Comment: The following Email was sent to me by the author of the message below. My response follows his.
Hello, my name is Xaqu??n G.V. Assistant Art Director at Newsweek. The online edition if the magazine has done this interactive graphic about gangs in the US and, as you are -your site- has been one of the main sources: if you miss something, if you have any comments, clarifications or corrections about the content. Here's the link:

    Gangland U.S.A.
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/54180

    Thank you very much.

    Xaqu??n

    My Response:

    Hello Xaquin,

I received your Email about the gangs online and I have several comments. I have no problem with the backgrounds provided in ???Most Dangerous??? list, but I think that you need to do more research for the ???Map The Gangs??? page.

The problem is you don???t show some of the gangs in areas where the gangs originated or where there are heavy concentrations of the gangs.

For example, you do not show the Border Brothers or Sinaloa Cowboys as being in California. Nor do you show the Rollin??? 20???s, the Rollin???60???s or the Grape Street Crips as being in California. All of the gangs have a strong presence in the state.

The two links below will give you an idea of the origin and whereabouts of the gangs mentioned above:

    http://www.gangsorus.com/otherprison.html

    http://www.streetgangs.com/crips/

For the state of South Carolina, you list the Aryan Brotherhood, Black Mafia, and the Young Guns. All of these are gangs of little or no consequence in the state, if they even still exist. The state has a very heavy presence of Bloods, Mara Salvatrucha and others. There are many Five Percenters locked up in the prison system where they have been declared a Security Threat Group since 1995.

According to a 2005 survey taken by researchers at the University of South Carolina the following gangs are in South Carolina:

    Gang Name Number of Gangs

    Bloods 53

    Crips 43

    Folk Nation

    Latin Kings 7

    Mara Salvatrucha 19

    Gangster Disciples 6

Based on these examples, I can not help but believe that there are other states that have errors and omissions similar to those that I have listed. People who work with gangs will be very quick to see discrepancies; particularly those persons who are in law enforcement.

While I thank you for your Email message, and also Newsweek, for using me as a source for your information, I must request that you remove my name and that of my web site from the credits of the online article. I am sure that you can understand that I do not want to be associated with something that appears to be incorrect or incomplete.

    Thank you very much,

Comment: The reality is that criminals produce jobs. It brings jobs by bringing in more law enforcement officers; it brings jobs for the court systems and for the correctional institutions. More criminals, means more money. Let???s imagine for a moment, what would happen if there was no more crimes in America. Law enforcement agencies would be hit drastically, lawyers would be out of jobs for lack of cases etc, etc, etc???..
Let???s face it; it???s a multi-billion dollar industry. In the end it???s all about the money, we have the capability to eliminate the problem but why would you shoot your self in the head over a headache. When it gets out of hands, then we have raids and areas flooded with more officers, but only when it gets out of hand. This is the sad reality that we all have to live with; the hope is that we never become the next victim of a criminal act.

you are right. People, Folks, crips, and bloods are four totally separate and distinct organizations with completely independent histories, laws, codes and creeds. Ironically, there are more similarities between People and Folks, and between crips and bloods. This map also greatly underestimates the territories of the larger organizations.

Comment: minerb u sound like uz *** faded as all hell. go bak home rednek. GD isnt a crip gang. its a 6 (folk) gang. different gangs, different symbols. most crips go to 6s, when they move to those areas, and vice versa. also, kings and such be 5 (people) gang. im from huntington park (-LA- ) and been all over, and now by denver. gangs are 4 sections. bloods, crips, 5s, and 6s. if ya want to have it set up to the T, thats how u should do it. then break it down from those 4.

Comment: man minerb sounds dumb as all hell. eyh mayne. who ever made this, needs to know a few of the differences. GD is a 6, no a crip. There are Bloods, Crips, 5s, and 6s. 5s are people, such as kings and lords, while 6s are people such as BGD, GD, and the such. They are different. Most crip members change to a 6 gang when they move to those areas, and vice versa. The same goes with bloods and 5s, although some crips will go to 5s too. Im from Cali, from the Huntington Park Area, and I have been all over, and am now by Denver. socom_rage@hotmail.com

Comment: Americans have lost control. There exists a fear across the land. The fear is of saying 'no'. If I say no I may look like the bad guy. If we don't treat our murderous prisoners well we will look mean-spirited. Heaven forbid!

Comment: Newsweek. If you're really onboard with gangs being one of the most altering problems in the last century in these United States, then why do you relagate this issue to an oped in your extra section? This national problem should be given its due and be featured in an issue. This cancer on the American landscape has already changed our everyday life. Maybe you should better ask why is it hip to dress like gang members, and why parents tollerate it. Why does the violence in the music and entertainment industries sell?
Why are gangs allowed to dominate in our correctional facilities? Parents who don't care or are never there
for their children may be the root of the problem, but stating the obvious isn't a fix to this problem.
The only power most Americans have in a united problem as this is their vote. The days of being soft, ignoring, and accepting of this cancer in our society, because of our freedoms, have obviously come full circle.
Politics run this country of ours, like it or not. Hopefully someone will throw their hat in the ring that actually
cares about problems that effect everyday citizens. If we're fortunate enough for this to occur, no matter what party they represent, we have to support change. In a nutshell we have the power if we choose to make it a priority.

    • Posted By: ITiZwuTiTiS @ 11/15/2007 3:02:48 PM

Comment: You just answered your own questions and concerns. Politics...Every *** running this country.....THEY'RE THE MOST NOTORIOUS GANG OUT THERE. The real ones running this SHh. Therefore, unless they fix the way they run there SHh.....this issue is always going to be an issue. If you really think about how gangs come about, and their purpose...it's everything our hypicritacal government is. They're the ones who started this whole mess FROM THE VERY BEGINING! SO...with that said, nothings ever gonna change. It's the way life's supposed to be. All we can do, is set the example by every thing we do and say in life. It may sound corny..but real talk.....speaking from experience of living that life style.....If you've ever seen that movie "Pay it forward," in all reality.........it's up to me and you to make the change. The government WONT DO JACK SHh.

Comment: I would like to know how many gang members had a law abiding tax paying father in their life up to that point when they joined their gang. We need to make abandoning a child a real crime. I would also like to know how it is that law abiding citizens who end up living in the shadow of gangs are denied their civil rights by their own local and state governments? Why shouldn???t a lawful citizen be able to match fire power with these criminals? How is it that their government can deny them their constitutional right to bear arms and then not be there to defend them?

Comment: Hopes and dreams, sending violent youth into the military may not be such a great idea image a gang with military training vs the ones today and tell me you want to send these kids into the military. To the folks saying lets send the military into the streets and clean house, are you crazy? You want to pit American soldiers against American gang mowing down them down as they go? That kind of blood lust is what drives most of the gang related crimes in this country to begin with. As far as calling "them" terriost and choosing to wipe them off the face of the Earth, take a look at the last time we tried that with Iraq. Going into 5 years of active military action and still we can't stop the terriost, in fact there are countless more terriost in Iraq now then there was before U.S. occuption, so no strong arming people into your way of thinking will not fix the problem. It just gives them more ways to recurit. The best way to stop this madness is 1. Reform the prison system, stop the flow of drugs and information to and from prisons, maintain constant intergty checks on prison staff, make any gang related activity in jail extend your sentence automatically, and stop letting these people out on probation in the same cities they came from make 100 mile relocation manditoary for probation 2. Reinvest war monies into schools and jobs (if you look at Iraq now as compared to 2003 yes it has been a waste of our soldiers lives, and country's wealth) so joing a gang has less benefits 3. Stay with me on this last one make immagrating into this country eaiser. Because people are going to cross our boders no matter how many walls you put up and patrols go out, and if its eaiser to come to the U.S. government (who can help with job/housing placement, education, and learning english) do you really think these people will keep going to gangs for help?

Comment: It seems to me all of the points made so far are all valid. However, I feel there is a certain age when there is no turning back from the "gang" mentality. Believe it or not I believe these member female and male posses certain talents that we should help them realize. Prison doesn't rehabilitate it keeps them thinking their nothing. Their allegiance and dedication is a very attractive to ONE gang that needs their help. IT'S THE MILITARY all branches. There should be a mandatory sentence for males and female that are between the ages of 17 to 30 should be sent directly to the military and based on what skill they select to learn for a minimum of 5 years after their 3rd offense. Train them in 6 month intervals and have them fight for a purpose (Our County) instead of each other. For those that can pass an SAT. Train them for the administrative jobs within the military. Give them something great they can be proud of belonging to. Instead of the prison gang and being a cancer on our society.
The benefits will be to truly rehabilitate and stock our military. Reduce our prison population. Reduce the cost of public assistance, courts, public programs for these folks. We would really rehabilitate and strengthen our military. Make productive individuals to the human society. Obviously, there will be folks that we will not be successful with. For them it would be jail. In jail, instead of out sourcing toy making and sewing each prison contract with the Mattel's and Nike's type of organizations for work. Make the US stronger.

Comment: My vote is simple remove gangs from American history outlaw all gang activity and membership. If more prisons are needed billed them, our society needs a zero tolerance for gang activity. Simply wearing a gang related mark should be a minimum 10 year prison sentence. I do not want to hear about education and understanding of a troubled youth. Have a family member killed by a random gang act of violence and then talk to me about understanding. I have none. My brother was shot about three years ago at the local mall when a car of gang members pulled up and unloaded there weapons hoping to hit the guy they were aiming for. Understanding? Oh I understand! I understand that gangs have taken control of America and unless we stop them now we will not be able to do common everyday things in the future. Simply going to the store will be something you are afraid to do. Gangs should be treated like terrorists. the government should be more concerned with the affairs of state and put soldiers on our streets with orders to capture any and all none terrorists.

Comment: What abaout the 3rd and 4th generation gang members? Their families have stressed a belief in self...as a criminal. And I doubt these folks are particularly misunderstood..I think we understand their mission quite well. I agree that prison should not resemble a personal fitness facility, or a tattoo parlor, but none of these folks are making use of the GED they are"given" in prison..they go right back to the lifestyle if and when they get out, and start all over again. I suppose if you deported all of the gang and gang related members who are illegals, you might make a small dent in the population, but I doubt it would have any long lasting effect. We tolerated and popularized criminal behavior through movies, televison, and the digustung rap genre, so we get what we are paying for as a society. Schools have no power to discipline, and society would rather place blame than take responsibility. Rehabilitation is not possiblr here, no matter how many psych and social work majors would like to believe that everyone is inherently good. Some folks just aren't. What is the solution? I don't know, but I do know this: nothing good every comes from lawmakers who fear a backlash from the cultural diversity police.

Comment: The problem starts in the home. If these gangs had families that stressed education and a belief in themselves, I don't think we would have such a huge problem on our hands. Unfortunately, alot of these gangs have gang parents who think it is alright to handle lifes obstacles with a gun or a knife. I'm all for having these guys give something back by having them clean up the streets and highways, even have them clean the writings on the wall, instead of giving them a weight to build up their bodies so they can go back on the streets and do the same thing they did before they landed in the brink! Teach them respect, teach them tolerance, and teach them education. They are not stupid people, some are very talented, smart, misunderstood youths.

Comment: As a teenager I was a good friend to some gang members but not involved myself. When I was 18 I was arrested and sent to prison where I was then surrounded by gangs. I went into prison just a friend, but came out a full fledged member. I'm 30 now and had to move 1,500 miles away from my home just to be able to sleep at night. I'm not sure prison is the answer for anything including gang members. What is the alternative though?

Comment: Obviously gangs are a major problem in the States, but I believe a great deal of effort and resources should be focus on why they develop in the first place and why people join gangs and to prevent these. The solution to stopping gangs can perhaps be found in eliminating the source from which they draw members. If we take away the problems and issues present in society that make gangs so appealing to youths and others people, that will be a major blow to gangland America. Incarcerations will help, but if gangs have a steady supply of recruits, there will be no end. Target gangs mainly at the source rather than at their outcome. For example, You can make as many drug bust as you want, but until you stop the supply of dealers coming in, there will always be people selling drugs. And even if you arrest a criminal, it is likely there is another criminal to take his/her place. Take for example poaching that occurs in Africa, some reserves have instituted a shoot on site policy for poachers, greatly reducing the desire and number of poachers on those reserves. I'm not advocating that for a solution to gangs, but stricter punishments and a zero tolerance policy may be the key starting point to driving fear into the often popularized gang life.

Comment: I am afraid that a there is no such thing as a utopian socialist society. This type of society is not the answer to our gang problems. We have tried so many of your stupid social programs and all that it taught was that they need not be responsible for themselves. Another thing that it taught was that if they don't give you enough take it from someone else. There is but one answer to gang violence. If you are arested for gang violence, regardless of ethnic background, you should be taken out and shot. I for one would recall the military from around the world and put them to the task of eradicating our nation of this cancer.

Comment: Gangs are a result of the breakdown of our systems ie: family, healthy social systems in our country. The problem is that the symptoms are being addressed: Gangs. What is the root of this problem, the true disease? Lack of morals, values, integrity, character being instilled in young people. Parents having children and not being healthy themselves and then discarding them to society to raise...Humans are social creatures and will find a way to survive and be a part of a social circle, family so to speak... No, I do not have the answers and it is an extremely overwhelming and complicated issue, obviously...But let's start truly looking at the root causes of why these types of societies are developed and why so many feel the need to become involved.. It is a dysfunctional sense of family.....

Comment: This scares me a lot. Not to offend anybody but they are focusing so much on the war in Iraq, but there are HUGE problems in the US, such as this! Why don't we take some of the billions of dollars going into war and destruction and try to HELP these troubled people in the gangs? People just don't start gangs for fun, there are deep reasons to WHY people are in gangs. Lets take a step back and look how dangerous this is in America! Everyone wants the best for their children, so lets start now at getting that achieved.

  • Posted By: Su Cuibo @ 10/29/2007 1:30:30 PM

Comment: The US has created this problem by not demanding that blacks take responsibilty for their actions (they always blame others when something goes wrong) and allowing tens of thousands of low class, ignorant latinos to come to the US! I point out these two ethnic groups because they make up a large percentage of gang members in the US and their cultures are more prone to violence. Also, I am sick of my tax money going to support an ever increasing prison population. The Immigration and Education policies that the US has had in place over the years have failed. People that want to make an honest and quiet living are now beginning to feel the threat that these worthless people cause to our communities.

Comment: The solution is to get super tough and start executing gang members, repeat violent offenders, rapist, child molesters. Turn all life sentences into execution sentences. The problem with good people is that they have too weak of a stomach to properly deal with and address the scum of the earth. Would you let cancer exist in your body if you could lock it up, and hope that it doesn't get out. No, you eliminate the cancer immediately before it spreads and then is too late to do anything about. The time is now, Our country has been invaded by millions of cancerous type criminals. The good people of this country need to grow a back bone and start executing hundreds, if not thousands of criminals every day, before it's too late!

Comment: The US created this problem by not demanding that blacks take reposibility for their own actions (letting them complain all the time) and allowing too many low class, ignorant latinos to come to the US! I point out these two ethinic groups because they make up a large part of the gangs throughout the US.

Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
