Every attempt at controlling campaign costs has ended up with lawyers figuring out how to circumvent the system. The public has voted against federal funding of presidential campaigns by refusing to check off the dollars on their income-tax forms. Let's try something that may have a chance of working: no funding restrictions whatsoever except that no funds may be expended unless the donor and amount are posted on a Web site first. As long as there's no accountability on fund-raising and/or loss of power, it will continue.

Correction
In "Caution: Killing Germs May Be Hazardous to Your Health," we mentioned an Oreck vacuum cleaner that uses ultraviolet light as a disinfectant. The Oreck uses microban, an antimicrobial chemical. Halo Technologies makes a vacuum cleaner that uses ultraviolet light. NEWSWEEK regrets the error.

No matter who the Democrats pick to be their nominee, we can be sure that the party platform will be written by Miss Tee AGe South Carolina

Bloomberg Headed in the Right Direction

According to the Newsweek poll, Michael Bloomberg would take 11% of the votes to Clintons 44% and Giulianis 38%. While Bloomberg has only recently begun to gain press, Clinton and Giuliani have been fixed in the media for months. Seeing that Bloomberg has already drawn a fourth of Clintons votes in the poll without the exposure, his billion dollar campaign looks promising, to say the least.
