Again I thought this was about napping. I have worked as a laborer and in the office. I work as a victim advocate, which is in an office, and I am a volunteer firefighter. through out my live I have worked in both types of work enviroments, both are demanding on body and mind. To anyone to suggest the a laboerer does not use his/her mind does not realize the type of work they really do. Often the job can be dangerous and they must stay alert at all times for their own safety as well as others. I think that we all deserve a rese

im with the guy above. real men sweat and do blue collar, hard earned go to sleep at night dead tired work. not chase a pen around a desk, or missing the enter key.

"Real men sweat and do blue collar."

No, that's just called trash. Any humans being deemed worthy of living, are the ones who have the initiative to get off their ass and get back into school, get an education, and get a great job - so we don't turn into lowlifes, such as yourself.

Now, get back to work and go back my groceries!

      • Posted By: ReWi @ 10/25/2007 11:44:08 AM

LeeO: If you're so educated, why are you asking someone to "back" your groceries instead of "bagging" them? I chose not to attend college, but I do know how to use proper grammar.

Lee O. If you're so educated, then why are you asking someone to "back" your groceries instead of "bagging" them? Maybe you need an education.

      • Posted By: 2macksmom @ 10/25/2007 10:15:56 AM

Hey Lee O....you like the building you live in, the streets and highways you drive on, then if you do thank people like Forty6and2tom who do that kind of work....being educated does not guarantee you a good job, it may help you, but there is no guarantee. Now if all the construction workers got off their asses and went back to school, who would build the houses that you educated people live in, and maintain the highways that you educated people drive on, and pick up the garbage that you educated people make. Would you educated people do it, hardly you don't want to get your hands dirty and you would just screw it up anyway. These people are not lowlifes, they are honest, hardworking individuals that do not get enough credit for the jobs they do. And pack your own damn groceries!!!!!

      To Dude22;

I'm so glad we have you to dictate to us what a real "man" is. Thank you so much. *eye roll*

Listen, I don't look down on blue-collar laborers at all; we need them. But I spent 4.5 years in college going to school to become good at what I'm passionate about; computers and information systems so I could get a more satisifying career. It pays more than most blue collar jobs ever could, and I'm very good at what I do. There is the occasional physical labor aspect to the job (moving/racking servers and other equipment etc.), but using your brain is taxing as well. If everyone had your attitude, we would never advance as a society if everyone just used their muscle instead of their brains. Remember that next time you get your paycheck; it wouldn't be possible if the computer it was likely processed (or at the very least recorded on) wasn't maintainted by "unmanly men."

      • Posted By: topgun1 @ 10/25/2007 10:35:09 AM

Dude 22 probably has that atitude because he needs some rest. Do the world a favor dude22 and lighten up take a break. because your body needs it.

    • Posted By: topgun1 @ 10/25/2007 8:31:26 AM

Actually, it most cases what you just described dude22 is the jobs of the non educated. Not of the so called real man.

Not a bad article. It has some good tips, although I think anyone with minimum common sense could write this article themselves. One section of the article I should bring up is how can someone decide when is the best time to take a nap? Cause after all don't we all go to bed, wake up, at different times? Plus it's obvious not everyone works the same hours. FATJOEYs got the idea!

I agree with 4realperson. I thought this was a discussion on napping. As for the types of jobs we do, they are all important. I myself work in an office as a victim advocate, but I am also a volunteer firefighter. Before doing these jobs I was employed in many fields both as a laborer and a office worker, which were demanding both on body and mind. To anyone who suggests that laborers do not use their brains doesn't realize that these people must always stay alert to their enviroment for safety reasons, often their jobs are dangerous and out of all of us they are the ones who deserve they rest.

A few additional tips I've learned from my personal experience with mid-day napping in my car.

    1. Pull down shades for your windows in case the sun in bright or your parking garage has lights.
    2. Ear plugs - especially help when a nearby car alarm is going off.
    3. If using ear plugs, set the alarm on your cell phone and put your phone on vibrate so you don't over sleep.
    4. Keep a blanket in your car for those colder fall and winter days.

    Sweet dreams!!!

I love my sleep. My ex-husband says my tombstone will read 'She's finally getting enough rest.' (He doesn't want to KNOW what his tombstone will read. Heh.) I work at a boring job at a postal processing plant, evening shift. I've found I benefit more from a brief nap on my half hour lunch at 6 p.m. than I would from food, which I gobble down at my 15-minute 4 p.m. break. I just go to my car, kick back the bucket seat, set the alarm on my cell, and snooze. Then I get a cup of coffee on the way back to the work floor. The main suggestion I got from this article was to drink the coffee BEFORE the nap. Good article. I pity anyone who can't nap.

What does it matter what color collar we wear. Napping and stress releasing activities are a good thing! Everybody should be able to snooze for at least 30 minutes a day, its healthy for you. For example, in some Asian countries the employer sponsors daliy yoga or stretching classes for everyone in the building so that the employees are awake and alert. In Greece and South America it is a nation wide event to take a sietsa during the day as a result, the people tend to be more productive and sharp and labor workers have less accidents. The only down side to having a national siesta time is that your day is a little longer, but if your hourly, how does it hurt. If your salary, then at least you won't have as much stress as usual.

My point is, it doesn't matter if you're a garbage person or the person who signs those checks, happy workers are more productive, therefore, if you have a stressful position whether its in or outdoors, in a blue or white collar, taking a nap can reduce your stress levels and give you some "me time" without your kids, your boss, your bills or traffic and enjoy the rest of your day. Then you can go home, or to class or to your second shift more relaxed, more rested and in a better mood.

Have a great day, people and lets try to get along!!

I am an accountant and work in a cubicle farm. Trust me I would love a nap during the day! I am a natural night owl but my profession requires that I work days. I also suffer from chronic insomnia. On top of that I am my elderly mother's caregiver. I would like to see one of these "macho" men handle my life for a week. Whether you work with muscles or brains it is still WORK. Some days you just need a lttle extra sack time to make it through. Coffe and muscles only go so far.
By the way a recent study found that lack of sleep leads to grouchiness.... Maybe most people commenting here could use a nap.

What does it matter what color collar you wear? Many other countries have techniques like this for all of their employees just becuase it lets you escape your job and unwind even if its only ofr 30 mnutes. In Greece and South America they have siestas, yet their work day is a little longer, but statistics show that they are much more productive as a people/ society with their naps. In some asian countries, the employer provides a gym, a daycare and morning yoga/ streching classes to enhance the mind and release negative tension just to work easier. My point is, no matter if you are a garbage person or the person who signs his check, any of these ideas can lower your stress and stress enduced feelings or headaches dramatically. That way, when you get home to your family, your dog or your second shift, you are more refreshed to handle anything that fate may throw you.

Now can't we all just get along and take a nap?!

  • Posted By: crazylady9 @ 10/25/2007 10:48:30 AM

boy a comment about napping turnd into a big discussion about people's jobs, their education and their personality. Every occupation and person is needed to make up this world. some make more money and others make less.some jobs are more physical and others are less, but that doesn't make anyone better than the other. So kids go to your rooms and take a nap, maybe when you wake up you will be able to get along alittle better.

A NAP at work?!?! I'll get fired. Working in NYC and taking naps at work is not doable... although we all badly need it.

Does any one have sleep disorders I do I am on a C-Pap machine every night and I get sleepy during the day even tho I sleep 7-8 hours a night

  • Posted By: talker2 @ 10/25/2007 10:23:11 AM

    I know I work 12 hours and I need a nap

  • Posted By: toranto1 @ 10/25/2007 10:18:33 AM

hey ek...i agree, its an unfair reality that companies don't recognize the benefits of allowing their employees to refresh and recharge during the course of the work day. i wonder how your company would feel about a 2 minute "yoga break" instead of a nap. www.omtheroadyoga.com

  • Posted By: 4realperson @ 10/25/2007 10:14:27 AM

Comment: It's funny how an article about "napping" can turn such hateful responses.
    1. If you sleep everynight, whats so incredibly wrong with taking a nap?
    2. real men work....PERIOD...labor/desk whatever. get a life, quit being such a caveman
    3. If you bleed...you stop it from bleeding....if your tired, you sleep. whats so hard about that concept.
whatever you do during your day will wear you out, some need a nap, some don't. just let it go and reply with something positive so the people who are actually interested in this article can take something from it.
how friggin old are you people!?!?!

  • Posted By: talker2 @ 10/25/2007 10:13:39 AM

This is for the person who thinks you have to be old to take a nap.. well my dear I hope you get old one day and write us back and tell us you don't take naps. Naps are great youg or old have a great day

  • Posted By: talker2 @ 10/25/2007 10:10:48 AM

When you get sleepy and you can take a nap why not. The older people have the right to nap, maybe one day you will grow old and want to nap.. so get over it
