For all the independents. I would not worry about Huckabee's beliefs on abortion or gay marriage when considering to vote for him. He will not get a federal marriage amendment, period. If Bush and the Republicans failed to get it through when they were in control of the presidency and congress, then what makes you think Huckabee will get it through with a Democratic controlled congress? And as far as gay marriage and gay rights. Please! Bill Clinton did more against gay rights than Bush has to this date, i.e. Defense of Marriage Act and the Don't Ask Don't Tell agreement. To this day I can not think of a single thing Bush has signed that has put up road bocks for gay rights. I'm not trying to say that Bush supports gays and Clinton does not, what I am saying is one of them actually signed a document that holds back rights. Huckabee actually sounds like a Democrat when you hear him discuss education, energy independence, health care, and the environment. His solutions for the problems are not left leaning, but he actually sounds like a democrat on the issues because he seems to care. I will never say Democrats do not care about these issues, I just think their big government solutions actually make the problems worse. Huckabee will be the perfect communicator to explain conservative policy that on the surface seem like Republicans do not care. We need a great communicator to break through the demagogy of the Democrats. If we nominate Giuliani all we???ll get is Bush on steroids and endless fighting between parties. I hope we do not end up with a Clinton or Giuliani presidencie. If we do we can expect more of the split in the country.

I need more than rumors and gossipping allegations to stop supporting Huckabee, like links to reputable, unbiased news sources.
I need no further research to inform me about Ron Paul. He has done that himself in the debates with his desperate ranting and libertarian lack of opposition to, i.e. support for, legalized drugs, prostitution, and pornography.

No thank you - No more people who are "born again", true believers, talking to god, not Christian not Muslim not Mormon - just please somebody with an IQ higher than their age.

I think you have a point, Huckabee is a preacher of the aboriginal Christian stripe that is likely to be supported by the Flat-earthers in the Republican party. But they have done the same thing they did during the Goldwater days, they have moved WAAAAAYYYYY to far right. When this chumps are falling over themselves in a debate, saying they don't believe in evolution because they don't want to insult the moron "Christian" element in their party, it just shows what a real mess the Republican party is in. What is next, banninng the Bikini because of its role in the decline of American society?

I really appreciate Governor Huckabee for his character, experience, principles, sincerity, and common sense. An apparently overlooked point would be his ability to successfully campaign against Senator Clinton. Governor Huckabee has publicly stated that other candidates are underestimating her. Remember, he nearly followed her husband's administration in Arkansas and knows her better than many. There are already Independents and Democrats supporting and contributing to his campaign. He really could unite this country. I hope he is our next president. All honest Americans would benefit, and not at the expense of anyone.

Wow, very good and objective analysis. I agree. Huckabee is the man, I only hope that enough ordinary Republicans recognize this over the coming months regardless of what party leaders have to say. It's time we the people stand up and retake control from the politicians and special interest groups and nominate a leader who is more like one of us and not like the elites.

Our family is writing this up to tell of what happened to us on the value voters debate. We are very frustrated given my disabled wife was not allowed to vote and had no other way to be represented!

FRC action leadership sits on knowledge of false results from its "value voters debate poll" due to online vote blocking
    *********************************************************
The FRC action committee is sitting on the knowledge from phone calls they had Friday and Monday to their offices that their online poll was blocking
voters from voting. For christians and value voters that could not attend their DC meetings, many of their votes were blocked putting into question the results from this meeting. These people who maybe too busy,elderly/disabled, or to poor to attend the DC meeting appear to have have
been disenfranchised. Voters calling on Friday and Monday notified the FRC action group that there votes were denied when they tried to vote online. FRC action representatives seemed genuine in saying they realize that this
happened and that there was a skeleton crew managing the office. It truly was an accident they wanted the public to know. But they dont understand why as of yet this happened but have notified their leadership of the problem.

With the christian base split geographically across the country the longer this brews the worse of a problem it could be.

With so much distrust by the public on polls, electioneering even by the media to get a certain groups "right" candidate into washington, this is not sitting well with the groups who already say as conservatives they feel betrayed.

The question is how long will the FRC and Tony Perkins sit on these facts?

What benefit does it have to not immediately notify the public that a revote is needed.

Is the FRC gaining something or their leadership by letting these false advertising results stay in the media for a while?

It is well known that Romney has strong problems because of his mormon faith with the base. Huckabee is hated and distrusted by value voters who faught day and night for what they viewed as supported overthrow of our
nation and values under the guise of the McCain/Kennedy/Bush illegal immigration and amnesty bills passage. Huckabee at the time was a STRONG
supporter of the bill and has been back tracking ever since the public outcry. He was an even stronger fighter for the Kennedy/Bush/Mccain immigration creed in Arkansas. He faught against laws oh so willing with that Huckabee tongue of his he slandered other christian representatives to win his arguements, for a christian stepping across the boundry of calling them racists seemed very bizarre. Mr. Huckabee supported his biggest campaign sponsor tyson foods ceo and the hispanic lobbist groups and mexico foothold in arkansas with the famous 1 dollar a month rental that normally costs 5000 dollars. He is known to try whatever opportunistic tacticts he feels will get him to his goals, saying some of the most hurtfull things o

The country needs leadership that will not bring shame, disgrace and scandal after scandal. Mike's background and moral standards are what will steer this country toward the liberty and freedom that made this nation the envy of the world. His genuine support for the 2nd Amendment is true evidence of this. In a world of governments, that want to oppress their people with religious intolerance and secularism, gun bans, and high taxes. Mike Huckabee really stands for the values that many of us cherish and will even lay down our lives for. Some of the politicans craft ways to take our freedoms, but then there are some want to increase the freedom. 2008 election is a crucial moment in history that could severely alter freedom for Christians, gun-owners, and the working taxpayers. To conserve American values and traditions Mike Huckabee is the best choice there is.

Ron Paul will not save this country. Ron Paul would allow the islamofascists to overrun our country and our way of life. I like most of Ron Paul's positions, except his position on national security. I want my children and grandchildren to grow up in a free America. Huckabee has my vote!

Wonderful article, Mr. Alter! Mike Huckabee is amazing -- he's so honest and likeable. He will get my vote and I plan to campaign for him. Please, anyone who does not know about him, check out his website : MikeHuckabee.com or his videos on YouTube.

I assume that bacchusPlateau would consider Hillary a "centrist"! I don't thnk so.

  • Posted By: ThAllen @ 10/22/2007 2:36:34 PM

A Baptist preacher for President? Why not just go the whole distance and elect an Ayatollah. This sect teaches the same kind of anti-gay, anti-woman rhetoric as the "Islamofascists." They just don't blow themselves up with the same sort of regularity. We don't need this type of extremism in the White House.

    • Posted By: bacchusPlateau @ 10/23/2007 10:40:15 AM

Amen, brother! We see the results of faith-based economics and programs around the country. Absolute failures. We need centrist candidates from both parties, not extremes like Huckabee. He's a religious zealot. I wonder if God will tell him to invade Iran the second he gets sworn in.

Best article I've read on the election, and I'm a political junkie. Even the conservative media, as evidenced by the Fox News debate, refuse to allow Mike the title of "top tier"although he is clearly there when voters are consulted. They chose speakers for four others to be interviewed in the predebate commentary, but nobody spoke for the Huck. It was 30 minutes into the debate before he was asked a questions. Come on conservative voters--lets decide for ourselves who is "top tier". For the first time in my 40 years of voting, I made a donation to a candidate for president, and plan to give more. I think i'll be the one to decide who I like--not Fox or the liberal press.

Great article, Newsweek! One beauty of the Huck swell is that it has an "in your face" quality about it. I'm disgusted with the Democrats, but disillusioned with the GOP. But I'm energized by Huckabee because he shares our pain and articulates our frustrations. More importantly, pulling for him is a way to remind the GOP that big pockets don't always, or at least shouldn't, determine elections. PEOPLE should. It's like having our cake and eating it too; if he wins, Republicans like me get to hand a defeat to the Republican establishment which eschews Huck and his refusal to bow down to them, and at the same time we get a candidate who we (and non Republicans) love and WILL go vote for. The other alternatives simply aren't enough to inspire.
