I am not sure if Jason Mclure's article on Eritrean refugees"Waiting for war" was intent to bring forth the agony of uncertainity the refugees are living in or to serve as a moral boost to the Ethiopian army as it's threatning to wage a war on Eritrea. His report on the current Eritrea's affair, while some may be true, is filled with misinformation and Ethiopian propaganda to demonize and discredit Eritrean leadership at the highest level. He's missing the core meaning of true journalism: to be neutral. One can't help but wonder why Mr. Mclure stopped short at the refugee camp Shimemba and not visited to the thousands of Eritrean civilians living at make shift camp and in a horrible condition because Ethiopia refused to abide by the international rulings and allow for border demarcation to take place? Thanks God to the internet people can have accurate information on what's really going on anywhere in the world and make judgements and not have to wait to be fed with biased reports.

"Eritrea's ministry of information, which controls the media, has taken to issuing press releases with titles like "Better to Be Seen Proudly Standing in Respectable Homegrown Queue Lines.""

If you google the same article the journalist is talking about, at the beginning the article will indicate the fact that its a commentary quite clearly in response to a NY Times article. Although published on the Eritrean Ministry of Information site, at the end of the article the disclaimer says: "The views expressed in the commentary section of Shabait.com do not necessarily reflect those of the Ministry of Information of the State of Eritrea. The writer contributed this article and bears sole responsibility for its contents." A far cry from what is been called here a 'press release'.

a good sign for the demented is to mix reality and wishful thinking. Ethiopia is on the verge of collape. Why? when a tyrant loses confidence and statrts killing indiscrimainately his own people, the end is in sight. What is is happaning in Ethiopia is hundreds of times worse than what some say about Eritrea. When I say this I don not intend to condone any act of bad governence- Eritrea should clean its acts; but I sometimes wander whether people in some quarters think they can fool the world by hiding the obvious in Ethiopia just because it tows the line in washington. Thank God the That the American people are not morons. Africanese is not an alibi for killing your own citizens. Allowing turning our faces aways fromj " little injustices" in The second world war resulted in 44 million deaths and 6 million Jews dead. Keeping singing Ethiopia is developing economically and we will continue this discusion in a fews years time. The genocide in the Ogaden, the masssacre in Addis Ababa, the killings in Gambella, Hawasa, Oromia.... That si called economic develeopment.?

This message is for Ethiopians, Economically Ethiopia is doing well at this time. I am very Happy for that; they have to make sure make sure that this economy keeping growing. Then again if you want start war basically the economy starting sliding back ward where it is starting. Believe me it does not take much the economy to go down. No one knows the out come of war. For example America as a powerful they are, no one expect war in Iraq will take this long, it affecting the economy America in general. War is not the answer. We need stay away from war. African peoples are dying for no justification. As it is AIDS is killing us ridiculously. When are we going change? Some times I feel???s being African is just like curse So Meles/Ethiopian President let me advice you about war from What is History tells in us Eritrea economy was growing by 7% before the war, the same way peoples Visiting Ethiopia now, Eritrea was that same way before the war. Look at what happen to Eritrea now. War is like Cancer will kill you slowly but surely

I think that the only solution is economic. The United Nations should sponsor a wall between Eritrea and Etiopia, and simultaneously call for a massive infusion of foreign capital to both countries. War is a product of hopelessness. Once the people see some hope of prosperity, they will forget about war!

  • Posted By: efly @ 10/31/2007 9:44:54 PM

Is it me or does the United Nations seem to becoming less and less powerful. I remember watching this conflict on the news and thought they had come to a conclusion in 2002. Now 5 years later and nothing has changed. There is a simple solution to end this before it becomes a war again and that would be for the USA to pressure Ethiopia to accept the border implementation. We all know that Ethiopia is a pawn of the united states and with the flick of a wrist USA can force these two countries to end this dispute. -Edward

I am an Active Duty Marine that had the opportunity to serve as a United Nations Observer monitoring the border dispute between these two countries for more than 6 months. It was the best overseas tour I have had the opportunity to experience. The people of both Ethiopia and Eritrea are extremely kind and thoughtful, even more so further away from the larger cities. The poverty is powerfully sad on both sides of the border and I was amazed by the numerous families I met torn apart by this border dispute. Wars have a unique impact on economies, they drive them. I believe that both of these countries support their own struggling economies by continuing to push dollars into their limited military forces. The military of both sides of this dispute do alot to support their economies. I would go back for a second tour with UNMEE in an instant. Being involved with the variety of issues you experience with their day to day lives in Ethiopia and Eritrea really make you appreciate our fortune here in the United States. Semper Fidelis

As an American solider I have traveled to hundreds of cities around the world but the one I can never forget is Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. The people are the kindest and the saftey of the city makes it very lovable. In my stay in Eritrea on a mission a few years ago I found it to be much more advanced than other nations including Ethiopia where I was almost robbed.
I went to the country side of both nations and in Ethiopia you see so much poverty and disease and people suffering while in Eritrea you see a ray of hope with schools and clinics and a change from the very dismal Africa that I have been visting for years.
Eritreans are nationalists while in Ethiopia people hate their government. The US must stop supporting the Meles Zenawi regime and consult Mr.Zenawi to put a proper mechanism of on how to lead a nation and not just Addis Ababa .

  • Posted By: American Solider @ 10/31/2007 8:57:28 PM

Newsweek is not being fair. There is a lot of inconsistency in this story. Eritrea is the hope of Africa. As an American I can vouch for it. The leader of the country is the best thing that has happened in Africa in Centuries as he works closley with his people in building the nation. Many people can't accept the fact that an African leader is smarter and wiser than those who have created misery around the globe. If you see all of his interviews and his actions when it comes to Eritrea, no other leader in the world can compare with his style. Add to that a very strong people of Eritrea and the minority regime in Ethiopia won't stand a chance at survival if they go to war with Eritrea. Everyone has had it with the Genocidal regime in Addis and their days are numbered. If it was not for the US supporting them they would have been finished by now and the US only needs them since it has invested a lot of corrupted money, but when that is gone so will the Meles Zenawi regime in Addis. Meanwhile in Eritrea life will go on simply because Eritrea does not depend on anyone but herself to develop and make good on the promise it made itself before independence.

    To toppester:

Madame, you are blind to data, aren't you? Typical libbie, no matter the standards, the data, the history, the headlines, the Rap "lyrics," the story upon story of South African crime, incessant pan-African war, Phliadelphia blacks running amok with guns galore and shooting cops (2 in a single day just today!) and each other with impunity, a statistical quagmire of the virtual non-existence of a black family with a competent, hard-working, dedicated father leading it . . . still you fall prey to the degradating instinct so prominent in their "culture" by resorting to the homosexual inuendo, don't you? See how this culture has you in a strait jacket of rationalizing it away? Truly, the Emperor has no clothes, but you just can't see it, can you?

Poor libbles, fated to watch their entire neighborhoods become slums by their indifferent embrace of depravity in thought, word, deed and omission. The acorn doesn't fall far from the oak in your case, does it?

Is scatalogical digression the length and breadth of your intellect?

The people of Eritreans are in a grave danger under the PFDJ regime and from outisde forces, The dictator of Eritrea Issayas Afewerki who is Tigray Ethiopian form his mothers side is doing a great service to the Ethiopia regime "Weyane" keeping Eritreans silent from speakin out. On the other hand, the Weyane wouldn't accept border decission that have been made by the EEBC and start the demarcation. Their only idea is to accupy Badma "the main land for the war conflict",and the port of Assab by force with the U.S. blessings. Therefore, the poor Eritreans have no choice but to save their life from these injustices, and take a risk all at the same time.

Shame on you Jason. You should be writing more on, who the stumbling block for all this mess is, than speculating about the grim cloud that is hovering. Why are you not asking what UN, US, EU and AU are doing to avert the mess. If the war starts they will be equally to blame as the two warring factions. It is no good the west telling Africans about democracy and rule of law, but fail to demonstrate and enforce it .

    To UpNorth99:

However, Europe and the U.S. have also had long periods of peace, prosperity, technological advancement and are now so scientifically proficient they are about to eliminate themselves from the face of the planet to be displaced by Muslims in Europe and Hispanics in the U.S.

Can a single African or black-led "nation" make similar claims? Just take a look at where war is in the world (you can Google it), and realize that impoverishment, pestilence, starvation, rape, murder, gang rape, HIV/AIDS and a host of other such STD's, bastard children and warfare ARE THE RULE, NOT THE EXCEPTION.

Ah, but what would a liberal live by if not the Rule by Exception? Shoot, the only reason you lost the Gore Bush election was due to the felonious proclivities of your voters, remember? Black jail birds did you in, laddie!

It is high time for Ethiopia to finish the unfinished business and focus on its development. No one can drink pure water in the presence of a spoiler. Eritrea's dream of becoming an African superpower without any resource evaporated since day one but still the dictator is meddling in internal affairs of the Horn Nations and the Great Lakes in the hope of materializing his wishful thinking by proxy. This must end sooner than later. Ethiopia has the right to pre-empt the dictator before creating havoc and mayham further.

The article failed to mention the mad dog behavior of Isayas. If the victim was an European or western nation, the western media should have advocated a pre-emptive strike. Isayas acts are not only sponsoring terrorists in the horn but he is terrorizing his own people with no western nation calling for his trial in the international Court of Tribune. Enough is enough for the Ethiopian and Eritrean people. The Eritrean dictator and its administration must go now.
