Smokin' in the Boys (and Girls) Room

Nearly a quarter of all teens smoke, and only 4 percent manage to quit. But there may be good news this week on both the cessation and prevention fronts.

Comment: Maybe the easiest way to quit smoking is not to start smoking at all. Children and teens do not want to be smoking adults in the future, but they are curious and want to try everything available or accessible. To prevent children from smoking we should remove all smoking adults from their way, and erase all advertisement from any mass media. The more realistic way to avoid smoking from childhoodis to take a look at your own child, kiss him, and even you are smoker yourself , you will fill if he had smoked a cigarette today.

Comment: i read your article. i think that just increasing the price and arranging campaign will not help much because i have seen many educated people including doctors smoking like a chimmini. so we have to find other better methods to eradicate this habit from youngsters. Comment: As an ex smoker, I think one of the hardest thing to do is quit smoking . So realistically, if you've been smoking for years, you will continue to unti you are dead. Regardless how the person died. But, if we speak to our children as young as 3 and continue the educate them as they grow. Face it, if you never smoked before why would you want to start now? I love the fact that I save at leat $167.00 dollars a month!!!

Comment: The article ???Smokin??? in the Boys (and Girls) Room??? talked about several issues of cigarette smoking such as its consequences, and its addictive. The main focus of the article was on the raising tax on cigarettes in attempting to discourage teens (and others) from smoking as well as encourages them to quit smoking. Raising tax on cigarettes, in my opinion, might be an effect way to prevent teens from starting cigarettes smoking. With the high price, teens would not be able to afford cigarettes therefore discourages them from smoking. Increased tax on cigarettes also encourage currently smokers to quit, however due to addictive effects of cigarettes, the high cigarette price would not be a successful quitting program. Even though smokers might attempt to quit smoking, they would soon finding themselves crawling back to the cigarettes once the craving overcomes their desire to quit, thus quitting smoking is quite difficult for many. This is why there are available drugs to help people quit smoking such as bupropion.

Comment: More teens are killed from drunk drivers and alcohol-related illnesses and accidents than are killed from first and second-hand smoke combined, yet I see no crusade to do away with beer, wine, or whiskey. My conclusion is that most anti-smokers are heavy boozers who like to berate other people's bad habit instead of facing their own.

Comment: The ways can decrease the number of addict smokings.
The government should control the tobaco companies by limiting the level of nicotine in popular cigarettes which a reason increases the number of addict smokings.
The federal cigarettes tax is more higher on each pack tobaco for consumptions, teens may be immposible
to buy more tobaco at high prices.

Comment: Smoking is very unhealthy but some people dont realize that they're taking a risk to kill themseves little by little. I strongly agree with the tax increase on cigerattes so it might help control buget for young people that
waisting money and losing their life for nothing.

Comment: comment: The problem from this article is becoming more and more serious nowadays. Everybody knows smoking is bad for health. Most teenagers feel curious and like copying somebody. They like trying different things and they never consider their health. I think that raising price and tax on cigerattes will reduce the number of smokers. Parents, teachers and government should find right ways to educate them and show them how serious and unhealthy smoking is. The government had better make some plans and laws to help the teenagers and save their lives.

Comment: I strongly agree with raising tax on cigarettes. I hope it may help reduce the percent of teens smoke, "25% of all teens smoke", couldn't believe it. My father was an ex-smoker, and he nearly got lung cancer. Ten years ago, he was so sick, and we thought we might lose him. I don???t want it will happen to any family any more. We can not ignore when we see teens are killing themselves day by day by adding more nicotine to their body, and they also turn us to be secondhand smoke. Increasing tax on cigarettes may help us get more money for medical fund. I think that is not enough, we should increase the tobacco industrial income tax.

Comment: I don't mind smoking. If people want to smoke, let them smoke. When I was young, I really enjoyed smoking. I don't smoke anymore, though.
I don't know how we're going to keep people from 'eventually dying'. Don't we all 'eventually' die?

Comment: Smoking is cool. That's what i thought when i was 10. Just a week ago, my brother in law said "If you don't smoke, you are gay." However, i feel very lucky that i dont smoke. Smoking is a bad habbit. For those who want to quit smoke, they can. If tried 10 times, and it doesnt work. Let try one more time. NEVER GIVE UP. It's your life, your children's future. Many smoker just want to smoke, they never think that their children will coppy what they are doing. Increasing tax is a good way. If we can put together and make a law. It is even better. No more lung cancer, and our country will be come more healthy.

Comment: I think that raising the tax on cigerattes will help prevent maybe a good percent of teens from smoking. Maybe even this idea will work really well so 50 % will quit which would be a good ratio. I hate cigerattes all my friends smoke them and they smell disgusting ang are gross. So i hope that the law goes through to raise tax on cigerattes it might even help save some peoples lifes.

Comment: I am an EX-smoker. I started when I was 16 during high shcool. I'm now 34 year old, mother of two beautiful baby girls. I have tried to quit smoking when I started seeing those NASTY commercials few years ago. I've tried the following: Lozenge, patches after patches, Nicorette Gum, the nicotine inhalers and cold turkey. It is the most difficult thing to do. I didn't know fully back then , what I know now. Boy do I, as thousands of others who says - why did I ever pick this up? Yes there are some people who really do not care to quit and that's his or her right. So I am really mad that the kids who start to smoke now, after what we know about smoking. So I strongly agree with the tax increase. Let's raise it so redicilously high that teenager would rather spend their $ some where else. Shopping for example - it helps the economy flowing instead of fat-n- ing the wallets of the tabacco CEOs. Yes, we pick up that first ciggerette, but they spray all that harmful and very addictive chemicals. You are hooked. And they have a loyal customers until they die from smoking. My co-worker did. My girls think I'm their hero, and loves me unconditionally. If I die from smoking their world will be over - I have 14months old and a 4 year old. That's why when I heard about Chantix, of course I saw my doctor and got a precription. My insurance paid 90 percent so I lucked out there, it's very expensive. It would hurt if all those quit smoking aids are cheaper. It's so darn expensive when you're looking at the $50.00 price tag on the little box with just few patches in them, verses the $7.99 in Anchorage, Alaska no tax here though, $7.99 doesn't sounds so bad if you are like me - on a budget.
So need to raise HUGE taxes and FDA need to make it that they have to put their ingredients just like everything else is regulated - Oh exept toys from China - do not get me started on that one...and bring the prices down for the products that helps you quit. Even if I still was a smoker, I would still talk to my children and educate them on how dangerous smoking truely is and why it's so addictive. You might be a smoker, but you can help your children make a smart choice.

Comment: How about, leaving it alone. Theres already a large amount of anti-smoking advertising in all venues.
Everyone who smokes knows, very well, the extremlely dangerous risks involved. There are patches, programs, support groups ect... If someone really wants to quit they can. If they need help, then there are a multitude of ways to help. Some people just WANT to smoke. They know the risks, they take the risks, they enjoy it so leave them alone!!
There are risks in everything. Drinking, eating "bad" foods, skydiving, diving, running, driving (how many people a year die in sober car accidents? many thousands), walking across the street or sticking your face in a fan!!!
The point is, the word (smoking is very unhealthy) has been out for a long time and everyone knows it. People who still choose to smoke are using thier freedom of choice. People who drink, join the military, eat unhealthy foods, or even just drive a car are taking a similar risk to thier health. The only differences is in the percentages. Its thier life.... let them live it!!!

Comment: Why arent the powers that be forcing the tobacco companies to slowly reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes, say over a 2 year span of time, until there is NO nicotine at all? That would help those that smoke to quit, and those that start, not to become physically addicted. It is a simple answer to the health problem.... Oh, that's right, without smokers, we'd loose millions of dollars in tax revenue....
