It sikkens me to think of anyone having sympathy for anyone on death row. First of all there are thousands with life sentences that should be there with them. If you were the one that was the actual victim. Would you still feel the way you do. Lets ask the dead? They said kill them and quit crying. Oh and please quit making it so humane.

You people are pathetic!!! The death penalty has never deterrred someone hell bent on murder. The French had the guillotine!!! We hung em in the old west!!!! We fried them in the twenties!!!! Now we kill them with drugs!!!! Guess what??? People are being murdered every day!!!!!!!! It won't deter anyone!!!!!!! It never has and it never will!!!!! Put them in jail and let them rot!!!!!! It's alot cheaper than the cost of a death penalty trial and 5 appeals!!!!
Besides look how many people of late that have been on death row are being exonerated through DNA evidence and the recanting of false tewstimony from witnesses usually testifying for a plea deal!!!! It's wrong!!!! It doesn't deter a thing!!!! It might just kill someone innocent!!!!!

Nothing that these men did will ever make sense to any of us because we as a people think with a rational mind whereas they didnt. i do not condone or accept what these men and women have done to be in prison and therefore deserve to be in it. But they are nonetheless human beings. they werent born evil they became evil and so therefore i believe in redemption and the will of the human spirit. No one has the right to kill including the state

Any prisoner will do anything to get out of the execution. They say it's cruel and unusual punishment, painful etc. What did their VICTIMS have to go through? Cruel and Unusual punishment? Pain?. He slashes someones throat, that's cruel to the victim. You dont feel anything when the hospital puts you to sleep for an operation, how in heck can they say its painful with the execution? One way to overcome the problem is let the Prisoner choose the execution method then there will be no questions about it, or Execute him the same way he "executed" his victim so the prisoner can't yell "Cruel and unsual punishment"

That "eye for an eye" passage is so easy to find. But that darned "love your enemies" passage...I thought it was in there somewhere...I must have cut it out of my Bible along with all the other stuff that makes me look like a hypocritical jerk. Can't have that making me feel bad about how I treat others now can I?

    • Posted By: hollandsy @ 11/11/2007 11:07:17 PM

That is most likelty the hardest passage to abide by. I will be the first to admit that I feel a little bit bad when I throw out support for the death penalty. BUT ONLY FOR A SECOND. I am quickly reminded of a tall man with a loud, contageous laugh. I remember our talks about the future and his love for his family. I can almost feel the touch of his lips against mine when he kissed me for the last time. Then, I remember what happened next. He was gunned down by an armed robbery susppect. The same man had served time before on a very violent offense...go figure...and was released on good behavior because of prison overcrowding.I feel sorry for his family. I feel pain for his mother and sister. I feel nothing for this man. I may go to hell for it, but I pray every night that God will forgive me for this hatred, but I simply cannot put it behind me. I hope this man has prayed and turned his life over to God. If he has, when he is executed, he can live eternity in heaven, but if he hasnt...he can burn in hell.

hy i don't realy think death penalty is a good option. i mean only god can take our life .He gave us life he should take it .And about the people who do bad things i think life imprisonment is goo enough.

I think it says some where in the bible,"an eye for an eye".

"Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."
Rather, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.""
        Romans 12

@sandman Without the death penalty there would be no Christianity as Jesus would have lived out his life and would not have been martyred.

The death penalty does not have to serve as a deterrent, it is simply a punishment to the most serious crimes. If anything it should be streamlined so that those convicted have to serve less time in prison (on tax payer expense) and be enforced more often to reduce over crowding of jails with repeat offenders/killers. The death penatly does not deter crime because the criminals are not afraid of it. I say lets give living in a world where commiting murder guarteess the criminal a fast pass to the lethal injection chamber a chance. It couldn't possibly be worse than what we have now.

hope you're never falsely convicted of anything. Quit handing out sentences of 20 years for smoking a joint overcrowding is big business. The fat cats are those who run the prisons and contract with all those such as phone company, food....oh ya why not just starve all of 'em you idiots

      • Posted By: matt256 @ 11/11/2007 10:34:26 PM

you can't have an omelet without breaking a few eggs. There is no such thing as a perfect justice system; however, justice should serve the victims and law abiding citizens not the criminals. As for not feeding criminals, that's not a bad idea. We could put farms around the prisons and make them self sufficient so we can stop funneling tax dollars for quality meals and cable tv.

        • Posted By: hollandsy @ 11/11/2007 10:59:39 PM

Good post Matt256. I used to live near a prison. The inmates there worked. They worked hard...most of em anyway.
They recently built a new prison near that one (it was closed down). On this new site, for the less violent offenders, they must work the farm surrounding their prison. The are required to work! What a wonderful concept. Not do laundry or sling hash, REAL MANUAL LABOR!
Why should I have to support the very man who killed someone I love? Why should the victims families have to pay for the care of the guilty? Do they really need cable? Want to reward them...give them movie nights for good behavior once a month or something...dont let 'em loose! Do they need a state of the art gym? (Come on folks, we pay to get them in better shape than they were when incarcerated!) Let them run laps or do yoga! Dental care? I think adults on medicaid have to have their teeth pulled instead of capped or filled dont they?
They are confined, but they have more rights and priveleges than most of your law abiding citizens do. How sad is that?

Top rated Death Row Game Show!!!!
Allow the victims to determine the death of the convict, have a Vana White type on stage to roll the wheel of torture. Every slot is a way to go; knife throwing, electrocution, crash test dummies, dropped for a crane at 1,0000 ft high. etc. It would be every Saturday night on pay per view. Think of the National Press coverage and ratings! Hell make it a pay-per-view event! I would spend 10-50 $ each week to watch would anybody else? Let these liberal Religous kooks and anti's hold their hands before and pray for them!

I cannot understand how anyone who calls him/herself a Christian, as most of us claim to be in the US, can condone killing another person unless he/she is in direct, imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm or is witnessing the same to another person. I stress the word "imminent." The question of how we put people to death is, to me, secondary to whether we should. Death penalty proponents frequently cite the Bible as justification for their beliefs but the justification usually resides in the Old Testament. My belief is that the New Testament changed the Old in that Jesus was more interested in acceptance and forgiveness than in vengeance and death.

  • Posted By: lovelocklady @ 11/11/2007 10:16:52 PM

God made it clear He doesn't want us to commit murder. The death penalty is murder. Because the government allows it doesn't make it alright. The vindictiveness of people will be repaid by God and as you show mercy so will He. A life in prison is a sorry end to a life but it is natural. The victim gets no "closure" a sorry word for people who think we all should live forever in OZ. Wake up! And you don't know my life experiences so don't give me any of you guff

I think it is great you believe in God, because that is what this country is founded on, but you can take bits from the bible, and make it say what you want. For instance; David killed Goliath, beheaded him and paraded it through the city, and yet the bible says David was a man after God's own heart. I believe David made it to heaven, but yet he killed a murderer.

The death penalty is not about punishment, it is about justice. Without justice lawlessness will rule.

  • Posted By: richard anderson @ 11/11/2007 10:41:25 PM

There is a solution for this problem. Those who advocate the biblical eye for a eye justice should be allowed to publiclly stone the evil doer to death. In that way , those of us who don't think the government should set the example of murdering their citizens.won't feel they have blood on their hands. May the Supreme Court Justices throw the first stone.

    an eye for an eye

Amen.....If you don't want the death penalty, don't torture, rape, and kill.

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also" (Matt 5:38-39).

Yes, the Christian Fundamentalists are mostly the neo-cons--one in the same. It's all about control. Control when or if someone gives birth, control their lives, their money and their end.
Please Christian/NeoCons make up your minds: Do you want to control the capitol or the capital?
    You can't have both.

    • Posted By: hollandsy @ 11/11/2007 10:38:44 PM

I am a Christian and I support the death penalty. Please dont put us all together. There are those who simply think all life it too precious. To a point I agree. TO A POINT...
I, on the other hand, think the buggars should fry or hang. Allow God to pass his judgement as quickly as possible. Show them the same mercy they showed our loved ones...none.

  • Posted By: Yalierica @ 11/11/2007 10:38:23 PM

PPC7, The bible later quotes Jesus as saying:
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also" (Matt 5:38-39).

the wealthy convict can often pay their way out. minorities are sentenced to death out of proportion. juries and prosecutors have engaged in misconduct. the innocent have been sentence to die before dna cleared them. the death penalty is an irrevocable punishment. the death penalty requires a perfect justice system. a perfect justice system is not what we have. until that day, true life imprisonment is the only way to go.

    • Posted By: Widgit @ 11/11/2007 9:52:00 PM

If life in prison is the way to go, you pay for it. I can't afford to support someone who dispatched someone's loved one.

      • Posted By: dabbindan @ 11/11/2007 10:35:32 PM

i understand the costs work out to be the same or perhaps less for life imprisonment. do you all think that executing the occasional innocent is an acceptable cost? true justice includes offering correction of judicial error. life imprisonment keeps that option open. judicial error occurs more often than we'd like to think.

  • Posted By: cboeman @ 11/11/2007 10:25:53 PM

as this government finds more excuses to steal our rights and as more innocent fall prey to this new attitude, the death penalty has to be done away with
