Zakaria, you're a shmutz. The objective of the surge was to give the Iraqi government time to come up with a political solution to sectarian violence. That hasn't happened; nor is it sitting on the horizon waiting for the sun to illuminate it for all the world to see. Stop trying to sell that magical Bush Elixir and start telling the truth without spin.

Now back to reality: It does certainly matter ALOT that a Republican is elected if only to continue to be consistant in the battle on the War on Terror. We are there, there is no turning back, sobbing and whinng about it isn't going to change it, and every Democrat ( except Obama) knows it. Hilary will keep us in the war and it is time you all wake up to that fact. if you want change you must realize it won't be here for a long time. No new president is able to make that happen in 4 years. REALITY is A B-ich.

We can argue about whether the surge is working or not, but the fact remains that Iraq is still very unsafe, her infrastructure is destroyed and Iran will exert more influence there as time goes by.

Bush neutered military commanders who disagreed with him about Iraq and has now had to go back to them to fix his failed strategy.

Those who jumped on Bush's Iraq bandwagon may have to take the ride off the cliff with him when Americans decide who is more competent to run the government. Yes, reality is a b i t c h.

the neocons got us into this mess and you expect the lefties to sing rapturous arias when after four years of war, nearly 4000 dead and billions spent there are still no goals being met? it's easy to meet a goal that is phrased, "get violence and american casualties down" because there are no measurable ways to quantify the outcomes so of course there is argument over we're "winning". before i start singing bush's praises, i'd like to hear one of you neocons lay out his failures for me, as space allows, then we can tally it up.

the situation is much better than it was. evidently the war is not lost. if the democrats were in control they would have left. then, there would be a real civil war. left wing media can't give Petraeus,Bush credit. they alwats make up some reasons the surge didn't work. BUT it is working. now lefties want to put this great accomplishment to the rear, and move on to the economy as #1.

its really exhausting to hear so many negative things the united states had caused. i hope to hear some sort of good news. i'm sure pres. bush is doing everything for his country, only that, others dont see it the same way. america is a huge country and bountiful, i wonder why do they have so many problems. i hope we all realize that life is short and that we must make everyhting out of it. God bless us all.

I am constantly amazed to see, in so many of the comments to various articles here and at other sites, the stunning use of imcomplete sentences, mispellings and ignorant grammatical structure. It is not unreasonable to assume that when a person thinks he/she has something worth saying, that he/she knows how to say it. Alas, all they do is expose their lack of credibility by undermining trust in their intelligence. .

Mr. Stefflax, where is your opinion? That second grader is waiting for your comment.

Please do write at least a line from this article and than the whole world will judge about your thought process.

The person you are critisizing is a eight year old and a second grader. Do you have any such opinion regarding the article before judging anyone? That itself will proove about your intellegence my friend. Please judge yourself first than think about others. That second grader herself thinks far ahead about the situation in Iraq and for that matter about the election implication in 2008. than that of your understanding. have made

Things may seem to look a bit better because of the surge but surge itself is not going to meterialize in the longer term because unless we take the road of political reconciliation in Iraq. This surge will work may work temporarily but what will be the aftermath once the troops may well be mardinalized and pull back? We have to watch these sceneriio carefully until we decide to do things otherwise.

I do agree that Economy wil be one of the issues in 2008 election but Iraq wikk be the major xampaign issue that many of the candidates have to deal with and many of them have already articulated about this issue. One other issues will come into play is the issue with Iran. So, Iraq will stillbe the number one issue than iab and possibly Economy will be the third most talked about issue in the General elction. So, stay tune until than we will just predict thikgs that may come into play.

Well, the person who has tried to give an opinion about the article has some validity whatever he or she may have presented here apart from a person who does not even come close write something about the issues.

Look for yourself before you judge someone who happens to be only a second grader. See if you can match her intellegence.

How can a war that is costing 600 billion dollars, 4000 or so US lives, rampant corruption on all sides, ratched up oil prices, the Turks on the verge of an invasion, led to torture polices with a hint of impreachable crimes, and dramatically lower army recruitment; not be something Americans are thinking about as our stretched forces standby and watch a nuclear club member self destructed in Pakistan. I may not be the most immediate threat Americans are thinking about but make no mistake children growing up in this time our playing war with new terms like insurgents and IEDs and will for some time to come.

As General Petrraeus already took the position that there is no militarry solution in Iraq but a viable political solution is necessary to bring about some kind of a stable situation there in iraq. And accordingly he has applied his strategy in dealing with the situation in Iraq coupled with the the strategy working with the Sunni elements to deal with the al Queda element and with that strategy being working for the U.S. by minimizing the extreme elements in Iraq. This is a short term strategy for the mment but what will be the longer term startegies in order to have a renconciliation among faction in Iaaq and that itself is the sixty thousand dollar question? Will the American people than be comfortable with the surge being applied or pull the troops partially fro there> These are the tough question that will come in the general election in 2008.

I do agree with Mr. Fareed that economy will be one of the major topics in the General election but again AIraq will be the dominant issue in the coming election and I think that is exactly what we will anticipate coupled with the situation in Iran. So, Iraq, Economy and Iran will e the major issues that we will seein the 2008 election. Ubtil than, we will stay tune what transpires in the mean time.

Boy, another Newsweak 'analysis'. Mr. Zakaria (whom I generally admire) couldn't just say, "The surge is working - Good!". instead, he had to say, it is working, but... 'not really'. "It's kind of working in spite of Bush..."

But one knows that if the surge hadn't worked, it would be Bush's fault in Newsweek's eyes. So, if things work well, it' is not due to Bush, if things fail, it is all Bush's fault.

Does anyone wonder why the term, "Agenda driven journalism" has gained in popularity?
