This is what you deserve for being so greedy. Be greatful that you are able to afford a nice house. Wake up from your sick fantasy world of golfing, yachts, wine, and designer crap. Most of us hard working Americans cannot afford Houses and are stuck renting forever. Get over youself, nobody likesto hear righ, greedy people whine boo hoo

My husband and I would give anything to be able to buy or build a home, Unfortunately my husband had multiple strokes at age 38 so all of our dreams have been put on hold for now, So my thoughts are that maybe this gentleman should realize before it's too late that money is not everythin.!!!!!!!!!

This is what happens when you let greed rule your life. What ever happened to choosing a home for the enjoyment of living in it?

What was nice about this article is how it pointed out that not everyone affected by the housing downturn is an irresponsible deadbeat like the media seems to portray. I see alot of posts on this board attacking these folks for building their dream, that seems kind petty. It might suprize folks in other parts of the country but in states like California, Arizona and Maryland $750,000 is really not that much to spend on a house.

    • Posted By: keepingmy$accessable @ 10/18/2007 3:48:42 PM

shortjames.....can't even fanthum that you would have a big enough brian to consider the fact that BECAUSE YOU AND EVERY OTHER MORON WHERE YOU LIVE WILLING PAID FOR THOSE OVERPRICED PARCLES OF WOOD ARE THE REASON THE PRICES ARE SO HIGH!

    • Posted By: Ranman @ 10/18/2007 1:33:59 PM

The are in Florida!!! Palm county $750k gets you a lot of house! And read close it seems like an investment not their "Dream Home"

      • Posted By: Phish @ 10/18/2007 2:11:08 PM

Then why is he lamenting over the extras he put into the house. This, again, is what's wrong with america today. "750,000 is really not that much to spend on a house." Do you hear yourself talking?

My husband and I would give anything to be able to afford to buy or build a small home, unfortunately he had multiple strokes at age 38, so therefor our dreams have been put on hold, Maybe this man should realize that there's more to life than money!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. McGinn; are you sorry that you wrote this article ???

  • Posted By: bradparkin @ 10/18/2007 3:46:00 PM

Is anyone surprised that a novice speculator like Mr. Elliott whose homebuilding capital was largely inherited blew it in the first round? I'll bet Elliott's father-in-law and the benefactor of his winfall learned the value of hard work and patient investing a lot earlier in life than his prodical son-in-law.

This article is ruined my day! These people built a dream house and now they ar worrying about the return of their investment in this house. Why are they even thinking about the return when they know from the begining what they were doing. They should be enjoying what they have and live that dream!!

  • Posted By: Tillerman @ 10/18/2007 3:45:22 PM

This article is borderline laughable. It's so bad that it's good. The Elliots should feel more like idiots for having this posted on Newsweek than the situation itself. Thanks for the laugh, Daniel.

Roger, get a grip on reality man. If you've got your dream house then why are you currently worried about its value. Live in it and enjoy your "dream". Get 20 years or more out of it and then worry about what it's worth. If the housing crunch hasn't ended by then chances are that we've all got more to worry about than the current market value of our house.

  • Posted By: kaar2261 @ 10/18/2007 3:44:16 PM

Give any of us $750,000 and we can show you how to appreciate what we could build. It's all about the money for them apparently... how about you enjoy what you've built instead of weeping and loosing sleep over it. Like others have said, it's only been a year for crying out loud.... buck up man... unbelievable...

  • Posted By: Sage of North Oaks @ 10/18/2007 3:43:33 PM

Roger, quit your whining and make a committment to your home. All this poor-me just doesn't wash. OK, you overbuilt, but you also have a joy to behold and live in. You can afford it, you're not about to be put out on the street like way too many others. Plan to stay for a while. Did you marry with the intention of staying for the long haul or getting out quickly if something went wrong? Same for houses. Enjoy it for the long term, then be pleasantly surprised when you find, years later, that is increased in value.

Gee martees, maybe a little jealousy on your part? Or maybe you just think everyone should live a meager living and give the excess to the government to be redistributed? Maybe to you there is "absolutely no reason" but if you have worked hard and can afford a nice big house with all the fixings, why is that so wrong? Keep the class warfare out of it please.

The real intent of this piece was to show how no one can take for granted the continuing escalation in property values. The days when you could build a house and finance 100% and then sell it in 5 years and take a boat load of appreciated equity with you are probably gone for now.

    • Posted By: keepingmy$accessable @ 10/18/2007 3:42:28 PM

No neil0311 we're not jealous, we're PISSED at fat heads like you who drive the market up so high that it became unobtainable for those of us who are stiil Waiting To Exhale in a home of our own. YOU CAD!

    • Posted By: retiredinnevada @ 10/18/2007 2:05:23 PM

Well if he can afford a nice big house...why is he complaing about a 10% drop in appreciation. like most pople they over extend and when something negative happens their out on a limb. we the people who live within our means are the ones who are going to have to pay for the mistates of overextenders

      • Posted By: rogerally @ 10/18/2007 2:15:12 PM

How are you going to pay for my mistakes? Its exactly the opposite. You are retired and I am likely funding your Social Security income. Be thankful for people like me.

This is hardly a response from someone who is as Bible-knowledgeable as you, sir. If you are a Christian, you wouldnt have published this piece in the first place of your upper class financial situation! Not to mention, react to everyone's postings as you are! You asked for it!

  • Posted By: yourmom @ 10/18/2007 3:41:33 PM

Maybe if you werent so greedy in the first place you would not "have personal angst". Like another poster said, quit whining. Most people cannot even afford a "modest" house. Be greatful that you were able to build a home and still be able to make your mortgage every month.

  • Posted By: letschat @ 10/18/2007 3:41:04 PM

You have got to be kidding me, right?!?!?!?!?!?! Some people never own a home and here is this guy complaining about it. Maybe they should move to a shelter and let the homeless live there instead!!!!

  • Posted By: Tillerman @ 10/18/2007 3:40:05 PM

You built a 750k yet affordable house that you and everyone else love, then pout b/c you can't sell it today and turn a profit? That doesn't sound like a nightmare, nor a dream house, as the article's title implies. I'd call that an investment that may or may not provide a return, and nothing more. Build a dream house to satisfy your...uhhh...dreams, not your wallet.

  • Posted By: Iskabibble7 @ 10/18/2007 3:38:47 PM

That's a tragedy??? These people are loaded with big bucks...I don't consider their house some sort of
tragedy.....do we need a crying towel?
