Great article, Newsweek! One beauty of the Huck swell is that it has an "in your face" quality about it. I'm disgusted with the Democrats, but disillusioned with the GOP. But I'm energized by Huckabee because he shares our pain and articulates our frustrations. More importantly, pulling for him is a way to remind the GOP that big pockets don't always, or at least shouldn't, determine elections. PEOPLE should. It's like having our cake and eating it too; if he wins, Republicans like me get to hand a defeat to the Republican establishment which eschews Huck and his refusal to bow down to them, and at the same time we get a candidate who we (and non Republicans) love and WILL go vote for. The other alternatives simply aren't enough to inspire.

Excellent analysis Jonathan!! Mike Huckabee would run rings around Hillary in a debate. Hillary can sound mighty domineering and controlling...whereas Mike Huckabee with his easy going disarming manner would woo especially southern democrats (just like Reagan did). Reagan had a way of sticking to his principles, but pitching his cause in such a way that you just couldn't argue with him....he had the democratic congress eating out of his hand especially in his 1st term.....I see these same qualities in Mike Huckabee. Mikes a WINNER and he's a "common man" unlike the millionaires (Romney, Guilliani). America is tired of blue-blood royalty (ala BUSH) who are controlled by Wall Street....too much jobs outsourcing has gotten John Q Public pretty upset and I don't think Americans want any more CORPORATION CONTROLLED PRESIDENTS.

Yes, Governor Huckabee is the best bet. Some democrats will certainly vote for him on his values alone. I just don't see democrats voting for any of the other republican candidates. Everything Mike Huckabee's been able to do in his campaign so far has been due to main street, bi-partisan Americans - not corporate and media America. Let's get someone real in that office!

Wonderful article, one which captures a multifaceted nationwide awakening to the least-"candidate-ish" candidate in the mix. The fact that Republican leaders and supporters en masse have not yet volunteered their support of Huckabee's candidacy, speaks of a greater tragedy in American politics than the one threatened by the GOP should Hillary '08 take the vote. When money and croneyism rule the day over experience, results, and (*gasp*) integrity, the Republican Party, and the entire Electorate, have already lost.

My looming fear is that history will remember this political organization for the cowardice it has exhibited to this point in this campaign; my hope, however, is that America will do what America does best, and let good, decent people help each other out. Huckabee '08 seems to fit that bill pretty well, and I think the American people are figuring it out . That is, the ones who really matter at the polls...

Ron Paul would be my first choice...But is he electable after being painted as a kook by the liberal media? If the Republican candidate is Giuliani, Romney, or McCain, I will stay home because none of them are any better than Hillary. I do think that Huckabee is electable and certainly has the oratory skills necessary to make her look like the fool she is. A 90% conservative-constitutionalist is better than the rest.

The Neo-Cons are dying to convince you of any reason Not to vote for Ron Paul, whose campaign has gained massive momentum thanks to independent thinking Americans who inherently trust glossy magazine reporters even less than they trust politicians. All you have to do is YouTUBE Dr. Paul, and you'll see for yourself that he is not only as Conservative as Mike Huckabee, who is a likable person in some regards, but Ron Paul has a grasp on issues of Economics and Liberty that rival those of Alan Greenspan and Thomas Jefferson. He is just for real, and that is the truth.

Mike Huckabee will never carry any Metropolitan states. And, despite his fine character, he does not have the National or International Savvy or Gravitas that our country needs. What he should do is try to lead the Social Conservative Caucus.

    Thanks.

I will be voting for Ron Paul!

He is the only true conservative who still believes in the Constitution with a 20 year voting record to prove it.

Ron has never voted to raise taxes.
Ron has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
Ron has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
Ron has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
Ron has never voted to raise congressional pay.
Ron has never taken a government-paid junket.

Ron votes against regulating the Internet.
Ron voted against NAFTA and CAFTA.
    Ron voted against United Nations.
Ron votes against the welfare state.

Ron votes to preserve the Constitution.
Ron votes to cut government spending.
Ron votes to lower healthcare costs.
Ron votes to secure our borders with real immigration reform.

Ron voted to track down al-qaeda terrorists and introduced legislation that would likely have captured Osama bin laden. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig8/fisk5.html

Ronald Reagan said that ???Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first.???

70% of Americans are against the war in Iraq. Ron Paul is the only Republican who voted against the Iraq war from the start. Iraq is the number one issue to voters thus Ron Paul has the best voting record to win. He is already pulling voters away from Hillary. Ron Paul is the only Republican who has any shot in the general election.

Interestingly, Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel and veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!

Find out why Ron Paul has over 51,000 registered volunteers. More than all other candidates combined.

Until I heard Mike Huckabee speak, I've never been anything less than annoyed and repulsed by political campaigning. Huckabee seems absolutely sincere, intelligent, and full of common sense - not at all the typical Plastic Political Doll. He has great ideas and proved he can get things done as governor of Arkansas. There's never going to be a perfect candidate, but Huckabee seems to be close to it for me. I cannot understand why he's not gotten more support and notice from the GOP Powers That Be. He practically has a flashing neon sign on his forehead that says "I'm Your Candidate!". Almost everyone I've talked to who has seen him on tv has been very impressed with him. I think his grass-roots support is going to continue to swell.

    • Posted By: RonPaulSaveUs @ 10/23/2007 12:14:54 AM

There's a little more to the story: Mike Huckabee increased state spending 65.3 percent from 1996 to 2004. During his tenure, the number of state government workers in Arkansas increased over 20 percent, and the state???s general obligation debt increased by approx. $1 billion. And that's AFTER Bill Clinton was governor! How can you increase spending AFTER a tax and spend Democrat bloated the Arkansas state government to astronomical proportions?

      And that's not all:

Huckabee signed a gas tax hike in 1999
He called for a state sales tax hike in 2002
He signed a 25-cent cigarette tax hike in 2003
He publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002
He increased state spending 65.3% from 1996 to 2004
He allowed a major tax hike package to pass in 2004
He received a "D" grade on fiscal issues from the Cato Institute in 2004
      He raised the minimum wage
He favored amnesty for illegal aliens back in 2001, and as recently as 2006
He called No Child Left Behind the greatest education reform effort by the federal government "in my lifetime."

Most frightening to me is the fact he supports the continued operation of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, saying its prisoners are treated well and it is better to make mistakes there than risk the safety of American citizens. The people there have not been given any legal rights, other than basic humanitarian aid. Basically, if the administration deems you to be anti-American, or a 'risk', they can lock you up indefinitely. This is the most dangerous precedent you can set. It attacks free speech, and denies the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the core reasons this country was founded in the first place! Who's to say what kind of people Huckabee might find offensive enough to categorize as a 'risk'?

Huckabee is a liberal who used to be a preacher. That's all. He talks the talk of a good ole' boy, country conservative when the cameras are on him, but his record shows the high-contrast liberal streak running up his back.

Huckabee has a folksy manner but he's still a vocal proponent of Iraq and Bush's foreign policy. The Republican you conspicuously left out, Ron Paul, is the only one in line with the general electorate on the war, and the only Republican who can take the fight to Hillary's turf on the war, civil liberties, corruption, and controlling spending. Plus, Ron Paul will actually have the money to capitalize on a strong early primary showing.

    • Posted By: ne1home @ 10/22/2007 9:40:16 PM

Ron Paul's argument against the war has merit, but his solution is wrong. We need to clean up the mess we made first, then leave. To think that if we leave tomorrow that everything will be OK in the Middle East is nothing short of lunacy. No one wants to be in Iraq one minute longer than necessary, but there is a right and honorable way to leave; and it's not the way we did in Vietnam.

      • Posted By: RonPaulSaveUs @ 10/23/2007 12:12:59 AM

The same propaganda was used in Vietnam. The sooner we get out the better. Yes, we made a mess but we don't deserve to have more of our people dying. The sooner we get out, the sooner they cn fix their own country. The arab leaders of the world need to step up and help.

At first I was all for Ron Paul but then after watching Mike Huckabee on the Glenn Beck show I did a 180 turn. Mike is very articulate (something we haven't had in a long time), is a straight shooter (what other canidate is willing to freely say that the 2nd admendment is about protection from the government not for hunting?). Mike Huckabee has my vote 100%.

  • Posted By: pedro305 @ 10/22/2007 6:12:20 PM

Being a governor for over 10 years makes Huckabee the most qualified to lead this nation. He cares more about people than his party. It's not something I'm seeing in the other candidates. The more people hear about him, the more he goes up in the polls. He was virtually unheard of before Iowa's straw poll back in August and in two months has climbed up to 8% in the polls nationwide and he's at 18% in Iowa. With Rudy at 24% nationwide, this race is far from over. I have to agree with the author: there is a case for Mike. He's by far the best candidate to face Hillary one-on-one. Coming from the same state as the Clintons gives him an advantage that the other GOP hopefuls lack. Huck is a consistent and authentic conservative and that means a lot especially in the general election where flip-floppers and semi-conservatives have never come out on top.

pedro305 Huckabee seems a likeable guy but you must do further research. The writer of this article sums up a big fear of mine for Huckabee "The rap on Huckabee is that while he can speak fluently on global affairs, he has no foreign-policy chops."

Hmm, the least skills in foreign policy. Well that should scare the heck out of anyone regarding our screwed up foreign policy situation. We need an expert more than ever. I encourage you to do your due diligence and read some of Ron's speeches on Foreign Policy. You will be quite amazed at his insight.

OK WhatsNotToLike, I'll tell you one of many things I don't like. I checked out Mike's website and found this quote on his issues page "Iraq is a battle in our generational, ideological war on terror". What a bunch of crap. Even Alan Greenspan admitted it all about oil. You need to wake up and do your research. We are at a serious crossroads in America. Start here:
