Comment: On calcium: I have read that calcium intake from vegetables is much more healthy than from milk, since the body stores it longer. I drink soy milk that is supplemented with calcium and vitamins like B12, and I eat over 7 fruits and vegetables a day. It helps to look at nutrition tables to see what food items are high in nutrition. I recommend dried apricots, wheat germ, unpealed sesame seeds and almonds, that contain more than twice as much calcium as milk. Then there's rosehips that contain 3 times as much calcium as milk. Sesame seeds contain 980 mg per 100ml, compared to 117 mg in 100ml milk, according to my tables in my vegetarian cookbook. So the farmers lobby has more to do with the recommendations than health. Vegetables and fruits are more environmentally friendly than animal products, so eat lots of those. I always choose ecological food over pesticide treated 'ordinary' food, and I also buy Fair Trade certified items, like honey from Ghana and red wine from Argentina and sugar from Paraguay, that have the fair trade logos. By doing these things and also some other simple climate smart choices, I have managed to reduce my carbon footprint to below 1 tonne per year, so making good choices does have good consequences.

Comment: oh my gosh. this is ridiculous. There shouldn't even be a debate. The benefits of milk outweigh the costs. Anyone who has taken a nutrition course, or biochemistry for that matter knows how vital Calcium is to the body. A report in 2005 by the US FDA predicted that by 2020 half of all americans older than 50 will be at risk for fractures from osteoporosis and decreased bone mass." Although there are many factors for this, the main reason is a nutritional deficiency of Calcium. Milk seems to be the est source for this. Also, it has been shown in rats that a high calcium diet weighed less and had less body fat. The study found that when the Calcium was increased, both lean and fat rats showed reduced weight gain.
