Top designers are reinventing footwear previously reserved just for the beach. Now those flip-flops can serve you well far from the ocean. But these stylish sandals will cost you more than $1.99 plastic-ware from a department store.

Coach makes a metallic leather-and-suede sandal with beaded strap ($80; coach.com ). Stuart Weitzman's tan nappa thong sports a one-inch heel and matte-gold Swarovski crystal starfish ($250; stuartweitzman. com ). Taryn Rose's spring line includes platform thongs in leopard print, paisley and silver lizard ($295-$345; tarynrose. com ). Kate Spade's fun and funky leather fringe sandals, in green or coral, will add some pizzazz to any summer ensemble ($295; katespade.com ). The only question now is what you'll actually wear in the sand and surf.
