another lie. The plane could not sell on EBay so it was taken down and sold "privately for a lost".

    .
    [8.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #8: THE "ABSTINENCE-ONLY" LIES
Sarah Palin as an Ultra Extreme Religious-Right advocate uses her State office bully-pulpit to knock down public school sex-education, while plugging her "abstinence-only" religious views to public schools. Ironically, her 17-year old daughter Bristol fails to practice the "abstinence before marriage" views her mother is trying to push in Alaska schools. Then Sarah tries to hide it with another lie by telling the school where Bristol attends that her daughter must drop out because she has Mono. Sarah continued to hold fast to the Mono lie until rumors break loose just after her VP announcement. It was only then the "abstinence-only" hypocrite came clean.

"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #9: THE "TROOPER-GATE" LIES
Sarah Palin claimed she never called the State Trooper Magistrate to have her ex-brother-in-law fired. Soon after investigators got on the seen, emails were retrieved to dispute that fact, and now all seven of Sarah's state appointees have refused to testify. It has been learned that more than 20+ plus calls were made to the State Trooper Magistrate regarding the firing of Sarah's brother-in-law, and because the seven witnesses have 'lawyered-up', the investigators must use subpoenas to get the seven that initially volunteered to testify to give an account of what happened.

    .
    [10.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #10: THE "POLITICS BEFORE COUNTRY" LIES
McCain and Rove accused Obama of picking Virginia Governor Tim Kane as VP for political expediency, and also because Tim Kane would bring a southern state into the Democratic "Win Column". Instead Obama went for Senator Joe Biden to sure up the leadership ticket for the White House. McCain assuming it would be an Obama-Kane ticket, wrongly accused Obama of putting politics ahead of country. Well McCain and Rove got busted. The whole world (except blinded Religious-Right) witnessed McCain picking the least qualified Republican to be his VP in hopes of: (1.) stealing Hillary's voters from Obama; (2.) pleasing James Dobson's religious-right. Clearly a hypocritical VP pick by McCain for the "sole purpose of political ambitions", is now on record for the world???s eternal observation.

    .
    [11.]
    "McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #11: THE "SADDLEBACK CONE-OF-SILENCE" CHEATER-LIES
It was McCain's responsibility to be in Pastor Rick Warren's "Cone of Silence" before Senator Obama got the first question. McCain was not in the cone-of-silence. Therefore McCain cheated. The issue is not whether McCain heard any of the questions posed to Obama, the issue is that cheating did occur when McCain did not follow the rules to be where he was suppose to be, at the time he was suppose to be there.

    .
    [12.]
"McCAIN / PALIN / GOP" HYPOCRISY #12: THE "IRAQ TIMETABLE" LIES
Senator Obama was consistent in his call for a responsible U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq under an agreed timetable. McCain and Bush said "absolutely" no timetables and anything like timetables was tantamount to "cut-and-run". It was Bush and McCain's desire to stay in Iraq indefinitely. Only after Obama took McCain's challenge and went to Iraq & Afghanistan, and secured an informal agreement to pull U.S. troops out by 2010, did Bush and McCain changed there views to accept timetables. Now Bush and McCain don't call timetables cut-and-run any longer.

Obama is not a very good speaker given that Bill O'Reilly made him look so squeemish on his show. He has no idea to do about Iran and refused to answer the question on Bill OReilly. He can talk - but he can't make any important decisions on key issues given his record of voting Present versus Voting Yes No

Comment: I have watched the Pres.Nom. for the pass six month's and alot has been worth it,
yet I want to know why McCain is using so much money to bash OBAMA, the way he is.
it is a waste of tax payer's money, and alot of what he said's is lie's
also McCain is hiding behind a woman's skirt, and playing diry.
He baashed OBAMA, saying He is an unknown, yet he pick's an unknown, to
    be vp.
alot of praise has gone up for McCain, but some have forgotten that he said, if
he get's into office he will get back at Cuba, for what happened to him in P O W camp
when he was there, that was back about 3 month's ago.
what he want's is another war, remeber Cuba is close to the U.S.A. and we could
be in a very bad war,and for what because he want's to get back at them, for
something that happened year's ago. He should be Greatful he is alive when so many have
been killed and never made it home, even in this war.
wake up McCain and let us live, come out of the past.
or get a rocker and sit in it. not in the White House either

Comment: Why does McCain, use tax payer's money to bash Sen.OBAMA, with lie's and such.
why does he not play the game fair, and square.
the only real reason he picked Palin, was to hold on to her skirt, and hide behind her
and use her, to try and get more vote's.
That is unfair way to gain vote's and lose respect for one's self.
McCain need's the rocking chair, not an office in the White House, have you forgotten he said if he get's
into office he will get back at Cuba, for the time he was in P O W,? he want's war and will stop at nothing
until he get's war.I want to see little children grow up, meaning my own grand and great grand children also.

Comment: I just watched the repig party invoke the image of 9/11 yet AGAIN in an election cycle. Showing images of the towers, the flames, the flowers people left on the ground, the fire fighters and police (who were killed because of Giuliani's fatal mistakes). They speak of the heroes and of the TERROR and FEAR we should NEVER FORGET, even though they forgot only months after it happened when they left Afghanistan and Bin Laden, and went to Iraq...McCain being one of the first to call for it, what judgment.

There were 2740 Americans killed on Sept 11th 2001, it was a day I will never forget, none of us will. My heart was broken in a deeper way than I have ever known and for the first time since I lost my parents, I was glad they were not here to see this, or what has happened to this country since. My father was a WWII vet, 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars, and 1 Silver Star, not to mention a wealth of other medals, he was TRULY an American hero. He did not seek office, he did not ask for adoration, he came home (after being shot by a sniper just six months before the end of the war) and raised his children as did many other Americans who fought in that war. I am glad that he is not here to see what has become of our country, the country he took a bullet for, his friends died for, in a war NOT fought for OIL, but for the lives of millions of others...and oh yeah he won his war.

My question is if you are going to speak of heroes and who have died for their country, why the BAN from the White House on showing the coffins of fallen American children who have given their lives for the OIL and EGO(s) of Bush and McCain? They have both tried to use this war to further themselves, just a second ago Senator Lindsay Gramm declared "VICTORY" in Iraq,...great so all of our kids should be home in no more than a few months, right?
Why use the image of 9/11, an image they repigs forgot only weeks after it happened (unless there was an election), and use it any time they feel they NEED it to invoke fear, heart ache, or remind us of TERROR, as if we had forgotten, why use that image and BAN the other image, the image of 5180 Americans who have died following the orders of BUSH and the dreams of MCCAIN, for OIL and EGO. Why not show the flags draped over the boxes their shipped in, show the funerals and the flags being handed to the heart broken families, families who ask "why?" and have NEVER gotten a straight answer.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see the bodies either, but don't politicize one (9/11) and try to hide the other (5180 of our sons and daughters coming home in flag draped boxes).

Comment: Hillary Clinton needs to begin to prepare her exit from the race... Several sources in her own camp admit that she has virtually no chance of winning the nomination except if she succeeds in finding James Hoffa's body and moving it in Obama's flower garden to put the blame on him.

Since there is little chance for the body to be found, she makes all these negative assertions. The goal seems to be the 2012 election. By putting enough doubts on Obama, Hillary is hoping that he will lose to McCain and that she or Chelsea (who is also an experienced leader after her journey at the White House mansion) will be able to run in 2012. The Clintons might then be able to capitalize again with the rental of the Lincoln Bedroom to big lobbyists.

Whatever happens, since the Judas story with Richardson, we know that Hillary believes in ressurection; she or her husband Bill would be Jesus if I understood correctly the story. So, we can assume that Hillary will not hesitate to play the kamikaze with this election or the next one since she will probably reborn again, as the savior.

Hillary Clinton needs to begin to prepare her exit from the race before she hurts herself or others.

Comment: Obama is on vacation because he believes his nomination was wrapped up with his refusal to allow Michigan and Florida votes to be counted. Obama held stead-fast with the ridiculous claim that the votes be distributed equally between him and Hillary Clinton. Obama's judgment leaves much to be desired. Obama was quick to infer that Hillary Clinton's campaign was responsible for the pass-port fiasco, although USA Today reported that The Washington Times and CNN say one of the contract employees worked for a company called The Analysis Corp. That firm, in turn, is led by CEO John Brennan -- an adviser and contributor to Obama's campaign. Obama is carving a hole into democracy and the Democratic Party with his campaign to win at all costs. It begs the question if the Democratic Party can afford to lose the Presidential election and the respect of the American people due to Obama's poor judgment and behaviors.

You are NOT the only one in OUR NATION that knows about the Bill of Rights, or what the first 10 articles of the Constitution says, futhermore I do know what it is to a Patriot. My family for many years served our country and fought for OUR freedom as I would have done if I was able. So you run your mouth to someone you don't know criticizing a person about the knowledge or the "lack there of" so you assume about a topic that is publicized nation wide and you think I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. You want to throw the Bill of Rights and the Constitution up and call me a "RED-NECK". You haven't even got a clue about me, and I think you have turned a public posting on Newsweek into a Personal argument. If you don't like what people say on here argue the point of Politics, dont attack someones character because YOU think you are the only one who knows anything about what is going on with the Presidential Election. Being a "PATRIOT" is loving your country and supporting its authority and intrests. I, my friend, am a PATRIOT until the day I die! I also have the right to speak freely! As I will continue to do! Your name calling only shows the IGNORANT way people like you attack ones character when you dont like what one says. Let's stick to the real reason why myself and everyone else posts their comments on here. If Mr Obama was sitting at the dinner table and the meal in the White House was Prime Rib (beef) and it was against his religion to eat beef as it is a Sacred animal in the bible, and people made rude comments about him, I would be the first to defend him for doing what he believes is the right choice for his religion, but not even putting his hand over his heart in OUR country "Honoring and supporting it's intrests" then how can he really think people will believe that he has our best intrest and the ability to do the right thing for our nation. Weren't you just asking me what it is to a Patriot? I believe I made my point very clear! Obama does not appear to be a "PATRIOT" as he did not Honor and Support our Nations Intrests when it came to standing a singing OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM! Case CLOSED! Maybe you should look a little further into the meaning of being a "PATRIOT" because I think your defination is a little cloudy! Just for the record...Arrogant I'm NOT, but HONEST I WILL ALWAYS BE! FROM THE RED-NECK IN WYOMING!!!!!!!!

Comment: peewee4235! Before you go talkin what you don't know. Get the facts! Some of you are just red-necks trying to come up with a so-called plausible reason to not support Mr. Obama. Do you know what it is to a patriot? You think its some big talk about the flag? You think its going around the world bullying other nations can't defend themselves, much less attack us? You think its closing off opprotunities to those who just need a little assistance? then sayin that its right because they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps? Do you even know what the Bill Of Rights says? Do you even know what the first 10 articles of the Constitution say? Don't just pick and choose which ones you want to support. Go read it! Cause you most likely have not! The disgrace is yours, and those like you! who talk the big talk, but thats all it is! You and those like you are arrogant. Only seeing what you want, and think that yours the only way. President Bush hold his hand over his heart doing the singing of the National Anthem. He sings it also it seems. But he is not a Patriot! You have to look at what people do to further our country in its principals and values to know if they are patriotic. Not agree with them just because they in power, or the President. There is a part in the Bill of Rights that gives the power to the people to disband the government if the goernment does not do for the people what it is suppose to do. Why do you think the founding Fathers placed that in there? THINK! I don't agree with the President, but if any forign power or person comes against him, i'm with the President! Because hes our President, we deal with him in our way, not theirs!! So! A patriot is not so media show. Although it appears that people like yourself understand it in those terms.

Comment: Comment coming from Wyoming... How can Obama stand with his head held high and vow to the whole country that he will make a difference in the world if he is elected President of the United States when he stood on stage in front of the whole country and would not honor our traditions and disgracing of Nation by not singing the National Anthem or putting his hand over his heart? We are a Nation of power and we have sent our fathers, brothers, sons, daughters, sisters and mothers over to Iraq to fight for the freedom we have today and if Obama wants to Lead our Nation as our President then he should honor our Traditions and act like he cares about our country. There has been contraversy over the 10 Commandments and why they should not be displayed and if my memory serves me correctly and Federal Judge lost his position because he refused to take the 10 Commandments out of his chambers or off the courthouse lawn. We need a Leader who is going to stand up for what our countries historical beliefs and honor them as our Leader, not come in and disgrace our country by snobbin the National Anthem in front of the whole world.

Qu??, hab??is hecho las tres tucas?

Comment: Obama is truly a gentleman. Look at what he has done to the politics by staying above the fray. It forces everyone to rise above the usual negative name calling, insults, and blinding with half baked facts. It is quite refreshing! If what I am experienceing now is a preview of what the country will get in the future, then he needs the chance to shine. Clinton is good but brings a lot of baggage of the past. It can truly gridlock the country as we have seen lately. While Bill is a political genius, the last term reninds us of his stained image. I new beginning with someone like Obama will make us feel proud of America and restore the respect worldwide. Lilian

Comment: Seth Perlman/Associated Press reported In 1999, Barack Obama was faced with a difficult vote in the Illinois legislature ??? to support a bill that would let some juveniles be tried as adults, a position that risked drawing fire from African-Americans, or to oppose it, possibly undermining his image as a tough-on-crime moderate. In the end he voted "present"; to cover his political butt, NOT SOMETHING A LEADER WOULD DO. It shows his manipulation of a system he says is broken., perhaps if he voted his true beliefs the system might work. By avoiding the tough calls and not taking a stance by voting "present" he just shows he cares more about politics than real change.

    Illinois Senate

Barack Obama being sworn in as a Democratic state senator in Illinois in 1997. He was first elected in 1996 and left in 2004.

In the end, Mr. Obama chose neither to vote for nor against the bill. He voted ???present,??? effectively sidestepping the issue, an option he invoked nearly 130 times as a state senator.

Comment: All wonderful and heartwarming if you live in a fantasy world. The facts though are we do not live in Barak's 'land of hope' we live in reality and I guess Barak even knows this since he voted present 130 times in Illinois Senate rather than to actually vote his beliefs. He may talk tough but just look at that record! He was more concerned about covering his political ass than to vote his true beliefs. He has criticized Clinton on her Iran vote but SHE AT LEAST VOTED. He says the system is broke but what does he do about it---he covered his butt to avoid any fallout by voting "present'. The cowardly way out in my opinion and not up to the standards of the job of President.
