I've read that a soy based diet can raise estrogen levels, so would that mean vegetarians more likely to have man boobs? What about boys growing up in a vegetarian hosehold?

Regarding tivea.evc's comments about Govt. and eating habits and exercising to reduce gynecomastia:

I just want to say this to you - " It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are ignorant than opening it and removing all doubts about your stupidity".

    Have a nice day.

The Health Goverment should control foods that effect to the human being. In France, they controlled foods better than the US Goverment did. However, people themselves have to control what you eat especially fat and cheeseburger that gain their weights fastly. All of those cheeses and fats are the causes make hormone increase twice that make human breast and other parts of the torso get bigger and bigger. I know it hards to do to reduce they favourite foods but if they don't take action for this problem no one can help them too. Morever, they should try to do gym particularly in the morning or afternoon in order to reduce fat in their body. They should eat vegetable and fish often than meat if possible because vegetable and fish are contained proteins and have fewer fats than meat. The US Health Gorvement should take action to control any foods that have bad affect to the people as well.

I suppose if I had breasts I wouldn't waste so much money at the strip club.

Thanks for the article. Reading it, I realized how much I had managed to supress my sadness in dealing with this condition since I was 16 yrs old. Today I am 46 Yr old successful, married man with a child. But there is not a single day - Not a single day in my entire adult life that I haven't felt ashamed about a medical condition that is no fault of mine. All I encountered my entire life was ridicule - from family, friends and strangers. There has not been a single person who was sympathetic about my situation.

Everyone develops a different defense mechanism to deal with it, sometimes, multiple mechanisms. Mine was many fold. I gained weight on purpose in order to explain it away. I also developed a surly personality so that people will be scared to say anything to my face. I stopped participating in sports. Never went to the swimming pool as an adult even though swimming was something I enjoyed. Never went to the beach, I started pretending that I hate beaches, which was a complete lie. Always wore clothes that were a couple of sizes too big. Avoided all situations that might require me to take my shirt off.

I have finally decided that I will get surgery to correct this condition.

For all those who have posted comments making fun and ridiculing people suffering from this condition, all I have to say is, I am glad that I am not you. I would rather live with this condition for the rest of my life than be an A..Hole like you for even a single day. Surgery will correct this condition for many, but alas there is no cure for your malady and in a strange way that brings joy to my heart.

"He's one of thousands of men who suffer from this common disorder???many unknowingly."

RED FLAG, folks! They're trying to sell you someting when they say you're suffering but don't know it.
Exercise and weight loss solve more problems than this, but they are hard. Personally, I'd prefer to risk hard work over drugs or surgery.

That is, assuming I KNEW I was suffering....

I have been living with this for 32 yrs. My self esteem was way to low. I had the talent to play pro ball but i could not even undress in front of the others kids. I eventually dropped out of high school because i could not deal with the stress and hiding myself under layers of clothes. I even wrapped myself in ace bandages. Living in Texas at that time i passed out a few times from the heat. I finally had surgery performed by military doctors and they mutilated my chest. So not in 32yrs. have i ever shown my chest in public. All i ever dream about is getting enough money to have this fixed. Maybe one day i can be like my buddies on a hot day and swim or just take my shirt off and mow the lawn.

Listen, Arctic. Most plastic surgeions give some payment breaks, and most have interest-free payment plans. Except for the big Beverly Hills guys, most plastic surgeons r good people. consult one.

  • Posted By: lenewyorkais @ 11/09/2007 8:01:43 AM

I had moobs for some time, until I had liposuction, which gave me an 85% improvement. Actually, I respect my plastic surgeon for not having over-promised pecs of steel. Anyway, the 2 worst aspects of gynecomastia are 1) getting blamed for it---as if it is your fault u have a medical condition, and 2) the intensity of the cruelty it attracts. People have no trouble telling u in public that u r ugly, a freak of nature, that girls envy your ***, etc. I almost fainted once when someone made a cruel joke in a group of 5-6 people, and they all laughed. Gynecomastia is a problem----but cruelty, ridiculing, and sadism are infinitely worse.

My husband developed this after we married and he gained a gross amount of weight. He doesn't seem to think he has a problem. I suppose he doesn't, it's my problem that I can't stomach to look at him. I admire the women who are ok with it-I'm just not one of them.

You sound like just the kind of wife that everyone wants -- one who has nothing in her personality to encourage or motivate him, lovingly try to sort out these 'challenges' together, but instead to lament in public or castigate him among friends. It is women like you because of whom the divorce rate in your screwed up country is 50%. Don't like something about your partner? Well, get a new one. Well done.

I am a mother with a ten year old son. He 5'2" and 170 pounds. One of the bigger boys in his school. He started puberty in 3rd grade and has also developed small breast. I appreciate this article and the men that have shared their experiences. It's something I'm glad to be aware of because I just thought it would go way if he lost weight. I figured he'd loose weight when it bothered him enough. I will have all of this ifo in the back of my mind. I'm sure there will come a time that I will have to comfort him after school or answer some questions. I'll be very grateful when I am able to help my child and maybe others.

My very good friend's ex spouse had manboobs. He had steadily gained weight over the years as well as inheriting the condition through his father. His two sons - the same ages as my kids - have really tried to keep their weight in check to keep the condition in check. This article is so informative and puts into perspective how common it is. I hope it is better communicated to physicians and coaches in junior and senior high so it's prevalance is known. These guys need to get a break in their teen years so they can make choices as an adult . Thank you for the info.

I was on Merle Yost's gynecomastia forum for years and I think it unnecessarily scares many young men and teenagers into thinking they have "real" manboobs and need surgery. For most of these young men (based on the photos they sometimes post), the problem is most likely psychological.

That's... disgusting. C'mon, guys, it's incentive to stay fit; you won't grow man boobs.

    • Posted By: blind2limits@aol.com @ 11/08/2007 11:18:50 PM

Here we go again: People that are not on steroids and are in better mental, physical, and intelligent shape than you can still have Gynecomastia... because Gynecomastia has nothing to do with fat. Gynecomastia is breast tissue in the chest. Even muscular bodybuilding women with near to no fat on their bodies STILL have breast tissue - so the same for men that workout and get down to an extremely low body fat percentage. PseudoGynecomastia is fat in the chest area that LOOKS like a breast, but it's just nothing but fat that can be worked off or liposuctioned away. As for breast tissue in Gynecomastia, that can only be removed by surgical means... therefore, there's no "incentive to stay fit" because no matter how "fit" you are, the chest will not go away. If it goes away just because you worked out... then you never had Gynecomastia to begin with.

    • Posted By: CCSurvivor @ 11/08/2007 10:59:53 PM

It's NOT about STAYING FIT. DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE??? This condition is one that is documented as a "MEDICAL CONDITION" resulting from an abnormality of hormone levels. We are NOT talking about people who require a little lipo here and there to get rid of fat. Instead, these men ACTUALLY GROW mammary (or breast) tissue. You know the old adage "until you walk a mile in another man's shoes..."

hmmm. ... In this society, what's worse, a man with breasts or a woman without them?

    • Posted By: CBassett @ 11/08/2007 9:54:47 PM

A person who makes ignorant statements.

I have had this condition for as long as I can remember. I dreaded taking showers in junior high and high school even though I was a varsity athelete. My fayher would make fun of me and the kids in the neighborhood were merciless. No amount of weight-lifting helped. I am very lucky because I have a wonderful wife of 20 years. I still wear a shirt to bed though. She rarely sees my chest.

Are you kidding me? This is not news. This is a waste of time.

    • Posted By: CBassett @ 11/08/2007 9:52:05 PM

Maybe it's a waste of time for you. But then it's not about you. It's about those who are affected by this problem. Personally I don't have this problem but I read the article because I wanted to be informed. Your comment is a waste of time too.
