I imagine that many people, upon hearing the word "coca," automatically associate the plant with cocaine, and therefore label it as a bad thing that should be destroyed completely. The coca leaf is really a wonder plant, with numerous health benefits (why do you think the Incans became such a successful empire?).. Maybe if coca products were exported to other countries, people would see how great this product is, and coca farmers could get paid more than they do by cocaine dealers.

The United States has not responded officially to the legalization campaign, but is unlikely to support it, after spending so much to destory coca. Bolivian officials say controls could be put in place to make sure coca plants are not diverted to the cocaine trade, and that a legal coca industry would reduce the supply available to traffickers. Roberto Laserna, a Bolivian social scientist, says that since eradication has failed to cut the cocaine supply, the United States ought to consider a new approach. Over a harmless cup of tea, perhaps.
