The corrupt fatah people are being used as murderous patsies for Israel's divide and rule games. It will change nothing since nothing changes of the underlying occupation.

Or in the classic words of Pres Clinton

    "IT'S THE OCCUPATION STUPID"

    From Outer Left Field:

For a 'New Palestine' in westmost Saudi Arabia, the land area described below is slightly larger than Lebanon, Kuwait, or Qatar. Its area might be 12,000 sq mi. New port development might be done in its southwest on the Red Sea, in the bays west of Ash Sharmah, with a major population center surrounding that. Tabuk, nearest major city in Saudi Arabia, is 90 miles distant.

P.S. to Outer Left Field post below.

The cost of a "New Palistine" in westmost Saudi Arabia (on Aqaba Gulf and from Duba to Jordan), for openers, should be $100-200 billion. There is about one person per sq mi average resident in the area today. It's mostly sand, dirt/clay and mountain. The singular attractions are complete open sharelines on the Gulf of Aqaba and Red Sea, port access at Aqaba City/Jordan, probable underground well water, and possible oil under the sands. The development of fishing and marinas is reasonable.

Say at $200 billion, the cost might be divided as:
    Europe: $33.3 B
    UN: $33.3 B
Saudis and Gulf states: $33.3 B
    World Bank: $33.3 B
Oil Companies, EXXON et al: $33.3 B
    U.S.: $33.3 B
    Total: $200 B

All of the above would receive immeasurable benefits fro a resolution of the Israel-Palestine problem, and/or, are major financiers of the 3rd World (UN/WorldBank). Hopefully half the costs could be recouped through "creative financing" packages, eg, 50-year housing and business-startup mortgages.

The 'start-up' cost is far below the expected cost of the Iraq War of $1 trillion.

    From Outer Left Field:

The real solution to a Palestinian State is to "separate the two peoples." Perhaps put one in Sicily and the other in Malta? No? But put the two in distant four-square spaces with room to grow and some water and mountains between them - at least 100-200 miles of water and mountains.

That solution is a "New Palestine" in westmost Saudi Arabia on Gulf of Aqaba / Red Sea above Duba running up to Jordan's border. Lots of water for the Palestinians to fish and the desert can be brought to life. Perhaps the Palestinians keep Gaza (for a Mediterranean presense) which is expanded to El Arish in Egypt - and a superhighway connects Gaza and New Palestine thru the Sinai and bridging Aqaba Gulf below Elat/AqabaCity. A majestic 4-5 mile oceanic bridge.

The Israelis get all the West Bank and maybe half the Sinai shore of Aqaba Gulf with a connection to Mount Sinai (mt. Musa). And maybe the Golan permanently. The shrine district of Jerusalem becomes a UN international district. East Jerusalem is a permanent enclave of Palestinian goverance. Israel's capital is moved to Tel Aviv. Perhaps Jerusalem becomes an International City with a corridor to Jericho and Aman-Jordan. For passage of pilgrims to Jerusalem's shrines.

    That should do it.
About 100-200 miles between them (except for Gaza if Gaza remains).

Where is Dennis Ross? Where is Henry Kissinger? Where is Jim Baker? Where is Jimmy Carter?
So what? If they were so successful, why is the Middle East still at war? I'll tell you why - the Arabs have been given many opportunities to work out a reasonable peace, but they haven't done much about it because they really don't have much desire for peace.

Okay, let's review: A monumentally important Mideast project; poor planning; a notable lack of preparation and an unwillingness to acknowledge/ignorance of the region's recent history; an arrogant expectation that things will simply go the adminstration's way; a potentially disastrous outcome that may result from the aforementioned poor planning, and an almost breathtaking failure to acknowlege as much or do much of anything about it. Now tie it all up in a bow and put it next to the other foreign-policy "accomplishments" of this administration. I can't tell any difference, can you? One year left. God help us all.
