To brianfife: You must be very young to assume that you have all the answers to such weighty matters. You accuse professionals of being too "intellectual" to consider truth. Here's some truth for you: The "cure rate" for bona fide DID cases is quite low in psychiatry, and absolutely no better with exorcisms/spiritual intervention. Unfortunately, you may not have the entire market cornered on "Truth."

Anyone who can overcome the abuse and lead somewhat of a normal life like she is doing should be commended....The abuse she suffered at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect her is terrible and those animals will be taken care of in the end...may God Bless Her....

I had always believed MPD existed, but it became more understandable when, during a severe emotional trauma in my life, I "dissociated" myself from my body in order to survive an event I thought I would not be able to live one more moment. It didn't last but a few mins., but I actually SAW my physical body acting out the power I did not feel I had one more ounce left to exist. It was as though I was looking at myself from above, and the person I saw spoke and acted in ways that were totally beyond my character. I was ready to do things to survive that I would usually not have ever even conceived. This brought more to light how the mind can do whatever it needs to do in order to survive....whatever!!! Thus, those few moments in my life, which were not NEAR what MPD people experience, helped me to understand how a person can split or even momentarily dissociate and commit acts that they would not usually do....but, do it out of survival instinct. Whether we feel one "snaps" or whatever.....it DOES exist and when it does, one does NOT have power or control over that "person" who has emerged in order to protect the survival of the host. My "little girl" had emerged and after 7 years of intense therapy, I came meet her and to love her. Thank goodness she is asleep now..at rest, because I have learned, as the adult, how to protect and empower MYSELF. I thank her everyday for stepping up to the plate and protecting me when I could no longer do so. My compassion goes out to all of us out there who have "protectors". Thank goodness we did!

Obviously it???s a little more complicated than just choosing not to deal with life problems. You can???t really make assumptions like that after only reading a summary of an entire book. You weren???t there during 17 years of therapy; therefore you have not idea what she or the doctor went through. She is human and so are you; try to have a little compassion for real life issues rather that just make the assumptions that people are trying to escapes life???s many problems. The fact that you were so judgmental about a person you don???t even know, gives reason to wonder how judgmental you are with people you don???t know.

Good article. As someone who has spent many years treating people with all types of mental illness, I can positively affirm that most cases do not involve people trying to "get attention" - though there are a few. I can also see the paralells between some mental health problems and "demon posession," and it's an intriguing idea to compare them. Unfortunately, too many folks rely solely on spiritual avenues for healing, to the exclusion of all modern science and medicine. While psychiatry clearly has its limitations, just like all other medical treatment, most people don't depend on praying their way out of cancer. Mental illness is no different. Sure, pray like everything depends on God, but also work like everything depends on you.

As an "Adult-child" of 2 very severely mentally ill parents, all I can say is SIMPLY AMAZING - SIMPLY EXCELLENT - SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL, after what no one [or VERY few] can understand in terms of the work every step must have taken to accomplish a great sense of "success" !
