Only anti-viral or very high alcohol hand sanitizers protect you. Most products in stores are only anti-bacterial...flu strains and pandemics are caused by viruses so these products offer no protection. I am a nurse and was at a conference yesterday I tried a product called Mentholatum responsebeta it is an anti-viral hand sanitizer that claims to be scientifically tested to kill H1N1 Influenza A Virus (swine Flu) as well as other viruses and bacteria (including E-coli) that I could potientially come into contact with daily. I got a free sample but would recommed that we all protect ourselves and others from the spread of viruses and bacteria. Prevention is better than cure after all. It ticks all the boxes. Washing with soap and water is always the smart defensive strategy. But those subscribing to CDC's 1996 hand hygiene recommendations i.e. "use alcohol-based hand sanitizer gels" are exposing themselves to a set of dangerous problems. Amazing that CDC makes no updated mention of alcohol-free hand sanitizers introduced during past 6 or 7 years, including Soapopular. These products are as effective and SAFER.

There's no data that suggests that hand sanitizers kill viruses, so using them after you sneeze because of a cold probably wouldn't do a damn thing.
