HELMUT NEWTON, 83
Photographic visionary Newton challenged ordinary notions of sexuality and influenced fashion photography for more than 40 years. He was best known for his fashion editorials in Vogue, Vanity Fair and Playboy. In 1999 he caused a stir with the release of "Sumo"; it was the largest photo book ever released at the time and was sold with a Philippe Starck stand to hold it up. Newton was often called a misogynist for his portrayal of nude women in provocative situations--a criticism that he dismissed as "silly." "Why would I spend my life with women, whether they are dressed or undressed, if I didn't like women?" he told NEWSWEEK last November. "In all the photographs, the women are triumphant and the men are just toys."
BOB KEESHAN, 76 He was only 28 when he started playing a grandfather, and he played him for more than 30 years. "Captain Kangaroo" was the longest-running children's show in network-TV history, a gentle, homespun companion.
