Most of the time you have absolutely no choice in your actions that you are doing since you have been manipulated by media, marketing techniques, parents, teachers, friends and many others. Is what you do realy what you want to do 100%? I have reservations on that idea.

I had to stop reading all of the comments on here, the minds of so many swayed by what they read and see on tv, you cant handle the cold hard facts of life " LIFE " you all should spend more time with your family or do something else that matters. turn off the tv and take a walk, get to know your neighbors. focus on your local community more not what happend a bloodshot airline flight away. turn off the tv and turn to a friend. Unless you are friends, family or neighbors of the people involved in this case, just let it go....

I can't read anymore comments. I thought the article was nauseating enough. Through glimpsing commentary I was hoping for affirmation that others are as disgusted as I am. While I truly admire those of you able to recall cases and events to justify your arguments of persecution, I hope these are horrible events that you made a point to understand and not scars that you've taken upon yourselves. It's easy to see who is bitter by their comments and I'm sorry life is a fact. I really mean that, but those arguments belong somewhere else. What will it take? We've all been upset by this tragedy otherwise we wouldn't bother with all this. Can't we focus on that as something we all have in common? Don't use the victim as something to stand on. It makes me sick.

I recall as a foreign student in the late 1980s in Europe, it was clear that many American students forgot where they were coming from and indulged in behaviors they wouldn't dream of back home. This was also true of other European students. It seemed though that many Americans thought that because they were so far from home, nobody would know of the risky and dangerous things they did. It is entirely possible that Ms Knox is one of that type of person. Her friends here would not necessarily be able to speak of her "European personality"

I was beginning to wonder why American media organizations aren't taking this story seriously. Its very shameful, sad and disheartening. If this crime was committed against an American, it will be the lead story everyday on CNN, Fox etc (a la Aruba story). We should treat other nations with due respect and sensitivity. It is only then we can erase the arguments abroad that we are too self-absorbed and ethnocentric. The extent of this violence mirrors the American society-sex, gun and drug culture. May God help us!

I completely understand that the media, parental upbringing, etc....is NOT the only problem here. It's a whole SLEW of problems. Each with it's own "story" behind it as to the "whys" it happened. Bottom line....there is NO PERFECT human being....and NO PERFECT COUNTRY. NOTHING in this world is perfect and never will be. The television shows WE WATCHED when we were children are NOWHERE like what's being aired NOW. What was the norm back then....is NOT what's the norm NOW. And you STILL had murders, rapes, gangs, etc. They've just gotten worse. Any statistics you can find will prove that. The population is growing by leaps and bounds and that alone will effect those numbers. But some of the trash they air on television ISN'T HELPING!! Regardless of what we learn on television, or at home.....we STILL have a brain that knows right from wrong and we ALL have the CHOICE to either do RIGHT or do WRONG. People would think I was pretty lame if I said...."well the color of my skin made me do it".....or "i did it because I was a white woman".....PA-LEASSSSSSSSSSSE!!!! Right now....the only people I feel for in this case, is that of this womans family and what they are going through. It's bad enough to have to suffer the loss, but having it publicly aired only makes it even worse for them. My prayers are with them and I send my deepest condolences to them.

you are so right, i am american and i am a mother of two. a very goodn example: my sister would always tell my niece things like get over here or ill beat you in a jokeing way. she has never raised a hand to any of her kids. well one day her daughter was in trouble for something or other my sister was trying to get her inside and my niece was screaming "dont beat me mom, dont beat me! now we thought this kinda funny untill child services came. even though we explain what happened even when the child explained my sister still was investagated. good caring parents get in "trouble" for these kinds of small things everyday yet the poor children that are really being abused are put back over and over again to the parents that beat them. untill the child dies at the hand of the parent, oh then we will all take notice and act so horrified even thou in the history of that family there was probably 4 or 5 reports of abuse.
the u.s. is a wonderful place. but the legal system needs a major overhaul!! we have more rape than anyone else, man, gee, im so proud! i feel if it were men out there geting raped evey 5 sec. it would be alot different. where else than america that if a man kills someone he can get out of prison in 5 to 7 years but if a female kills oh crap! they will but that wicked woman in jail forever! completly senseless. if you kill someone unless its self defence and theres NO doubt ( by dna ) you should just be exacuted within a month over done goodbye! screw the rapist, child killers and murders all sitting in thier warm jail cells watching HBO and complaining how bad theyve got it. i guess they dont no how jails are in other countrys are where you dont even get a bed or warm food. spoiled and self rightous americans are. i think that gos back to the puritan days. im gonna go, i think i see a witch that needs burning............oh no the witchs protection agency is at my door, man i cant do anything any more!!!!!
