This comment has some valid points. I thought at first it was directed at me for my pro-nuke stance, till I reached the last line. I do expect to get some strong responses, probably mostly-negative, on my opinion, but wanted to address some of the points here I thought were valid. I certainly DO agree the U.S. is a highly-dangerous nation with George Bush at the helm, and with the many minions of "it's Republican so it must be right" voters behind him. We have decades of spying, subterfuge and bad decisions to atone for. I even think it possible that people at the highet levels of our government might have known about the planes and did nothing; a similar allegation was made about Pearl Harbor at the time, and may very well have been true As far as who has used the bomb in the past, well, it's US and we DECISIVLY ended the second world war with them. There is no similar discrete enemy to attack now. But who kills more innocents? It's the radical Islamists that blow up anyone and everyone they can, and seem to care nothing for their earthly life while most people do. To make but one example, a prohibition on MUSIC??? People like the Taliban surely are among the most evil in history. My point is is that attacks and civiloian deaths will continue no matter what we in America do; meanwhile, the madreassas in Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia (and other places) churn out CHILDREN without the capacity to think. They are simply walking, talking hand-grenades. The far-right wing in the U.S. (I'm ashamed to say) does the same thing with its children, just minus the explosives (so far). So we (America) DO have alot to answer for, but we're not the ones who started attacking cities with jetliners or calling for the extermination of Israel. Good luck to us all. PS: I was unable to view most of what I've typed as I typed it, so apologies for any misspellings.

PS by Maxcue: I didn't make the "use nukes" comment lightly. There are so many other reasons Pakistan should be hit: they spread nuclear technology to unstable/terrorist states; as a strong message to IRAN of what [should] come if needed to stop their march towards nuclear capability (if we don't nuke them, Israel WILL have the guts) and, I believe, to actually *lower* the death toll a decades-long war with the Islamists will extract.

  • Posted By: maxcue @ 10/22/2007 1:48:36 PM

The U.S. should use nuclear weapons to wipe out the rat's nest of radical Islamists concentrated so tightly in Pakistan. Political (and literal) fallout would be real but we could hardly do worse than we are now, with nearly the entire world hating us AND us failing. We are just putting off the inevitable, as WW 3 already started on 9/11.

A good article about Bhutto family policies, Pakistan and International policies

    Dear all,

No one should be trying to be unrealistic here. All I need to say is that we as a nation need discuss our problems on national platforms rather than international. Newsweek article has a few hard facts but it paints an image of Pakistan which does not exist. Why dont people realize that 70 percent of the people in Pakistan are poor. They are not extremists, or anything. They do not even care who is the government because they are not able to come out of their own problems. A poor person who cant even guarantee having a meal for themselves 2 times a day, will not care about what goes on at the broader level. Therefore, please do not try to paint the image of Pakistan on the celebrities ie. politicians, army top leadership, terrorists.

I write a blog by the name of http://pakcentric.blogspot.com which tries to provide a different perspective than the one portrayed in this article above.

Look at the comments: Pakistanis exist to be "Indiacentric". Deal with your own problem people. We indians really don't have much against you. Let me tell you. I am a minority Chriatian from India. Yes there are fanatics everywhere. But overall this is a very tolerant country - democratic, but with limits posed by blackmoney and corruption.

For westerners who do n't know; It has always been better for peace when there was Military rule in Pakistan. Bhuttos were war mongers and generally thrived on cheap international politics and wars while leaving the country for the dogs.

India is not a saint. 70,000 kashmiris killed by Indian forces. Why does india not let Kashmiri people decide for true freedom.. cuz india knows that they choose not to live with India and be seprate state. India and democracy is a joke.

Oh yes, the notion of Pakistan being the most dangerous nation in the world is completely crazy. None of the "Islamic" parties have had more than 15% of the vote and our Armed forces are quite in control and I'd rather have them than "elected" officials who have historically always been corrupt. Countries were the religious are much more in control of the nation such as the BJP in India (right wing Hindu), Israel is completely governed off religion, the NeoCons in charge of the White House right now and so many more. Places that have a greater chance of starting WWIII than Pakistan and a greater threat to the world are numerous: USA, Russia, Israel, Iran to name just a few. BUT I guess for Newsweek this will sell more publications.

    • Posted By: basava raju @ 10/22/2007 10:44:26 AM

BJP is not part of the present Indian government. But you army has many Islamists.

      • Posted By: saeed2 @ 10/22/2007 10:58:29 AM

Pakistani Islamic parties have never won an election but the BJP, a well known hard right wing Hindu party has been in power. It was very much involved in the destruction of many Muslim Masjids and in radical behavior. The Pakistani army is the strongest Pakistani institution and I'm sure it hurts Indians that a nation 1/4 their size has kept pace with them on all fronts up to the last few years. Only now has India become a financial powerhouse for some but it still leaves the vast majority of it's population living on less than $1 a day and in starvation as the rich plunder the country. And talking radical religious behavior: Only this weekend was the deputy mayor of Delhi killed by monkeys that Hindus won't control because they consider them "God", this is the same nation that won't lets animals roam the streets considering them all "Gods", the same nation that wouldn't destroy a bridge because the Monkey King had some fight there, the same nation which has had leaders in the past that drank the piss of cows for the same reason. So my point is that every nation has its internal problems and it is very easy for those looking from the outside in to make assesments without evening understanding the country's make itself: Hence the same mistake that Bush made in invading Iraq.

        • Posted By: basava raju @ 10/22/2007 11:13:28 AM

You have explained nothing regarding bening Islamist control of Pakistan. All you did is comment something about Hindus worshipping animals which is true. Large tracts of Pakistan is still controlled by feudal landlords and there were no land reforms to provide for the poor. All Indians on the other hand own small land holdings. Poverty in India will reduce with reforms that improve infrastructure(sea ports, roads, airports, agrarian, health and education services) which will happen in the next 10 to 15 years or and you will see the difference. India is already a known services hub and manufacturing sector is improving. But i don't know why you discuss about Indian poverty in this article which has to do with Pakistan being the most dangerous nation that many seem to agree.

          • Posted By: saeed2 @ 10/22/2007 11:29:44 AM

Obviously you are a true cow worshipping hindu and i'm sorry that i attacked your monkey lords. Please accept my apologies. On your comments I guess you are bringing 85% of Indians that live below to poverty to the poverty level and in only 15 years, wow. If you read my words you will see that i did state that India is improving, for the rich, and i don't deny it, but obviously you don't see it. Pakistan in the eyes of an Indian has always been a dangerous nation and it will continue to be. Indian farmers may owe the land, but, their are also still large farm owners and most of them are in government, the same parliment that has over 35% of its representatives with criminal cases against it. The "largest democracy" in the world doesn't even let 15%+ of its citizens vote and disqulifies them using various methods and the vast majority of villages are forced to vote as they are told. Do a search on India times for 2006 and read the article yourself. And had you read my entire writing you would have seen that I said that it is easy to sit and attack a nation from the outside without having all the understandings of the inside of the nation, as you and others are doing here, and i am doing to India.

Your posts would make some sense if it were written rationally rather than emotionally.

            • Posted By: basava raju @ 10/22/2007 11:51:15 AM

Your opinions ofcourse are highly distorted and biases. The 15% you talk of have voted more in percentage in each election than rest of 85%.

          • Posted By: basava raju @ 10/22/2007 11:15:27 AM

You have explained nothing regarding benign Islamist control of Pakistan.

  • Posted By: maabedin @ 10/22/2007 11:39:21 AM

A single article caused so much contention...:S.

I'm a Pakistani living in Pakistan since birth. Let me say this, the text is bitter but true; it's a harsh reality, the eyes can see, the ears can hear is provoked by Newsweek. Media is playing an obscure role these days; as per my perception either it should remain neutral when conveying information like this one or it should also investigate the reasons behind the problems. The article spread essence of hatred from Pakistan, declares her a place of all evils but couldn't tries to figure out the causes of all these odds.

Further, I went through the comments of some of my Pakistani brothers about India. Brothers...I was also among the ones who really consider India as our enemy and hate the Indian existance as well but truly speaking the reality is quite different. India has enjoyed the same amount of time after freedom as we did but they are far far better then us now. Don't just consider the strength of our military as our power and a way to stand eye2eye with India, weapons of destruction are never truly be the power of any nation. If you really wont to see, check out there competency in IT industry, check out there strength in sports, watch the progress of their media and film industry, learn about their education system, not a single Pakistani university lie in top3000 rankings of the world universities but some of the Indian universities were enjoying very honourable positions; these are just a few examples, please be realistic and don't just put aggressive comments just because you hate them.

governments that will be our own downfall , whether it be in American lives here at home or our economy that will simply crumble under the burden . Why cant we see that American will can not change what has been for thousands of years a region of strife and militancy where the struggle for power and control has nothing to do with freedom. The people there do not want freedom. If they did they have the means to obtain it by simply eradicating the problem. It is about idealism and there will never be peace in that region as long as there are Christians , Jews and Islam in the same place. We need to pull our resources , money and troops out of the area and let them finish what will inevitably take place. Isolationism is only scary to those in our country who gain financially from our trade deficit and line their pockets at our expense. That includes trade with our enemies and selling of technology to the same people we will go to war with one day. Surely we are not so naive as to think the socialist and marxist countries , which are making a new revival , around the world want to be our friends. Im tired of hearing how we are the "only" superpower in the world and that makes us the policemen of the world. Do you really think that we could could go to war with China , or Russia , India or Pakistan and WIN? WE have stretched our troop strengths beyond the defensible , we have decommissioned our navy to the point that China has us outnumbered in warships ( nuclear I might add) about 10 to 1 and with a technology that has enable them to put men in space so dont give me that rubbish about our leading the technology war. We sell them everything we have in order to keep them as "friends". Everyone should look closely at the next election. If there is a single person that is running that is an incumbent , vote for the other guy!! no matter who it is. It stime we changed the "core" of this country and let the people have it back. Not the professional , career politicians. They have screwed it up enough.

      Jim,
Through history many nations have come to the top and ruled but ALL have failed eventually for the same reasons and sadly, very sadly, America may be on the same path.

I have a comment on the comment that suggests to attack Pakistan. I honestly do not believe that killing terrorists and civilians at the same time will reduce the number of terrorists. Why should the whole country be punished, why should children die and young people be amputated or be deprived of their rights to education, to health, to life. There is a much complex, much deep rooted problem that needs to be adressed and each one of us is in someway liable to what is happening right now around the world. The problem start from the way we greet our muslim neighbour or the way we look at people talking in some Arabic language in our workplace. Pakistanis do not leave only in Pakistan, just like muslims do not leave only in muslim countries. Let us stop creating ennemies around us, let us not show hatred to the ones around us .No muslim approves the destruction of another muslim country whether the latter is for or against terrorism. Let us save our children, the next generation, from total destruction. What is our world going to be like in 10 or 20 years. What values are we teaching our children as responsible parents or member of the society? War has never met its goals but discussions and negotiations have. What good did the World War II brought? Let us preach peace and harmony everywhere. Let us all respect one another without discrimination to each other's race, religion or moral values and maybe we can save the world from the worst.

Definitely, Pakistan is the most dangerous country in the world. Look at the evidence. It has invaded two countries in the past few years (or is that somewhere else), it has been sponsoring genocide in Palestine for nigh on 60 years (or is that somewhere else), it sponsored the invasion of Somalia (or was that somewhere else), it has refused to sign the Kyoto Accord and it loves polluting the environment so much that it is threatening to invade Iran to prevent it from acquiring non-greenhouse gas producing nuclear power (or is that somewhere else), it has secret prisons all over the world where just about anyone from just about anywhere can land up with no hope of trial or freedom (or is that somewhere else) and on a more domestic note, it has health care for only the rich and its students regularly get shot up at school (or is that somewhere else)

Starting January 01, 2007, there will not be a single terror attack on any western interest anywhere in the world. instead it will be muslims attacking the muslims themselves...wait and see for yourself....as time goes by...these terrorists will not be able to bomb any western location or any western oversees interest.........the clock is ticking.the reason for all this is that i have discovered that there is a single point on the earth which governs the earth, including all the powers in the world.and i have made a wall which stops the rays of the world power to mix with the symbol of death, which has been proliferating the world since the last 25 years.this also proves that the point on the earth is the place which actually controls the fate of the power and destiny of the superpower in the whole world. It has been finally proven that the Arabs are the real anti_christ and they will remain to be for the next 10,000 years. this secret point is about two stories high and was the single most reason for the Anglo Saxon supremacy in the world starting 1850's uptill now.
