I'm glad I'll be dead soon before things get really bad. Nice world you and your kids, and your grandkids will inherit. All of you. No peace in sight, and no hope, and hate preached from every corner. Women made slaves and children made soliders from generation to generation to generation. Yes what a wonderful world your children will inherit.

f US had been honest in comabting extremism in Pakistan, it would have:
        1) Helped in the restoration of genuine democracy in Pakistan, with civilian control of military accepted both in theory and practice. We know how ISI and Pakistan's military had been in cohorts with US central command agenda for the whole region
        2) Helped promote the gunuine educational reforms , not the cosmetic ones targeting the bogey of Islamic indoctrination. Universal literacy, based on mother tongue, and the quality eduaction in science and techonlogy are the sure ways to raise the quality of human capital, the most effective and long lasting antidote against any form of bigotry. US has frustated any attempt at genuine educational revolution in in Pakistan. The result is an extremely fragment educational system which produces western snobs and salvish mindset on the one hand, and raw bigotry on the other
        3) Supported Pakistan on her just stand on the Kashmir issue. The Kashmir issue should not be entangled with this whole world wide jehad thing: it is a genuine national liberation struggle beiing brutally repressed by Indian army. By any standards of the civilized world POTA is a draconian law, but you rarely see US media commenting about indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir. And then US wonder why there is so much anit-american sentiment in Pakistan.
        4) Helped the genuinly progressive forces in Pakistan standing for the end of feudalism and mass literacy and modernization of institutions. On the contrary it is either backing corrupt militaray junta or equally corrupt politicians.

        5) Ended the occupation of Afghanistan, which is fueling the resistance movement in Afghanistan and adjoining areas. If it is wary of Talibans, the better option would have been to establish a consensus government backed by OIC and regional players like Iran, india and Pakistan. HOw much money has US spent towards the rebuilding of the ravaged country of Afghanistan? They had a part in destroying it and now illegaly occupying it, and don't feel any obligation towards rebuilding , and then they accept afghans who have thousands of years of history of resistance to accept all this lying down. Not only that, US expects Pakistasn to be a partner in the crime, and help them in their illegal adventure, and with no blow back. All that balatant injustice is then totally glossed over in the most shameless media in the world , the USA, by laying all the blame at the door of islamic militancy! Even, Goebels could have learnt a thing or two from the so called free press of the usa

This is the most biased most hatered most unresearched report. I am sure the author of this article is completely an extremist, and the editors of newsweek have gone mad and biased they are following the directions of their government which has already opened its mouth to eat the nuclear asset of pakistan, This american government is following the direction of their illegal father Guess???. This has already started hurting the minds and hearts of secular thinking majority of Pakistani people and i am one of them, and even by reading and watching these kind of biased reports, the perception is rapidly changing towards the americans. I am afraid if some of more of this kind of reports published this will completely change the perception of even moderate pakistanis toward west, the responsibility would be only on american media and government, which is not showing responsiblity and showing fake and biased reports, and i think if all this continued that will result in an american attack on pakistan, and very frankly speaking there is not a single point of doubt in my mind that this will encourage other powers to interfere in this this war and that could lead to the World War 3 and could also result in the end of this world. Think about it.....

I heard that the American are the most ignorant people on this earth. They don???t know nothing about their own country . An American of Washington does not know anything about New York, but today they proved that their intelligentsia is of the same level in regard to knowledge and Global information. The fake intellectualism of Newsweek exposed today by writing such a stupid biased article if at all we can name it as an article. We also feel pity for the Hindu Naval Langa of India who shamelessly wrote and interfere in our domestic affairs. He is worried about the life of Benazir Bhutto and in case of her death the loss to democracy. He should know it that democracy has nothing to do with individuals. His country lost Indra ghandi and Rajvi, what difference it brought to India.
The News week wrote that ???Militant Islamist groups that were originally recruited, trained and armed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) " I feel sorry for the poor knowledge of the writer. He does not know that the Islamist Group by the name of Taliban was the brain child of America to make them fight against USSR. They were trained by ISI but with direct support in shape of Huge Finance and logistic by USA. The cridit of creating Talibans Goes to USA. We know That there are Talibans or No Talibans USA wil attack us as in the case of IRAq. The world community, may it be UN can not stop USA attacking Pakistan. Iraq was attacked to recover Mass distruction weapons , But the whole world knows that nothing could be recovered from IRAQ, Yet the world community failed to ask USA to leave IRAQ.
We are in stone age , Might is Right is the Law of Land ( world).

It is interesting to note that Fareed Zakaria the editor of Newsweek International hails from an Indian Muslim family who have been quite dismissive of Pakistan. half of his paternal family migrated to Lahore (his Uncle Naseem Zakaria was the principal of F.C. College). I think.Fareed still has this bias about Pakistan which seems to creep into editorial decisions such as this.

Shame on Pakistan. Pakistan was created based on religion. Jinna, the founding father had a dream that one day Muslim in Pakistan would be example for rest of the world in culture, science, economy, and humanity. But shame on Pakistan, people of Pakistan went in other direction. Irony is that both India and Pakistan were born from same culture and ethnicity; one is growing for good and the other for bad at the same time.

SHAME ON NEWSWEEK, SHAME ON NEWSWEEK, SHAME ON NEWSWEEK!!!

Benazir Bhutto is a mediocre daughter of Zulfiqar A. Bhutto. She was born with a silver foot in her mouth. She talks big, but she didn't deliver as 2 time Prime Minister of Pakistan for a total of 5 years. She is the most inept leader that Pakistanis can ask for with the mismanagement of Governement, and embezzlement of the billions of dollars of peoples' money that Pakistanis had to endure under her rule.

She wears designer suits, and then talks of alleviating poverty for millions of Pakistanis. Where was she in the last eight years? A self imposed exile? She was scooting from Dubai to London to New York, lived in 3 different swanky homes in the world's 3 most expensive cities. O God, Pakistanis wonder where that money came from? Maybe she was making the rounds of offices of Goldman Sachs, or Merrill Lynch and imploring them to invest her loot more wisely? .

And to extol Asif Zardari as a credible source for this piece is ridiculous. This is the man who pillaged and plundered the peoples' money when he was in power. The fact remains that during Ms. Bhutto's time as PM, there was not one Prime Minister, there were 2 Prime Ministers in the Prime Minister house. And this man didn't spare a single chance of showing his corruption binge, and his lust for abusing his powers.

Also, I wonder how much money did NEWSWEEK get from Benazir Bhutto's lobbyists sitting in Washington to do her bidding in making sure that she is seen as the only moderate person in Pakistan. That is an insult to the thinking and the intellect of the 160 million Pakistanis.

Pakistanis are well aware of the low calibre of Governmental skills that Benazir exhibits which is the reason why she will recieve a thumping from the people at the polls in January.

It is completely wrong, objectionable and defective statement by Newsweek. I was not expecting such an irresponsible and weak statement from a veteran magazine like Newsweek. I wonder how can you even compare Pakistan and Iraq? In Iraq there are dozens of innocent people dying everyday since the invasion started. Perhaps there does not pass a single day without a bomb blast in Iraq. How can someone compare Iraq to Pakistan? Just because there was this incident on 18th October? How can a veteran and experienced magazine like Newsweek be so biased and wrong? I really don???t understand. In the article there are absolutely no arguments why the writer thinks so. The picture of Pakistan shown in the article is completely false. Authors seem totally unaware and confused about the ground realities of Pakistan. I doubt the capability of these authors. Newsweek is certainly promoting the American agenda here. I wonder is Newsweek also becoming something as horrible as Fox news. And by the way if Pakistan is becoming dangerous, it is only because of America who just wants to destabilize and invade every other country for number of reasons everyone knows. Now America is only creating reasons to make the world believe that Pakistan's nuclear weapon is in dangerous hands, it is only creating excuses to invade Pakistan. This is America's propaganda and this article is part of it.
I strongly disagree and denounce Newsweek and feel very sorry for it.

The 140 who died on the terrorists??? attack in Pakistan were not as fortunate as Benazir Butto who has miraculously survived. But for a moment suppose Benazir was not spared and is dead (God bless her), what would have happened in Pakistan? It would have immediately curtailed the Pakistani people???s dream of having a democratic government. In addition the military rulers, still reluctant to remain away from absolute power, would have got a Godsend chance to be harsher on the terror groups. For doing so they might have assumed more powers to suppress the people of Pakistan. The terrorist groups who plan such attacks should know that in such a situation they would be at greater loss. -Naval Langa, INDIA.

You guys are confused and do not know the facts in the ground. You are playing in the hand of U.S Govt to lay down ground work for U.S direct intervention and intrusion in Pakistan. The US has already made unresolvable problem and mess in Iraq. Now after failing there the focus is to move it to Pakistan area. You guys are supporting the World Warr III wish of President Bush..... Keep up the good work.

At least get your facts right - having "writers" access to a publication like Newsweek, at a minimum requires, as sense of responsible journalism. I am discontinuing my subscription to Newsweek!

I was disgusted by the authors who wrote this article. Zardari was quoted as a credible source of information and Quaid, the founder of the nation was called a "whisky-swilling" leader. Bravo! I almost laughed when I read that. This article epitomizes bunch of idiots who know nothing about the world's situation beyond the boundaries of the US. Please educate yourself on criminals like Zardari and Benazir before you make ludicarous claims about Pakistan. I rest my case.

what a joke. looks like this article is written by kids- without any research work. at least 8-10 discrepancies a lay man like me can found. Newsweek has become Rumorsweek. its sad.

  • Posted By: Khalid @ 10/25/2007 11:37:38 AM

Yes. Pakistan has problems like many other nations, today. But it does not deserve the venemous and insulting tone of this report.

The problems in Pakistan are partly due to international geopolitical reasons. During the cold war, the Soviet Union almost attacked Pakistan when the United States spy planes were flying out of the northern air bases in Pakistan to spy on the Soviet Union. That was the price Pakistan paid for being allied to USA and is still paying the price. The Influx of Afghani people, arms, guns and drugs in Pakistan accelerated during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan when USA used Pakistan as it's anti-Soviet base. It was the US money and support that created and supported the Al-Qaeda and Talibans. Pakistan is still dealing with it's consequences.

The Newsweek article is shamelessly one sided. It fails to recognize and report on the past history and the backdrop of the current insurgency and infiltration by undesireable elements in the Pakistani society.

The description of the father of the nation, Mr. Mohammed Ali Jinnah as " Whsiky-swilling" is an unwanted and intentional insult to every Pakistani citizen. It is an ainsult to the whole movement that lead to the independance from the clutches of the British Raj.

There is no reason to print the photograph of a page from the Holy Quran. The Quran has nothing to do with the story except to give an impression that somehow the Arabic verses in the Holy Quran on that page support the violence and all that is negatively depicted in the article. Shame on the Editors and the Management of Newsweek for such an intentional mischief.

I have cancelled my subscription to Newsweek and have no desire to read this magazine in the future.
