Why does the religious right refer to themselves as "values voters"? This is so silly to me. 100% of voters in the country vote their values. When liberals chose a prochoic candidate they do so because they value a woman's right to choose and to govern her own body and they don't consider a 4 week old fetus a human being. When they vote for a candidate that supports gay marriage they do so because they value freedom and equality and recognize that the union of a same sex couple does not mean they love their spouse any less. These are values just as much as any other. So it perplexes me when the religious right proclaims to be value voters as if they are the only people in this country with values. It's completely ridiculous!

What happened to seperation of Church and State? I thought that was the founding principles of America and the Constitution? Course they are trying to change that to their liking as they did with the old testiment and then the new testiment and of course the King James version. This would not work as there are too many Christians that dont take the hard line that the puritans to the right have taken in recent years.

The thought of the United States moving from a secular government to a theocracy is horrifying. Jesus realized this--"give to Caesar what is Caesar's"--and so did amazingly wise founders of our country in the very first amendment to the Consitution. Religion has no place in govnerment, and whenever governments align themselves with religions, bad things always happen. The temptation to corruption and the abuse of power it just too great--even for well-intentioned, genuinely religious people. The best thing for Christianity (and for all religious practice) is to maintain a secular government that does not interfere with, administer, or attempt to align the government with any particular religion.

If we are to leave the government alone, then why don't leave us alone and let us pray in schools and teach creationism ?

      • Posted By: Auslander @ 10/23/2007 1:47:11 PM

I don't think that the government is stopping anyone from praying or teaching creationism. We are all free to teach our kids these things. It is the governement (through its public schools) that may not do either.

      • Posted By: Just my 2 cents @ 10/23/2007 1:45:42 PM

Yeah! Lets teach Creationism only in schools so that we could raise stupid childrens into adults who believe in fairy tales, Santa, the Easter Bunny, Prince Charming, and we could pray to the creator of Scienetology.

      • Posted By: colvinatch @ 10/23/2007 1:43:32 PM

Because the public schools belong to the public, not one religion or faith. If you want to pray in school go to a private religious one, that's why I teach in one.

      • Posted By: NoRedPlease @ 10/23/2007 1:41:48 PM

Are you being serious? BECAUSE PRAYING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND TEACHING CREATIONISM IS THE DEFINITION OF MIXING CHURCH AND STATE! That's why they won't "leave you alone". If you want to teach religion as science do you in private religious schools but not in public schools. What you suggested is exactly whate Auslander warned agasint in his comments!

When are we going to seperate Church from State as the original intent of the United States Government and Constitution. The Christian Right does not stand a chance with their own party. There are lots of Christians that dont practice the hate that the Right does.

One percent of the population holding plus 90% of the wealth. This is a joke. These so called evangelicals is nothing more than a group whose god is green. David had his 'Mighty Men' and so does the USA. However, ours are not glorified but crusified. A lot of these tv and radio program are about lining people poclets. Willie Means-bilbi2shire@yahoo.com

Its funny how when we hit a cord with the fanatical right, they always resort to name calling and trying to impugn the character and intelligence of those who disagree. If they could only come up with a time in the history of the world when a religious based government worked then I would listen! Keep calling us names, you just make our case for us!

After reading this very interview, I, an American Indian, strongly feel that the Christians are not really abiding the 10 Commandments. Plus, are they really speaking for God? Was God sitting in Heaven saying to himself, "Hey, America is in chaos, maybe I should have my Army of Christian fundalmentalists do my bidding."

    I don't think so because;
    1. The Christians should remember that God loves all (no matter who they are).
    2. God didn't put us on earth to Judge others (Read the the Book of Matthews: Judging others).
    3. Sounds like that the Christians (right-wing) wants a utopian nation (aint gonna happen).

I might as well start a third party and call it "More freedom for all Americans" Party.

Christian radicals brought Bush to power twice - doesn't that tell us enough? This sort of dogma is what is ruining the world - the bible is a collection of stories written by PEOPLE not GOD - get some perspective. Divide church and state once and for all - religion is private, let's keep it that way.

  • Posted By: rayball@adelphia.net @ 10/23/2007 1:39:20 PM

First the fundamentalist Muslims attack the World Trade Center; then the fundamentalist Christians attack Iraq and sacrifice our loved ones on the altar of their god, saying all the time - God Bless America. If this doesn't show the danger of letting fundamentalists co opt our government, I don't know how much more proof we need. The world will be a safer and saner place without religious fundamentalists in control of the weapons they are so eager to use to make everyone conform to their deluded way of thinking.

SO CAUASE I STATED WHAT THE OLD BIBLE TELLS US AS TO WOMEN, IS NOT BIGITORY, ITS WRITTEN!! GET A LIFE. I BELIEVE ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS!! NOT JUST YOURS, OR MINE. NOW IF YOU WANT TO CALL ME A BIGOT CAUSE I SAID IF THEY WISH TO BE IN POLITICS THAT THEY SHOULD PAY TAXES! THEN TO BAD. WE PAY TO PLAY, YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT, YOU TO MUST PAY TO PLAY, AND YOU [THE CHURCH] PAYS NOTHING, AND SAYS EVERYTHING! EITHER JOIN THE TAX PAYING POLITICIANS, OR STOP GETTING POLITICAL, BEYOND SELF, THEN VOTE LIKE I HAVE TO! I'M NOT A PARTY EITHER!!! IT'S THE BIBLE WHICH STATES WOMEN ARE SUBSERVANT TO MAN! THE CONSTITUTION SAYS WOMAN HAVE RIGHTS! SO WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT,NOT GOD BUT MAN!! DEAL WITH TRUTH AND YOU HELP PAY FOR CHILDRENS HEALTHCARE INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ITS NOT GETTING DONE!

    • Posted By: tanana12000 @ 10/23/2007 1:37:22 PM

Read your Bible again - it does not say women are subservant to man - it says Christ is the head of the husban, and the husband is the head of the wife. It also says the husband's body is not his own, it's his wife's, and the wife's body is not her own, but her husband's. It also says for Christian to be submissive to each other, so there really isn't any inequality.

History has shown repeatedly that a third-party candidate has never won a presidential election. This response shows that these Christian activists need to take a history lesson.

Do these leaders of the Christian Right really have any idea as to the meaning of Christianity? They are out to promote a faith based Government that will legislate morality, kind of like the Government???s based in the Middle East. Who will be the Grand Inquisitor of the faithful that will preside and judge over those who sin? Which religion will be practiced, will it be Catholicism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hindu, or Buddhism and will there be trials for those who don???t practice the chosen religion, will these individuals be found guilty of heresy and tortured or put to death??? World history has shown what happens when a faith based Government comes to power and how this power corrupts. We have witnessed in the Middle East how a faith based government controls the media and lives of the people how their civil liberties and religious freedoms have been replaced with religious persecution. Our history is full of the carnage that man wages against man by the leaders in the name of religion that one will find glory in the destruction of a people of a different faith.

So who are these leaders of the Religious Right that they would cast aside religious freedom for all for a one faith Government? Will they practice religious tolitarianism whereby the government controls all aspects of our lives or will they show compassion and tolerance? They, so far, have shown no compassion and tolerance and they have promoted their own agenda. They fought so hard to keep a brain dead woman alive and yet they show no compassion to the children of this country who have no health care. They show no tolerance to the gay community and feel and say that these individuals are an aberration and should be shown no humanity and yet members of their own faith based community have been caught indulging in this practice. They are the Pharisees who seek control and power for their own self serving gratification and in no way have shown any of the Christian principles that we are to live by like aiding the poor, caring for the sick, fighting injustice and seeking peace over war.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely and if we give these so called faith based individuals that kind of power then all that this country stands for, the freedom that we hold dear to us, the sacrifices of all those who died to preserve our nation will have been in vain. This is not a fight against religion or faith but a fight against individuals who seek their own ambition and glorification over the faith that they had chosen to represent. If these people had true faith, then they would believe in the free will that God had granted all mankind.

The US fights Islamists, but seems willing to court Christianists. Why is one religion's extremists okay while the other is not? Christian "activists" in this country have no place in meddling with politics; the result can only be bad for everyone, both Christian and non-Christian alike.

JUST A SOLD POINT? THE RELIGIOUS LEFT HAS BEEN IN POLITICS AS OF WHEN THE GOP THROUGH THE CHURCH, TELEVISION STYLE, STATED"THE DEMS ARE FIGHTING THE JUDGES CAUSE OF RELIGION" ON TV 4YRS AGO-AND HAVE YET TO PAY A DIME IN TAXES-LET THE CHURCH SUPPORT THE CHILDRENS HEALTHCARE BILL!!! GET TOTAL FUNDING FROM THE CHURCH,,PAY TO PLAY LIKE THE RST OF US!!!

    • Posted By: Mr. 101 @ 10/23/2007 11:33:08 AM

Hey, wait! You forgot the separation of church and state mantra! The reason the church is not taxed is so it is not controlled by the state. Do you want your separation or not?

SCHIP is a total misrepresentation in the media. Do you want to be taxed to pay for the healthcare of families making more than $50,000 per year? All the people that have been brought out in the sob stories are already covered by existing legislation. It's not about the "poor little kids", it's about having a government nanny, who provides all of our needs. They have places like that if you like it (Cuba, for example). I know that my congregation is doing a lot more good with its money than the government will ever do.

      • Posted By: sjfountain @ 10/23/2007 12:48:11 PM

Are you paying for your own health insurance and that of your family, or are you getting it from somewhere else. Cause, see, $50,000 doesn't go very far these days, particularly if you have kids. And have you priced health insurance lately??? Would it fit easily into your budget?? It is about the kids. It's all about the kids. And if your congregation is doing a lot more good with its money than the government will ever do, can I have some to pay my health insurance for my kids and me??
