I've spent my life living between both the US and Pakistan, and believe me, Pakistan is a hell of lot more dangerous.
why is pakistan always targetted with ignorant comments like this? The truth is that this is all a politicl game which is being run by America. The Americans have brought this mess upon themselves, once apon a time it was America that was funding such activities. So then how can you suddenly label Pakistan as the most dangerous country. In reality America is the most dangerous country as she is playing mind games with everyone. If the author has a right to call Pakistan dangerous, I have the right to call America dangerous!
I think the author of this article is ignorant about the history or may be shy to disclose the actual facts. I have to refresh your memory of old days when the cold war was on and Genral Ziya ul Haq had taken over the government throughing Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto???s government in 1979. Pakistan was one of most secular states at that time but had a u turn right after the marshal law enforced by Genral Zia. Let me revile the truth that Genral Zia was sponsored by Americans at that time to use him against Russia. American government supported and funded Pakistan in general and Pakistan Millitary in particular to create the radical Islamist groups to fight against Russians at Afghan border. Let me ask you one question, who created the torabora caves in Afghanistan? Who was sponsoring Osama Bin Laden against Russia. Now when the American strategy fired back, they are finding excuses to get away with all the evil politics they were playing around the world. Secondly, Pakistan being home for militants or Al Quida, I want to say that how I can believe that Osama Bind Laden is not having a good time with G. W. Bush somewhere in the white house and having a tough time trying to hide between the borders in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I conclude that what ever happening in Pakistan at the moment is a political game.

It's not amusing that so many have died because it has taken this long.
I am amused it has taken the Americans so long to finally figure this out.

I appreciate your comments sir, but this magazine has a history of taking the anti-American viewpoint, so I'm thinking that there's a lot of honesty in this article.
For different perspective visit http://pakcentric.blogspot.com.
This is a typical article I would expect from some authors at this point in time. I am not a real Pakistani because I do not represent the 70 percent of poor Pakistanis who actually do not care about who comes in power. Rather they care about having their meal two times a day. Please Mr. Zahid Hussain stop being anti-Pakistani or Anti- real Pakistani. For my view visit http://pakcentric.blogspot.com to find out more.
This article is just a pro-American view. Actually, there is a difference between Al Qaeda and Talibans. I am not supporting any. But due to American actions now they both have become one. Taliban were for the Afghanis not for Pakistan. But, thanks to Mr. Bush all people who pray five-times a day or recite the Quran are thought to be as terrorists. I agree with the Author - Jihad certainly has found a safe haven in Pakistan. In addition, poverty, illiteracy and religion is the dangerous cocktail, which will fuel it further. People void of visionary leadership will be made scapegoats, by the self centered peddlers of God. Add to that assault rifles available in street corners or being manufactured with impunity at Dera.
Unfortunately, the middle class ( usually well educated and moderate ) people in all countries shrug off their political responsibilities, whether it is USA or Pakistan. Which in effect allows people appealing to the common lowest denominator to call the shots.
Religion, the biggest weakness on MAN, has always been used by leaders to meet their ends. And the same thing is happening in USA and Pakistan / Iran / Iraq/Afghanistan. In the name of God, both these groups are following Satan. As one who do not belong to any one of the Semitic religion, see that SATAN is being worshipped in the guise of God. SATAN has won!
Muslims, who identified themselves with the nation of birth only a few decade back are turning pan- Islamist. Moderates are being sidelines by the Hawks. And each actions from either side is creating hard-liners in both the camps. USA have to understand that it can not run the world and has to accept it's key role in creating Pan-Islamism. And every, Cowboy-ish action or statements it makes, add more fuel to the Jihadist fire. However, it has the biggest responsibility to dough the fire that it started.
Today, Pakistan is a dangerous place and I agree with the author, it had all the right mix, that Al Queda required to further its objectives. The world needs to acknowledge the ground realities in Pakistan and needs to eliminate the threats. The current / future government of Pakistan needs to eliminate foreign Islamic fighters and secure it's borders. Withdraw weapons from it citizenry, enforce strict arms control. Spend huge money on modern education and employment and take steps to ensure all inclusive economic and social growth.
The Jihadis were created over generations of stupid cold-world policies. They were milked by USA and Pakistani Establishment to further their national interests and NOW the Jihadis have come back to roost.

Bang on the dot analysis, but with an omission. The ISI created the monster called Jihadists at the behest of the US and the CIA. It is only fair that while Musharraf is required to do more to stem the threat, the US too should do more in terms creating enabling environment for democracy, for treating the average Pakistani with more respect, for instance. You have to invest in the hearts of the people before you start expecting them to serve your cause. The threat posed to Pakistan by Jihadists is far greater and more tangible than the threat posed by them to western interests. Unless Pakistanis understand that, their leaders will continue to debate if they are only fighting a proxy war at the behest of the US. The truth is that Washington does not have a Pakistan policy; it only has a Musharraf policy which is very shortsighted. Thus, what happens after Musharraf is anyone's guess. The West should help Pakistan by sharing the benefits of modernity, education, healthcare, knowledge and then expect it to do more to help itself and the world against the rising, killing tide of Jihadist threat.
Thanks for a well researched, in-depth article. In India, we have long gotten used to the West ignoring what we have always known. That all terrorist roads eventually lead to Pakistan. Time and again, especially after 9/11, we have been amazed that, instead of targeting Pakistan and cleansing it, the West chose to ally with it. We have been suffering the consequences of militant Islam for too long. India and Pakistan were born out of the same mother. Today one is a prosperous, liberal democracy while the other is a radicalised failed state. The difference? Islam.
