I am saddened that they are removing the bible, as my last hotel room had a fireplace, and the crumpled pages of it makes a great fire starter. Religion is nothing more than a crutch for emotional weaklings. It was created by men as a way to control the masses by fright and other terroristic methods. All perveyors of the myth that is religion should be taxed just like any other form of fictional entertainment. Throughout recorded history, more murders have been committed in the name of religion than for any other reason. Since they insist upon infesting politics with thier narrow mindedness, they should be fully taxed.

I tell you what! I run a hotel for a living and would NOT run any hotel without the word of GOD in every room. It is to HIM alone for my wonderful gift of hotel knowledge, I pray everyday for my guest, staff, and ownership. I will not allow this in at least one!

Let the market decide this one. People of faith - let your hotel chain of choice know that this matters to you. Stay at the hotels that continue to stock Bibles. Avoid the ones that don't. Ask the question when you are making your reservations. You can tilt this back in the right direction. Tom Paine, Dayton, Ohio.

I was wondering if the only hotels to stop providing bibles were the hotels that now provide sex-related items. I doubt this- - more likely, this story has a Christian slant that brings morality into the issue. By saying Bibles are being replaced by condoms and sex-toys, the article trys to scare Christians into thinking morality is going downhill. I am sure other hotels (that don't promote sex) are considering getting rid of the bibles. Christians shouldn't worry about this hurting morality- it is more of a move by companies to avoid favoring a particular religion over another, or favoring the religious over the secular. I think the real problem was that they put bibles into every room in the first place, thus alienating all types of non-Christians and placing their values in your drawer.

Let me see is I have this straight. . .'cutting edge'. . .more urban'. . .'less values-oriented'. . .Less values-oriented, what kind of ass backwards statement is that?! So basically, Mr. Wolf, what you and Marriott are aiming for is a kind of upscale Plato's Retreat, leave your values, morals, character, intrgrity and everything else that is not 'cutting edge', 'more urban' and 'less value-oriented' at the hotel door. Hey how's this for Marriott's new advertising campaign. . .'No values?. . .no problerm. . .sleep at Marriott'. . .

Wow... Religion has been taken out of most everything in the United States.. If I remember correctly this nation was built on it. But I guess times have changed and now we can cater and respect everyones else beliefs and put ours on the back burner... or maybe just burn them and be PC. Times have changed and it looks like for the worst.

    • Posted By: Traunch @ 11/10/2007 2:53:27 PM

You do not remember correctly. The founders of our nation were secularists. not religionists. Freedom from religionists is what drove us to come to this country. the absolute separation of church from state is what has made us great.

      • Posted By: nonseq @ 11/10/2007 4:22:11 PM

Maybe you should check out your revisionist history. All of the Founding Fathers were Christians. 2/3's of them were Presbyterians( which explains the federal system we have). The reason we have separation of church and state is so that the government can not tell us what to believe in or how to believe in it. If they were secularist, then why did they place "In God We Trust" on all of the currency.
Nevermind that the Pilgrims came here in the first place to escape from religious persecution which included being thrown in jail for not worshiping the way that the King of England told them too.
Maybe you should crack a history book once and awhile...

And then they burn folks for not worshipping as they did!

YOU do not remember correctly. This country was founded by Christians who promoted their religion every chance they got. From signing the Declaration of Independence " in the year of our Lord", congress purchasing bibles, opening the capital building for Sunday worship, requiring "the study of God" as a requirement for statehood, etc., it does not take much research to clearly see we were founded on Christian values. The constitution says in no place a "seperation of church and state", just the freedom to worship as we see fit. It can't be a coincidence that as we take Jesus out of our society it continues to decline. It's sad that the silent majority continues to let the loud minority have their way redefining our history and culture.

When the Founders wrote the nation's Constitution, they specified that "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." (Article 6, section 3) This provision was radical in its day-- giving equal citizenship to believers and non-believers alike. They wanted to ensure that no single religion could make the claim of being the official, national religion, such as England had. Nowhere in the Constitution does it mention religion, except in exclusionary terms. The words "Jesus Christ, Christianity, Bible, and God" are never mentioned in the Constitution-- not once.

"Gouverneur Morris had often told me that General Washington believed no more of that system (Christianity) than did he himself."
-Thomas Jefferson, in his private journal, Feb. 1800

The 1796 treaty with Tripoli states that the United States was "in no sense founded on the Christian religion". This treaty was written under the presidency of George Washington and signed under the presidency of John Adams.

None of the Founding Fathers were atheists. Most of the Founders were Deists, which is to say they thought the universe had a creator, but that he does not concern himself with the daily lives of humans, and does not directly communicate with humans, either by revelation or by sacred books. They spoke often of God, (Nature's God or the God of Nature), but this was not the God of the bible. They did not deny that there was a person called Jesus, and praised him for his benevolent teachings, but they flatly denied his divinity. Most of them were stoutly opposed to the bible, and the teachings of Christianity in particular.

Famous Deists, or people influenced by Deistic thought include, James Madison, John Adams, possibly Alexander Hamilton, Ethan Allen, Thomas Paine (who published The Age of Reason, a treatise that helped to popularize Deism throughout America and Europe), Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington

Personally I would boycot these hotels. God is everywhere and sometimes a person in desperate need of the bible would not be able to fine one. At least they could give the people a chance to be heard. The Bible in every room is the same as a TV or any othet new items in a room. We pay to be there soour voices and opinions should also be heard.. To God be the Glory. Amen. Jeanette Kilen, Lowgap, NC

I'm a Buddhist and I pay as much for a room as you do! Should I demand they provide me with Sutra? Will you provide a Koran for my Muslim friends, Gitta for my Hindu brothers and sisters? Sikhs? Jains? What are we to do? If you insist on the appropriate religeous text for each there will be no room for a bed! If you need to read scripture at you hotel room.....bring it with you. I dare say more people have lost salvation in hotel rooms than have found it!

The Bible as news? HAH! I suggest you start reading it with an unbiased eye. It is filled with ancient atrocities and genocides committed by Christians in the name of their nonexistent God. Even the concept of Hell was created to enslave men. Believe what you will, but bear in mind some of us believe the separation of church and state is of the utmost criticality and are willing to shed blood or sacrifice our lives to keep it so. The Gideon's want the Bible to be taken (Its on the inside cover) and I heartily endorse taking it and destroying it. Tax the Churches, Feed the Hungry.

Your focus is interesting. Nevertheless, you have been created as any study of anatomy will confirm by the complexities of the human body to include the human genome project's confirmation of the complexity of code found within the body. That means you have a Creator. Your Creator has said if you will search for your Creator with all your heart and soul and mind then your Creator will make himself known to you. Question is, are you blaming your understanding of the Bible for your lack of finding your Creator?

So you're telling me that not only are hotels getting rid of the Bibles in the drawers, but they're replacing them with complimentary sex toys? Does this strike anyone else as a MAJOR degradation in the morals of people? I am one of the new generation that the hotels are playing to, and I don't know if its the demographic of the area that I live in, but out here in the midwest, the Bible is not dead, but actually making a resurgence among college and high school students. Perhaps in other parts of the nation it is not so much, but here the come-back has started. Take a look at the churches of today, The majority of the congregation is either Elderly or the College-age, very few baby boomers are in attendance. I believe that the looseness of the sixties and seventies led to a decay in religion and that is having major adverse effects on today.

Given the choice, I now only stay at hotels that are free of religious mythology. If I am forced to choose a hotel that insists on putting a bible in the room, I take the book out of the room and set it in the hallway. The Human species is quickly evolving beyond the belieef in mythology, and eliminating bibles from hotel rooms is a terrific first step twards a society free from religion.

Perhaps one day, society will break the hold that religious establishments have on them, but not until we break their tax free profit making ability. much must be done to shake off the superstitions that hold us all back from all of our human duty.. to Evolve.

    • Posted By: rgjk @ 11/12/2007 10:06:01 AM

You do well to speak of society free from religion because all religion is man made. Christianity represents God visiting his creation to provide a way for eternal life and thus differs from religion, which is man attempting to reach God. Now you must search for and find your Creator. =)

I'd never previously considered their door proping ability as relates to the hallway... They're looking more practical all the time.

I've always left the Gideons bible in the toilet when I check out of a hotel. It offends me that the book is present in the first place. They should give you a discount on the room if they plan on forcing a bible on you, too.

Also, 2\3 of you idiots don't know how to leave a comment once. Do you think people will start caring what you have to say if you push the "Post Comment" button 15 times in a row?

    • Posted By: rgjk @ 11/12/2007 9:56:40 AM

Hmmm... this is a most sad comment. Did you know that God loves you even though you threw his word in the toilet?

it is very true that the Bible holds a special place in the lives of many people. But, it is also evident that millions upon millions of humans turn to a different book, or turn to nothing at all for their spiritual growth. I myself am a Christian, and have been a preachers daughter all my life. However i have recently realized that their are sooooo many other beliefs and ideas about life. how can a christian tell some other person that what they believe is invalid, and how can a non christian tell a christian that what they believe should "go in the garbage"? Are we all not dumb beings, living in a world that we do not understand? i think it is more important to be open to what others are adamant in believing than making sure that they know that they are the wrong ones.

    • Posted By: rgjk @ 11/12/2007 9:48:21 AM

Ummm, the Bible says there is only one God and there is none other. The Bible says there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus. It makes sense that God would be quite clear with his creation and most especially if he plans on judging everyone. The law is clear - when the speed limit says 55mph it means 55mph. In fact, when pulled over for speeding you are ticketed against the law depending on the mercy of officer. It is the officer's mercy that you are ticketed for only 15mph over the speed limit instead of the 25 you were actually doing that perhaps requires an arrest and appearance before a magistrate. If we did have to appear before the magistrate, do we plead that there are many other speed limits and it just seemed right to go 80mph because it was a straight stretch of road in the middle of nowhere? It wouldn't matter if we did, the law is the law. Do we think God is less clear than even our own laws? Indeed not. God has made clear what he expects from his creation. We have the choice today to choose to believe or not. The end of our choice is our death when our choice is sealed. That is how our Creator wants it and really ummm that is how it is going to be because he is our Creator and that's just the way it is. So while there are many beliefs and it all sounds so warm and welcoming to be tolerant regarding them, the fact is our Creator says there is just one way. Oh and that is from the only belief where God came down to mankind to provide a way for an eternity of life. All other beliefs are man's attempt to reach God and while admirable in the sense of recognition of God, they are insufficient. There is only one way according to our Creator. So if that is a problem for someone, then don't get mad at Christians who did not make the rules, get mad at your Creator. And good luck with that! I'll choose grace and mercy over righteous judgment any day of the week. And I thank God for allowing me the opportunity for eternal life free from condemnation!!!

Will people ever learn? First people kick God out of schools and now He has left and has been replaced with gun and knife toting students -it must be hard to learn in such an environment! I am blessed to have NOT had any children if this is the way the world is tilting. Now Hotels are kicking God out of the rooms and replacing them with what I can only call pornography- what will this cause?, more rapes?
The more and more God is kicked out of more and more places then the devil will fill those holes- God help us all!

    • Posted By: christopherkidwell1 @ 11/12/2007 2:56:04 AM

No, it won't, because there is no such thing as god.
Need I remind you of the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the numerous OTHER bad things attributable to your god?
Get a life, realize that there is NO such thing as god, and be happy in that knowledge like I am, knowing that the only person who is going to judge my actions on this planet is me.

Actually, what is needed is for Christians to live what they believe. How else is God going to work in society. This issue simply represents the fruits of abortion, divorce, pornography, and other excesses that our society has chosen. And they've chosen it because Christians engage in abortion, divorce, pornography, and other excesses so they're wondering what is the difference. Boycotting hotels is no answer as they're not there to provide religion; nor should anyone expect such. It's been great to have a bible in every room for the past 100 years, but now that's over. And it's over because Christians have not been the example in the marketplace they should be... What is really needed is for Christians to impact their world for Jesus. Will I choose a licentious hotel over one that does not cater to general depravity? Yeppers - as I have the choice. Maybe God will want me to stay in a licentious hotel anyways because he is up to something and he chooses to work through humans and he wants me to be somewhere to help someone. So let's focus on bringing glory and honor to God and less on blaming hotels for not carrying Bibles as if they're to blame. It's sad of course, but even more sad is what this article represents regarding Christians. Some things never change as noted by the rise and fall and rise and fall and rise and fall and so on of the Israelites in the old testament. That is why our world needs a Savior today. Judgment is coming soon enough for all of us. Today mercy is freely available for all who choose to receive it. Let's show the hotels what real Christianity means and then the Bibles will return once more. Keep it real!

  • Posted By: Ranney2 @ 11/12/2007 6:58:38 AM

The next time you visit a hotel, check to see if the Bible is there. If not, call the desk and ask for one. If they can't or won't comply, check back out or let them know why you won't be staying with them again. The law of supply and demand is still alive in the 21st century, folks. Ask and ye shall receive.

One, feel really sorry for those who do not believe in God, who are holding onto as the world decends into hell? I suppose the bible like goodness and morality and care for your fellow human being are out of fashion. I really feel sorry for you guys when we who know there is a God are gone who will you turn to when it blows up in your face and you find out you where wrong.

how very sad,how many lives people have not committed suicide because there was a Gideon bible by their bed in a strange hotel. How many families have been restored. I really feel sorry for those who don't have the strength of god to fall back on espceidally since we live in a world going to hell.

  • Posted By: christopherkidwell1 @ 11/12/2007 2:54:38 AM

Personally, I am glad that this thing is disappearing. I never liked seeing a Bible in the side table in my hotel room. It creeped me out and a few times, I told the housekeeper to take this out of my room until I was gone and checked out.

I'm an Atheist, and I don't like seeing a reminder of a religion that I think is evil in my bedroom and especially not beside my head while I am sleeping.

  • Posted By: calladus @ 11/11/2007 4:58:56 PM

Oh, this is just too bad. I'm seriously sad. I love the Gideon bibles in each hotel room. I take every one that I find because I'm in the Abimelech Society. I must have taken 20 of them over the last two years. I do leave behind copies of Thomas Pain's "Age of Reason" - so we're even.

    • Posted By: Cannoneer2 @ 11/11/2007 9:59:57 PM

For clarification, look up this "Abimelech Society", they destroy Bibles.

      • Posted By: aurorawd @ 11/11/2007 11:33:51 PM

I had read a great story about six months ago, that many hotels were removing the unread bibles and replacing them with Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Which frankly would do more to save the world if people read iit and really applied it to their lives, than the Bible and Xtianity have ever done.

2000 years of brutality, destruction and war... Who would Jesus Bomb? or perhaps What Toxic Chemicals would Jesus Dump for profits?

    • Posted By: Cannoneer2 @ 11/11/2007 9:58:35 PM

  • Posted By: aurorawd @ 11/11/2007 11:31:02 PM

Or you could just replace the corrupted, mistranslated Bible with copies of the Talmud, the Kabbalah, the Tao te Ching, the Vedas, and the Greek, Roman, and Eqyptian mythologies. Since the Bible is basically a badly put together stolen mish-mash of mixed up mythologies and spiritual concepts from these sources.

Actually, just the Tao would be enough, and far more enjoyable to read, Truth and Beauty without all the hysterical violence, contradictory statements, laughable "history" and pseudo-spirituality..

  • Posted By: laurentyler @ 11/11/2007 8:41:46 PM

Why should we take the Bible out of our hotels? Let's not be ridiculous. I am in the 10th grade so I'm not like "Old-Fashioned", but I am a Christian, and the people that aren't shouldn't leave their things, and if they aren't Christian, they should seriously pick up the BIBLE that SHOULD be provided in the room and READ IT!
