In reality it won't mean a thing. For a short time the amount of new crap TV coming out of Hollywood will drop and we'll only have to deal with re-cycled crap for a while.

I'm sure India can provide us with cheaper crap TV so I see no reason to deal with the Union. I am hoping they break the union completely. In my opinion Unions are anti-American because they disrupt a market driven industry and create artificial influences which support low producers. Maybe the writers can now experience the real life of economics which most Americans have experienced over the past 20 years.

    welcome to reality.

As a parting shot I do believe a talented writer should be able to get royalties from their work just as any other creative talent. I just don't believe it should be done for everyone. If a writer sucks they don't deserve anything at all let alone royalties.

Writers as a whole are generally underappreciated ??? it doesn???t matter what industry one is in ??? entertainment, finance or technology. It???s also assumed that writing is easy. It isn???t. The prevailing attitude with most people today is that anyone and everyone who sits in front of a keyboard thinks they can write. Not true. Truman Capote put it best: ???That's not writing, that's typing.??? And most can???t do that either.

Should the writers be going on strike? Hard to say. But movies and television shows have words, and without writers, we???d all be watching The Red Balloon.

Someone was talking about writers having three cars and big houses... Have you actually met any writers?

Getting someone to seriously read one's writing is hard in this town, let alone having someone produce it. I would guess that about 80% of the writers - good writers - in this town can barely be heard and the ones who are making any money from their writing are living in 1 or 2 bedroom apartments with 10-year-old cars and are struggling to make the rent and their bills just like you are.

    Just a little reality check.

You may have your 401K, your medical, dental, paid vacations, etc. but writers and musicians are working without a net. Many that I know are living off credit cards, hoping that that next script is the one that will at least pay the credit cards back. That's why every percentage point counts.

The people who are making BIG money are few and far between. That's why these guys are fighting for every little bit so that the writer who is hanging on by his fingernails has just a little bit more of a precipice to hang on to.

Gee - kinda like the teachers that have taught all of the great minds of the world, only to sit back and watch their students excel and earn more in in a year than a teacher in a lifetime? So - life isn't fair. What a surprise.

AAAmmeen!!! Without a writer you have no damn story! Give em' hell WGA! You've got my support 100%

As a writer myself (novelist), I don't blame the Writer's Guild at all for being angry. Hollywood doesn't think twice about doling out MILLIONS to actors and who is it that has to put the words in those ridiculous mouths? WRITERS! If you think actors can "act" w/o a script, then just pick up a tabloid and see how well they run their personal lives. In fact, how many times this year has am actor/actress gotten themselves in trouble for saying something insensitve? I've lost count. Writing is a damned hard job, be it scripts, novels, even songwriting can be hell. It's endless hours staring at a blank page of paper and then when you do fill it, having to revise it and maybe even having to start all over if it's not quite right. Those writers in Hollywood are working hader than anybody else over there, and no one knows this better than us other writers. Give Hollywood hell, WGA!

in reply to "who cares"...what exactly do you mean when you say it's not like they have jobs that actually matter? The entertainers of this nation are just as important as the doctors and the teachers! Why does the USO exisit? All forms of entertainment, tv, movies, books, all of it has value. Without the writers, you have nothing. Do firefighters need dispatchers? Do teachers need principals? Do doctors need nurses? You should care about the writers!

Writers SHOULD get paid for their contributions! With people making LOTS of money, why not the writers? They are under valued!!!
It's NOT fair that they recieve so little for the work that they do. I agree, STRIKE! It might make those who are used to using you understand what it's like without your hard work!!!
    GOOD FOR YOU!!!
Good luck to you, I HOPE that you DO get what you deserve!!

  • Posted By: ArmyWifeJessica @ 11/01/2007 5:09:38 PM

Writers SHOULD get paid when their materials are used! It is NOT fair for others to profit from their work while they are hung out to dry!
Strike! It might motivate those in power to really understand your contribution. Your value might be seen when it is missing.
Good luck to you all. I think it's a great idea!!!

Who cares what these crybabies make or what they demand. It's not like they're teachers, firefighters, doctors, etc. with jobs that actually matter. Does anyone really believe the country will come to a standstill because they stop writing jokes and bad movie scripts?

  • Posted By: atornipete @ 11/01/2007 4:58:59 PM

Stop watching trashy movies and tv shows! Start reading books!

  • Posted By: 23smith19 @ 11/01/2007 4:55:47 PM

As far as I'm concerned, unions are merely a tool of a socialistic/communistic society. Let my performance determine what I'm paid. Far too many union workers are allowed to kick back and perform their jobs in a marginal to mediocre manner. Write better stuff and get paid more.

Gee would that mean more re-runs? What would six more months of re-runs hurt? We have more of that than anything else anyway. I agree with the writers. They need more money. Everyone should work as a team and everyone should share the wealth.

with all respect for the respected ones
all that masonic movement was in holwd, they dealt for a holliness in isrl then its like bentaforse the days of

I guess that would mean more re-runs........most of the year re-runs are shown anyway so what would a few more months hurt? I say the writers need more money. Where would the show be without them. Everyone must work as a team. Everyone should share the wealth.

I agree with Lindakc, please cut the stars salarys, for goodness sakes, you could feed starving countries on those salaries and I am so tired of them thinking they know it all and that everyone lives for their opinions. Share their salaries with the writers, they wouldn't be making that kind of money without them.

I don't know much about the financial background in producing a show or movie; however, I do feel that writers are a strong asset to the creation. I don't think that they are being too greedy, a mere 2.5% (which I got the impression for them was a pipe dream, not an amount that they actually hoped to receive) is pennies compared to what everyone else involved in the production of the writers' creative juices is making. If it's a matter of whether or not they earned it...I feel that they have. A lot of effort (and sometimes research depending on the topic being written about) goes into creating scripts. That doesn't even include the monitoring of characters or what the actor possibly wants to do. I don't work in the film industry, so I'm sure that is a lot more that goes on that I don't know about, but one thing is clear: 0.3% is definitely a rip-off compared to the money that some of the other people are making.
