IT MAY AS WELL BE @ 2HR SIESTA.

Comment: I have recently discovered something more amazing. It's called Creative Visualization and Relaxation (CVR) used with light and sound technology. The lights put you in a very relaxed state while you listen to sessions in whatever area of self-improvement you want. 20 minutes of this is like having a 3 hour nap. You wake up feeling really, really refreshed and energized. Its absolutely amazing and works very well if you are trying to lose weight, quit smoking , just shift to a positive way of life plus any other self improvement things you would like to do. Check it out at www.newreality.com. It can change your life!!!

Comment: I've got a CD called "20 minute power nap" loaded into my laptop and iPod. Actually, it has a 17 minute "induction", then the narrator/hypnotherapist says "you'll sleep for 20 minutes", "you'll wake up refreshed" and so forth. Then there's 20 minutes of white noise, then the white noise abruptly stops and I wake up. If I take a late lunch --- healthy, homemade is best --- then lay down or even put my head down on my desk and listen to this CD, I'm "way under" in sleep and pop right back up after the 20 minutes. It almost feels like morning again! Somedays, I can do the CD, eat, and get a 10 minute walk done within a 1 hour lunch time. Colleagues and my supervisor admire this, but no one else does it.... they're "too busy" AND then fall asleep in meetings later in the day! The mind can be a hard thing to change! (Note: a former supervisor did try this and loved it... it made a lot of difference to him, both at work and home. He said he had more energy even when he got home at night AND also noticed that his running was easier, endurance-wise).

Comment: What I don't understand is the country's obsession with alarm clocks. Why not let your body rest until it naturally wakes up. When I get enough sleep, i'm not groggy the rest of the day. People are probably groggy after an hour or 2 nap because they actually need more sleep. American's have too much "sleep debt", but the fix to it is not forcing less sleep in your nap, because an expert says its right.

Comment: This is the best article I've read in a long time! My friends and Co workers are constantly making fun of me for the need to take naps in the middle of the day. I have a blanket in the bottom drawer of my desk and pull it out to take a quick snooze as needed. Top three favorite snooze areas: under my desk, behind my desk (no one will find me there), and my bosses truck...lol YAY for naps!!!

Comment: TO THE SECRETARY /RECEPTIONIST, TAKE A SHORT NAP ON YOUR LUNCH BREAK. MAYBE SCHEDULE YOUR LUNCH BREAK LATER IN THE DAY SO YOUR NAP WILL BE CLOSER TO YOUR NEED TO REFRESH TIME. I HAVE ALWAYS CLOSED MY OFFICE DOOR AND TAKEN A 20-30 MINUTE NAP ON MY LUNCH HOUR AND I BELIEVE IT WAS TO THE COMPANY'S BENEFIT BECAUSE I ALWAYS WOKE UP WITH TWICE THE ENERGY AND THE NEXT FEW HOURS FLEW BY. I READ ONCE THAT IN CHINA, EMPLOYERS MAKE ROOMS WHERE THEIR EMPLOYEES GO TO NAP. THIS IS NOT DONE ON LUNCH TIME BUT EVERYONE IS GIVEN A 15 MIN. NAP BREAK IN THE AFTERNOON.

Comment: I love naps. I have always been a napper--it helps me get much needed rest. Plus, I can be upset befor a nap, and when I wake up, I feel refreshed and able to think more clearly about the problem because I am not as tired as I was.
I think the day of employers allowing naps is a long way off, but if Dick Cheney can fall asleep in a press conference about the CA fires, maybe Bush will implement an Official Nap program before he leaves the White House.

Comment: I had the good fortune to work for a company that actually provided 2 rooms complete with sofas and nap sized chairs for employees to get some sleep during breaks and lunches. It was really nice working for a company that realized taking care of employees was in their best interest. I frequented the "Quiet Break Rooms" on a regular basis. I was never so productive or happy on the job.

Comment: I love this article! I have been taking short naps for years and my friends laugh at me. I always feel refreshed when I take a 20-30 minute nap right before going to the club or to a movie. My friends call me crazy and wonder how I can get up after such a short siesta. Now I have proof it's a good idea!!!!!

Comment: I think that a nap is a good thing! I am lucky to work for a Company that has a massage chair in a quiet area. I have been using this chair for years during my lunch hour. It helps me to de stress and relax my shoulders. Only a couple of others here do the same. I honestly think that each employer should take a hard look at how to put in a place and area for employees to close thie eyes, even for 10 minutes, I think we would all be better off.
Besides, did'nt I read somewhere that the most accidents on the road happen between 4-6PM, hmmm???

I would LOVE a nap around 1:30 or 2:00 but with some jobs it just isn't possible.

Comment: I keep a "pillow" (something soft) in my car to use as my pillow and bring a throw blanket folded up in my car to use if i get chilled during our winter months. It does wonders for the nap. You will have a harder time trying to sleep if you are not comfortable. As for the alarm, most cell phones have that built in. Happy Z's.

One section of the article I should bring up is how can someone decide when is the best time to take a nap? Cause after all don't we all go to bed, wake up, at different times? Plus it's obvious not everyone works the same hours. FATJOEYs got the idea!

Comment: I agree with 4realperson. I thought this was a discussion on napping. As for the types of jobs we do, they are all important. I myself work in an office as a victim advocate, but I am also a volunteer firefighter. Before doing these jobs I was employed in many fields both as a laborer and a office worker, which were demanding both on body and mind. To anyone who suggests that laborers do not use their brains doesn't realize that these people must always stay alert to their enviroment for safety reasons, often their jobs are dangerous and out of all of us they are the ones who deserve they rest.

Comment: A few additional tips I've learned from my personal experience with mid-day napping in my car.

    1. Pull down shades for your windows in case the sun in bright or your parking garage has lights.
    2. Ear plugs - especially help when a nearby car alarm is going off.
    3. If using ear plugs, set the alarm on your cell phone and put your phone on vibrate so you don't over sleep.
    4. Keep a blanket in your car for those colder fall and winter days.

    Sweet dreams!!!

Comment: I love my sleep. My ex-husband says my tombstone will read 'She's finally getting enough rest.' (He doesn't want to KNOW what his tombstone will read. Heh.) I work at a boring job at a postal processing plant, evening shift. I've found I benefit more from a brief nap on my half hour lunch at 6 p.m. than I would from food, which I gobble down at my 15-minute 4 p.m. break. I just go to my car, kick back the bucket seat, set the alarm on my cell, and snooze. Then I get a cup of coffee on the way back to the work floor. The main suggestion I got from this article was to drink the coffee BEFORE the nap. Good article. I pity anyone who can't nap.

Comment: What does it matter what color collar we wear. Napping and stress releasing activities are a good thing! Everybody should be able to snooze for at least 30 minutes a day, its healthy for you. For example, in some Asian countries the employer sponsors daliy yoga or stretching classes for everyone in the building so that the employees are awake and alert. In Greece and South America it is a nation wide event to take a sietsa during the day as a result, the people tend to be more productive and sharp and labor workers have less accidents. The only down side to having a national siesta time is that your day is a little longer, but if your hourly, how does it hurt. If your salary, then at least you won't have as much stress as usual.

My point is, it doesn't matter if you're a garbage person or the person who signs those checks, happy workers are more productive, therefore, if you have a stressful position whether its in or outdoors, in a blue or white collar, taking a nap can reduce your stress levels and give you some "me time" without your kids, your boss, your bills or traffic and enjoy the rest of your day. Then you can go home, or to class or to your second shift more relaxed, more rested and in a better mood.

Have a great day, people and lets try to get along!!

Comment: I am an accountant and work in a cubicle farm. Trust me I would love a nap during the day! I am a natural night owl but my profession requires that I work days. I also suffer from chronic insomnia. On top of that I am my elderly mother's caregiver. I would like to see one of these "macho" men handle my life for a week. Whether you work with muscles or brains it is still WORK. Some days you just need a lttle extra sack time to make it through. Coffe and muscles only go so far.
By the way a recent study found that lack of sleep leads to grouchiness.... Maybe most people commenting here could use a nap.

Comment: What does it matter what color collar you wear? Many other countries have techniques like this for all of their employees just becuase it lets you escape your job and unwind even if its only ofr 30 mnutes. In Greece and South America they have siestas, yet their work day is a little longer, but statistics show that they are much more productive as a people/ society with their naps. In some asian countries, the employer provides a gym, a daycare and morning yoga/ streching classes to enhance the mind and release negative tension just to work easier. My point is, no matter if you are a garbage person or the person who signs his check, any of these ideas can lower your stress and stress enduced feelings or headaches dramatically. That way, when you get home to your family, your dog or your second shift, you are more refreshed to handle anything that fate may throw you.

Now can't we all just get along and take a nap?!

Comment: boy a comment about napping turnd into a big discussion about people's jobs, their education and their personality. Every occupation and person is needed to make up this world. some make more money and others make less.some jobs are more physical and others are less, but that doesn't make anyone better than the other. So kids go to your rooms and take a nap, maybe when you wake up you will be able to get along alittle better.

    1. If you sleep everynight, whats so incredibly wrong with taking a nap?
    2. real men work....PERIOD...labor/desk whatever. get a life, quit being such a caveman
    3. If you bleed...you stop it from bleeding....if your tired, you sleep. whats so hard about that concept.

Unfortunately, there is no breakroom in many of these places to stretch out for 15 or 20 minutes. The Commonwealth of Virginia no longer requires companies to give workers short breaks. It's unfair, but it's reality.

Comment: Hey Watkinson, back off - I know many college and university educated people who can't spell...I agree with Forty6and2tom, about it being easier for office staff to squeeze in a nap than it is for anyone in the physical labour industry...these people work under extreme conditions, all types of weather and alot of the times are looked down by people like you...respect these people and the job they do. I work in the transportation industry, and commute an hour each way to my job, I also have 2 young children that I am the sole support parent for and there are times when I have to stop on my commute home to have a nap or risk causing an accident and not get home to them at all. Everyone in any job should be given the time to have a nap if they need it.

Comment: The way I see it, having a job that requires you to handle complex tasks all day can take alot out of a person, you feel mentally drained, especially if you are sitting in front of a computer all day. Sometimes a nap will work, sometimes I just take a walk. It's like sitting on a car trip for 8 hours, eventually you feel tired even though you are not doing anything. Moving around will get the circulation going and help. Also, light lunches help out. Avoid greasy burger joints.

Comment: What about all the day laborers I see taking their "siestas" on the lawns they stopped mowing at noon? Are those not naps?

Actually, naps are a good thing. I cleaned houses for 12 years while I went through college. I also had 5 children. I would stop cleaning the houses about midday and, in whatever house I was currently cleaning, sit on the couch, put my head back and snooze for 10 to 20 minutes. It gave me enough energy to finish the house and the day.

Now that I am an attorney, I find a nap helps my brain to be clear for the heavy-duty brain activity in which I need to engage for the remainder of the day, and sometimes well into the evening.

  • Posted By: babebluz @ 10/25/2007 9:27:04 AM

Comment: taking a nap at work is great. And if you are on lunch then you are not missing anything. I use the alarm on my phone so I dont sleep to long. I dont take a nap everyday. It is also a good stress relief if you are having a hetic day. Take a nap and wake ready to face the rest of the day. Cinbob127 it is better to set an alarm take a quick nap on lunch and wake a little more refreshed and able to work better, than to work tired and groggy and maybe mess up some very important paper work or project because you are tired and a short nap could have prevented it. My boss gets his 8 hours and then some from me weather I take a nap (on my time) or not.

  • Posted By: nosweatonmybrow @ 10/25/2007 9:16:46 AM

Comment: That's the advantage to being educated: you can squeeze in a nap and it's completely ok. When you are doing a manual labor (thanks for building my house and paving my driveway) than you don't have time to take a nap. But of course, you back that up with, "Oh ho ho I'm macho and don't need naps". Someone has to do the dirty work, and that's you. enjoy being tired Forty6and2tom.

  • Posted By: GoTigers80 @ 10/25/2007 9:05:29 AM

Comment: I don't think a nap is necessarily bad. I think as long as the nap is taken on the employee's own time (lunch, ie break) than there shouldn't be an issue.

I work a full-time job, a part-time job, and go to school. I work 7 days a week and leave the house at 6:30am and don't get home til about 9pm...then I have homework. I take a nap everyday at 2pm in my car...and trust me it is worth it! I don't drift away at my desk or even in boring psych lectures.

To say that someone is lazy because they can't sustain 8hrs at a desk is presumptuous and wrong.
Everyone has different schedules and body chemistry that affects how their bodies feel and work.

In addition, sitting at a desk for 8hrs (in my case 12) is BORING! Staring at a computer screen will put you to sleep faster than a lullabye!

I used to own a hairstyling salon, and believe me, there was no napping being done there!! Run, run, busy, busy. But trust me, I honestly used to nap at stop lights while to and from work. No way around it, with 2 small kids at home and a full time job. I would venture to say that the aforementioned men doing physical labor fall asleep while at the family reunion, the movies, at Disney on Ice, etc... Is that more acceptable to you? I now work in the dreaded "stupid cubical", and our employer chose grey walls and grey carpet with fluorescent lights--how's that for keeping us awake after lunch? I continue to suggest an optional "10-minute wake up", where employees gather to walk, talk, stretch, do a couple of jumping jacks, etc., to alleviate that afternoon crash. It can catch you if you don't rise up off your chair very often, as is true in most cases. You have to man up to the fact that you are not in everyone's shoes, and make a productive suggestion rather than being critical. Glad I don't sit next to you.

Comment: Wow! Forty6andwhatever, what's it to you if someone takes a nap? "Bark, bark, bark, i have a crappy attitude and other people are worthless." Go home, get some rest, and take it easy on determining what it takes to "be a man" comments. To everyone else, if you have an hour and your tired from possibly working two jobs, or studying late for a big exam, or maybe you celebrated something special the night before, then by all means take a nap. Or...just take one cause you can and it's your life to live however you choose. Naps are good!

Comment: im with the guy above. real men sweat and do blue collar, hard earned go to sleep at night dead tired work. not chase a pen around a desk, or missing the enter key.

      Comment: To Dude22;

I'm so glad we have you to dictate to us what a real "man" is. Thank you so much. *eye roll*

Listen, I don't look down on blue-collar laborers at all; we need them. But I spent 4.5 years in college going to school to become good at what I'm passionate about; computers and information systems so I could get a more satisifying career. It pays more than most blue collar jobs ever could, and I'm very good at what I do. There is the occasional physical labor aspect to the job (moving/racking servers and other equipment etc.), but using your brain is taxing as well. If everyone had your attitude, we would never advance as a society if everyone just used their muscle instead of their brains. Remember that next time you get your paycheck; it wouldn't be possible if the computer it was likely processed (or at the very least recorded on) wasn't maintainted by "unmanly men."

Comment: Dude 22 probably has that atitude because he needs some rest. Do the world a favor dude22 and lighten up take a break. because your body needs it.

No, that's just called trash. Any humans being deemed worthy of living, are the ones who have the initiative to get off their ass and get back into school, get an education, and get a great job - so we don't turn into lowlifes, such as yourself.

Now, get back to work and go back my groceries!

      • Posted By: ReWi @ 10/25/2007 11:44:08 AM

Comment: LeeO: If you're so educated, why are you asking someone to "back" your groceries instead of "bagging" them? I chose not to attend college, but I do know how to use proper grammar.

Comment: Lee O. If you're so educated, then why are you asking someone to "back" your groceries instead of "bagging" them? Maybe you need an education.

Comment: Hey Lee O....you like the building you live in, the streets and highways you drive on, then if you do thank people like Forty6and2tom who do that kind of work....being educated does not guarantee you a good job, it may help you, but there is no guarantee. Now if all the construction workers got off their asses and went back to school, who would build the houses that you educated people live in, and maintain the highways that you educated people drive on, and pick up the garbage that you educated people make. Would you educated people do it, hardly you don't want to get your hands dirty and you would just screw it up anyway. These people are not lowlifes, they are honest, hardworking individuals that do not get enough credit for the jobs they do. And pack your own damn groceries!!!!!

    • Posted By: topgun1 @ 10/25/2007 8:31:26 AM

Comment: Actually, it most cases what you just described dude22 is the jobs of the non educated. Not of the so called real man.

  • Posted By: Forty6and2tom @ 10/25/2007 6:55:00 AM

Comment: if you cant go to work, do your eight or maybe even ten hours of work, then you are a pittful human being. how well you do your job dictates what kind of charector you as a human posses. Especially if you work in a stupid cubical. Men on their feet all day doing physical labor have no need for a nap! Be a friggin man and do your job!

    • Posted By: Watkinson @ 10/25/2007 9:27:52 AM

Comment: this is to forty6and2tom - perhaps you should spend some time back in school instead of acting so macho. In four lines, you had as many spelling errors. What's it to you anyway, some people need to slow down during the day for whatever reason - I bet you wouldn't even last a day behind a desk working in front of a computer without a nap. So, why don't you just shut up!!

    • Posted By: Watkinson @ 10/25/2007 9:23:19 AM

Comment: this is to forty6and2tom - why don't you get an education and perhaps you would know how to spell. In your 6:55 comment I counted at least 4 spelling errors in as many lines. What difference does it make whether you are a physical laborer or an office worker, if you need a nap, what's it to you!!!

Comment: It's funny how an article about "napping" can turn such hateful responses.
        1. If you sleep everynight, whats so incredibly wrong with taking a nap?
        2. real men work....PERIOD...labor/desk whatever. get a life, quit being such a caveman
        3. If you bleed...you stop it from bleeding....if your tired, you sleep. whats so hard about that concept.
whatever you do during your day will wear you out, some need a nap, some don't. just let it go and reply with something positive so the people who are actually interested in this article can take something from it.
how friggin old are you people!?!?!

Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
