Yes, it is possible that a small company comes up with a never-seen-before search engine technology. However, people have learned to turn to google whenever they need an answer. Google is the current generations' oracle. I don't beleieve google will be surpassed in the next decade. Despite all the complaints about google returning too many results, marketers struggle consistently to rank high on Google's results. As the website http://www.emarketinginabox.com/ teaches us about search engine optimization and that Google has the final word. It's all about ranking high on google.

I have made the perfect "third Generation" search engine and I wont be seen till the new year. I will start the year with a big bang when my search engine is released in the world which is called -OMAX-

I HAVE THE THIRD GENERATION SEARCH ENGINE BUT I AM NOT GOING TO RELEASE IT JUST YET. I HAVE FORMATED THE PERFECT MASTER PIECE.

I have to say that I love Google, it always gets me to the site I'm really looking for. Other search engines just want to steal their idea!

Everyone wants to de-throne Google...the search marketplace is evolving just like other traditional media....when I was young we had 3-4 broadcast TV stations...today I have access to 500 cable stations...I still watch broadcast but I love what cable has to offer...who would of thought that Monday night football today can only be watched on ESPN..... but Sunday night football is really just as nice...Google, Yahoo and MSFT are like the large broadcast providers...search ...just like broadcast will evolve and we (the user) will be better served for it.....vertical search engines dedicated to a particular user group are great but will not replace a broad provider...the market share Google has today is unique and really can't last...but I don't see a (new) large, broadbased search provider stealling marketshare...I see more vertical engines coming online to service niche groups...The large providers will understand they are a great place to start a search but need to give more functionality to the user during the search to refine the search so to create a more complete user experience...an good example of this is Business.com in the "vertical space" and Ask.com in the broad space...both are innovating to provide best of breed user experience that helps the searcher really find what they're looking for.....search is an ecosystem....rarely if ever does a person use and engine exclusively...the future is in the blend of finding the right engine at the desired time ...it's never as simple as a "this " or "that" discussion. I don't forsee Google getting "Alta-Vista'd" . I work for a Medium Sized business...I'm a father of three...and have numerous hobbies and interests...there is no one search engine that meets my needs....and I don't forsee ever having a one stop shop for search

    1. I particularly like quintura. It was fresh and it was easy to see a number of related tags related to my search that I could click and brain map my way to what I wanted. Google on the other hand, could just as easily develop the same technology and gauge it as an option on their homepage.

    2. Google have something called Google Suggest that has been around far longer than Yahoo implemented it on their US site. In fact Google china (google.cn) has been implementing 'suggest' for the past year. I don't know why they don't utiliise it on all their national pages.

    3. The google web history is great for finding things that I'd forgotten to bookmark earlier. It means i can search for things and not have to worry if I forget. Same with history in internet explorer or firefox I also like the notebook feature, but one of the annoying things is too many bookmarking services these days (Facebook, deliciious, fark.... etc..)

The woman in the story Googled: "snorkeling beaches blue water" and had no success. Later, she was quoted as saying, "I wanted to zoom in on the best snorkeling beaches." If she had Google "best snorkeling beaches" in the first place, she would have had success. Much of the search success hinges on the search input - remember garbage in, garbage out.

A great tool for comparing search results from a wide variety of search engines -- large and small -- is Zuula (www.zuula.com). It's particularly handy because it presents the results for all engines in a common format, so that checking the results from different engines doesn't require getting accustomed to various different search result formats.

I remember Google as a newcomer: I look forward to seeing the next big newcomer.

I took the liberty to Google and try out all the search engines that were mentioned in this article. Some were in private beta. They all had one thing in common, they were all Google look-alikes.

After using them, I have to say that Google has no reason to worry yet. They were all not very good. I have said it before and I will say it again, focus on relevance is overrated. What I think is relevant is so different from what someone else might think is relevant. I use Yahoo's search assist to get the right spelling for complicated word and then I go to Google and search for them. Yahoo censors so much that I would not know that half the net existed if it wasn't for Google.

If someone is looking for a search engine to tell them what they should be looking for, then Yahoo is great. I like choices. I like to make up my own mind. That is why I Google.

Anyone who uses Google long enough can go through 10 pages in 20 seconds or less, and find the most relevant stuff themselves since Google offers snippets of what's inside the pages.

As long as Google keeps giving customers options as to how they want to search, then Google will not be "Alta Vistaed." The graphical representation is very good idea(Graphical representation has changed the web dictionary, forever) but the one out here now are so badly executed that I see no treat been posed to Google.
