Comment: I expect some of the terra cotta amphorae to contain spaghetti. After it was harvested from the fields in autumn, spaghetti was often loaded onto these ships for transport to market.

If we're lucky, we might even be able to figure out how they sauced it, back in the day!

Comment: He is risen is true but unfortunately his words have been forgotten. Christians have turned to the Golden Calf of materialism and support war, corruption and torture. They are the supporting cast for "the Evil Empire". Compassion is no longer a Christian attribute. Without change in or objectives, policies and values, we create our own gloom and doom.

Comment: yes i am interested in learning from the past but always look forword to the future, i want to do that because if the past was so great that as a cluture we look to it for guidance in our futures than how much more can we look forword to in the future. however the way this is possible is to make sure we do not get bogged down in the present or the past we need a balence of freedom in each of the mind sets, so we can really expierance a healthy present and a more welcomed tomorrow

Comment: This is really interesting, it is awesome that we can glean so much from the past. One day perhaps there no longer will be any mystery and the evolution of our kind, and our society will be an open book to us. One can only hope that this will be a valuable asset.

Comment: i agree but not only to cope with the problems but to raise above them and not be bogged down by this "Gloom and Doom" so we can see ahead of this fake reality of fear that has been trying and succeeding to controle our culture

  • Posted By: taichi-wuchi @ 11/02/2007 12:28:39 PM

Comment: I am not interested in Gloom and Doom; I am interested in learning from the past and correcting our direction accordingly. We have to perceive reality realistically and bring about the right solution for the situation. Otherwise, gloom and doom is our fate. We are being saturated with gloom and doom to prepare us for the worst instead of making the necessary changes to cope with the problems.

Comment: I'm not sure about all the doom in the member comments about looking backward. The find of ships still significantly intact, with their cargo or skeletal remains of such, is entirely exciting. Physical confirmation of our forebearers gives us a fantastic link to the past, but also to who we are today. Did the doom-and-gloom crowd, who doesnt want to look back and learn, miss the lack of evidence for war? These weren't war ships, nor did they carry soldiers or weaponry to destroy their neighbors. The ancestors were traders; the nations were interdependent on each other for supplies, both basic and luxury. Maybe those folks gave us their future (our today) because they were smart enough to not destroy each other. Maybe cooperation and negotiation was a value they held dear.

Comment: We as humans have done great things, that need not be forgotten. These things need to serve as inspiration to us all to better ourselves in our future. But we as humans have also done terible things that must also be remembered, in order to prevent them from happening again. One can not move forward with ones future, in less one knows and understands there past.

Comment: There are so many things that can be learned from history, but unfortunately we never learned. So may be it is better to stop digging and spend the money on the betterment of our future.

Comment: It is strange that people are very interested in the past these days and not interested in the future. It reminds me of an extinct tribe of Indians who rode on their horses seated facing backwards because they were more interested in where they had been than where they where going. The present is a mess and we are headed for a disaster in the future if we do not change our values, priorities and direction. We are headed for world war three which will kill most of humanity and put us back in the dark ages. We need to start planning for the future while we still have that possibility.

Comment: The problem that many Italians encounter in situations like this may not be lack of funding, but archaeological fatigue. Hugh areas of the country could be nothing but hugh archaeological digs, and the Italians are charged with trying to run a modern society when anytime you try to expand a plant, build a road, modernize a rail line, even dig a basement, you could be shut down indefinitely due to a major archaeological find.

  • Posted By: shstrahsburg @ 11/01/2007 9:39:58 PM

Comment: What a fascinating discovery. Reading the article i'm surprised the area wasn't discovered earlier than it was. I hope I can visit and see the area one day to see these things. it's really cool to see how others lived thier lives before us. I'm glad the lion didn't make it to rome though. The gladiator fighting was a terrible thing. It blows my mind that so many people were into watching something so terrible.

Comment: This is a truly amazing find for so many reasons. Stories like these should get more attention than they currently receive. The media should be more deeply involved; providing photos, film clips, and information about the dig as they become available. It is the only way to make the public more aware of not only the findings themselves but also their importance and historical significance. I personally find it a shame the we can find countless billions of dollars for fruitless ventures in the middle east while projects like these face the possibility of never being completed due to insufficient financial support. Truly a shame indeed.

Comment: Fascinating discovery, fascinating series of comments. What a wild cross section of life both in the mud and in the comments. The challenge with both is separating the mud from the items of real interest and substance. And there is sooooo much stinking mud!

  • Posted By: invinoveritas @ 11/01/2007 9:15:13 PM

Comment: This is an amazing, astounding discovery that deserves widespread recognition and support to allow proper excavation and preservation. We need to work together to find a way to share the objects and information that will be revealed as work progresses.

I believe someone commented earlier that our past can help guide our future. How true! A find of this magnitude, containing so many diverse cultures over a nearly 1,000 year span is an archeologists' dream. To ask the public to contribute a small fee to assist the recovery as they share in this valuable find is hardly unreasonable. How else do you think it will be paid for?

If you have any imagination or curiosity at all, these 39 ships, their crew and cargo can provide years of fascinating study. I can't wait for the stories and the pictures of this discovery to be published and for the museum they deserve to be built. I'll take my family there any day!

(To answer the question regarding respecting the dead: we respect those who have gone before us by learning from what they experienced and opening our minds to what their lives have to teach us. Leaving them buried in the mud and paving over them hardly seems respectful.)

Comment: I truly find it amazing that people from all over the world can discuss this archaeological discovery in real time. I am not a grammar nut, obviously from my last post, my only pet peeve is when journalists and experts do not spell archaeology/archaeologists correctly. Thank you for letting us know about the devestating floods on the arno river. I will have to examine the geography of Italy more carefully before I begin my unit on Rome with my students. We always talk about the benefits of geography, not always realizing the devestating affects climate and weather can have on a region. I just learned that a severe drought in Tennessee has caused a town to shut off water, except for 3 hours a day. We don't pay much concern to the ramifications until it hits home.

Probably they were destroyed not only by Tsunami but even by the frequent devastasting floods of the Arno river (thirty years ago there was a big one that inundated Florence and partially Pisa). Sincerely I hope that can be found a ship from the first Etruscan times, that can give us a precise indication about the origin of the Etruscans.Brunodam

Comment: I am from from a city near Pisa. The ships probably were buried by one of the frequent floods of the Arno river (thirty years ago Florence and Pisa were inundated by one, even if now there are many modern technical protections). Of course, even the possibility of some Tsunami must be taken in consideration. In my personal opinion different ships in different years were destroyed by "both" the natural disasters. Brunodam

Some people here are saying religion and goverment shouldn't mix. Doesn't your constitution, the Constitution of the US say and I quote "One nation under God". I think if you don't like it you should move to another country where they are free of religion, if you find one.

    • Posted By: Dingus77 @ 11/01/2007 20:37:42

Comment: No, the US Constitution does not say "One nation under God". Actually the constitution intentionally separates church and state. we are NOT a church or religious state. Read your history before making comments like that. This is why there is so much fighting between freethinkers and the religious right... lack of education or doing your homework.

Comment: As a social studies teacher for 6th graders, I am shocked that adults can not discuss an archaeological find that rivals Egyptian mummies found in recent years. This gives us great insight into our past in which our children can learn something from. I can't wait to tell my students about this discovery, but would hate to show them the posting that are so irrelevant to this amazing find. Instead of discussing the conncections the ancient Etruscans and Romand had with so many other civilizations and the technology of their boats, you guys are talking about Religion and Evolution vs. creationism. We can learn so much from the array of boats discovered from so many time periods. It is a time line of events unfolding before our eyes. Please stick with the subject. My students and I find archaeology a key to understanding the past and our future. Please do not dissappoint them. :)

Comment: I think it's a great that apart of the Italy lost history was found. Uncovering the treasures from the past can help; uncover the mysteries of the future. Now, how the crew members perish will tell more about the geography and what can come from the area.

There are many concerns with closing the station, global warming and is history lying about the Romans having trade ships. These are all great factors and the government has its responsibility to assure the public and release facts about global warming affects, redirecting traffic and the history uncovered.

I believe research should have been done on the area before the station was built. The government knew the waterway system was there. With the proper research time and jobs could have been spared.

The main concern is with the removal of the excess water. That can not be a good thing. If there is water still there, the earth as preserved it for a reason. What is the reason? One reason may have to do with global warming. Maybe the area will once again become full of water for the usage of the people. But, to remove the water that may cause excessive damage to the earth causing earth quake???s that can become Tsunami???s affecting the world and even more truth from the bible, the world will end with fire from and volcano explosion.

Now, to the facts about history trading has been going on since civilization/kingdom???s has been established and civilization was established before Christ. Many people think of the Roman???s as just warriors trying to conquer the world. But, before Kings wanted to be Warrior Lords, life was about peace and respect for the fellow, which is a Common Law adopted by the world. Each kingdom should the other respect with trading, to have peace. First, they did across land by feet and then cattle and then by boats. Using the canals as passage the boat/ship where use for good until the King became Warrior Lords.

I hope this passage help many and their answers.

Comment: Global warming has occurred in the past, temperatures have flunctuated for thousands, actually millions of years. This is due in large part to volcanic activity and possibly large meteors hitting the earth. We know that temperatures have changed drastically by reading history recorded by different civilizations at the same time. We can date these records with significant natural events like volcanic eruptions. Unfortunately, we humans have populated the earth so quickly, earth can not keep up with us. We may not destroy out earth any time soon, but why not try to fix the problems we have such as polluted rivers and limiting emmisions. Not only will this help with so called Global warming, but wouldn't it be better for our health. For our own selfish reasons, we should do more.

Comment: As for the ships, I've seen the transit system, and they really need an overhaul anyway. They were breaking ground for the rail when they discovered this. It may take some time to excavate and create hassel traveling, but it's time to make a judgement call. If the find is important to history, people are just going to have to buck-up and wait until it's completely excavated in an area and removed, before building the rail through. Or you're going to have to divert the rail. both will be costly and time consuming. You'll just have to wait. Otherwise, continue the dig around the area and deem what's under the rail a loss. Yes, it's unfortunate, but if the priority for city survival and people to thrive is more important, it's just going to have to be an acceptible loss. Many more things have been lost by circumstance because people unknowingly destroyed it. It's happened for centuries, and it won't stop. Feel bad for the loss and move on. They already accidentally bisected a boat.

Global Warming has nothing to do with peace, unless a tree can vote. Gore's political so it makes sense to give him the peace prize, even when he hasn't averted the current war. Good job at buying a prestigious award. You're forced to share it anyway, and I don't really care.

Comment: JDelaware324, it's sad that you aren't able to see the difference between science and religion. In science we study, measure, investigate, and otherwise look at facts and then we think about the results of our studies in a logical and rational manner. In religion you are told not to investigate or question but to merely listen and regurgitate what the wacko religious nuts tell you to think. Any questioning or examination of what you are told is being unfaithful and this will result in your punishment in hell or someother bad secret imaginary place that noone can ever see or hear or find any evidence of.

Comment: ephorus, you're about as intelligent as your wacko religious friends and relatives. You mistake logical thought with snappy lines such as the one you used, "if you never allow yourself to have faith in something you can't see, then you'll never see anything worthy of having faith in", wow, very intelligent and proves absolutely zilch. It's idiotic lines like that one that your wacko leaders use when preaching to the choir, the choir inevitably yells, "yeah, that's true", in unison. By the way which negativity is it that you are claiming is being, "rammed down the throats", of you and your religious nut associates? Is it global warming that you're referring to? If so I guess you'd prefer your scientists not inform you about things that are negative??? I guess you'd rather have the scientific community only publish information that is cheery and makes us all happy?

The sad thing about ignorant people like you is that you take something like a wonderful scientific discovery in Italy and say something stupid about it like, "Speaking of boats that no one could see....", which of the boats were invisible you fricking moronic idiot? They weren't invisible they were merely out of sight. Even a person as dimwitted as yourself can surely see the difference.

Finally, it is the religious wacko whose mind is closed. Closed and locked tight. This person is unable to look at facts and think about them in a logical and rational way. He or she can look at a question like how much does two plus two equal and answer, "I believe it equals 5". When a person attempts to show them that it actually equals four they inevitable answer, "I believe it equals five." They are incapable of examining their beliefs in an intelligent and rational manner and should be kept as far from government and leadership positions as possble.

The point is, if one advocates Creationism, one is not thinking. Science does not tell one how to think, it merely provides a deductive, investigative, and logical framework for thought. Creationists, by battling science, are engaging in a war on thought itself.

Not to mention that people rely on those trains for daily transportation. How would you like it if they shut down the streets for months, maybe years at a time, so they could dig something up... you wouldn't be able to go very far... your life would be disrupted. So yes, it is JUST as important. and the key is finding a balance... Its not just one or the other. It's to find a way to do both w/ the least amount of inconvienence for both parties.

So I suppose there were several Tsunami's reach Pisa, to match the periods when volcanos about the Mediterranian erupted. But there is certain to be a lot of civilization buried under the mud in 2012, to dig up later, after another Ice Age. But preserving the relics from the ancient world should mean bunkering them in for a Super Volcanic disaster, so they may survive global warming, for the next time the Earth blows its top.

Comment: The floods that you speak of more likely were the torrents of water and debris coming down the valley TOWARDS the sea. Those same repeated floods and sources of silt are what filled in the ancient harbor , formed the water, sand, and silt laden soils, and moved the seashore so far away. Whether these infrequent catastrophes were sudden spring melts, or monstrous rain events, look to the recent history for indicators.

Comment: Once again I am astounded at the level of ignorance we now have in our country. The evidence that the world is undergoing climate change is irrefutable. The glaciers are melting, both poles are melting. It isn't a matter of belief. It's a matter of measurable fact and the measurements are in. The only matter which can even be debated is the extent to which humans are responsible for the warming. Prevaling scientific opinion is that man made emission of greenhouse gasses is indeed responsible at least in part for the climate change. How on Earth did the greatest country in the world come to be led by a religious wacko who won't or can't understand that science unlike crazy religion ins't something that's to be "believed" or not, science is based on hard facts interpreted by the smartest best educated people on the planet. Comment: I am repeatedly amazed and disappointed at how incredibly ignorant such a large portion of our population is. There is and has been for some times now irrefutable proof that the worlds average temperatures are rising and that as a result of this glaciers and other things like extended droughts are occurring more often that they previsouly had. Anyone who does not, "believe" this is happenning is simply incapable of intelligently examining the known facts. The only thing that is in doubt about global warming is the extent to which humans are to blame. It is my belief that governments should take immediate action to greatly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases their countries produce. Arizona Crown you are the exact type of ignorant religious idiot that is responsible for electing people like Bush. You are incapable of examining information in an intelligent, rational, logical manner. It is so very sad and frightening to realize that large portions of our country are populated by people very simialr to you. Your type are the morons who actually managed to force the Kansas City School District (only temporarily thank goodness) to teach "intelligent design" alongside evolution in biology. Thank goodness the science teachers stood up to the religious wackos. The incredibly dangerous thing about having a religious wacko for president is that he has enacted government policies as a direct result of his belief in an invisible man with magic powers that nobody can see or hear. I am just constantly angered and disapointed that in the year 2007 the greatest country in the world has elected a leader who is a religious wacko. An example of how crazy the situation is comes from his first presidential debate when he was running against Al Gore. He was asked who the most important person in his life was and he answered Jesus Christ. The President of the United States feels that the most important person in the world to him is a person intelligent people know to be imaginary. It's an invisible, unhearable man, that all the evidence shows doesn't exist, who has magical super powers. I mean why not say that superman is your most important man? It's just so sad. When did we fall so far behind Western Europe in terms of having a country that separated religion from goverment?

But during the last period of heating, there was no civilization, humans weren't cutting down massive amounts of forest, creating huge landfills, driving cars and releasing tons of carbon into the atmosphere every day, or throwing the entirity of Earth's ecosystem out of whack by causing hundreds of species to go extinct. Just because global warming may not have a huge effect while you're still alive, you have no right to dismiss solid evidence and continue your selfish and irresponsible practice of hurting the planet. Comment: I don't know how a question/comment about global warming ended up on a site about archeological digs in Pisa, but you asked, so here I go. It is impossible to talk about gw without bringing in politics because it is a totally political fabrication with as much validation as the trickle down theory. First, a history lesson. As maggie Thatcher was taking office in the late 70's (don't hold me to the datyes, but the rest is factual) Britain was in the midst of a coal miner and oil worker strike. In an attempt to discredit the unions involved and break the strike, she formed a group to find ways to discredit the coal and oil industry. Well, what they came up with was anthropogenic (ie man-made) gw. Well, the strike ended without the whole gw thing taking off and was forgotten about (because in didn't exist) until the "Iron Curtain" came down in the early 90's. When the curtain came down and the Soviet Union pretty much dissolved, communism didn't go away. It found itself an accepting friend in the environmental movement. This is where large corporations (ie those that can only exist in a free market economy like in the United States) are over fishing, over building and overpolluting everything and the only answer is big government regulation of these businesses to keep them from doing all these things. Hopefully, in the end the business will be regulated out of existance or the government will virtually control every aspect of the business, in the process, making it weaker and less able to turn a profit. Well, enter gw. Essp. man-made gw. Now, the governments of the world, essp. those of modern industrialized nations, may some day be required to regulate just about everything that can be linked to gw. And what might that be? Well, the most popular view is that an increase in atmospheric CO2 causes an increase in the green house effect, which in turn causes an increase in temperature. Well, what creates CO2? Just about every living thing. Taking this train of thought to its end point, then the government will have to tax your breathing in order to get you to do it less. A couple of other quick points. Consensus does not make science. A few years back, it was the consensus of leading scientists that the Earth was flat and the Sun orbited the Earth. When a Lemming sees another thousand Lemmings running somewhere, it has a tendancy to join the "consensus" as well. The night before Al Gore recently received his Nobel Peace Prize, an English court came to the consensus that prior to showing his unfortunate movie in a classroom, they must state that some of its contents are factually inaccurate, like 10 of his 11 major points.
