In the midst of all of the negative press americans have endured over the past four years, this is another that further damages our reputation. Need we not forget that europeans have a violent past which also includes genocide of their own people, division of families via political lines, mass killings, etc. These are all humans, no labels needed, who are involved in an unfortunate situation. One person is never to awake again, and a family has lost a daughter, and many have lost a friend. Let's not lose sight of that as we try to place the blame. I am an American who lived in Europe for eight years. I happen to be black...and the stereotypes portrayed about Europeans is totally false, as I was welcomed into the community and treated like a natural citizen....the old addage is treating others the way you would like to be treated.....and in this case, something went terribly wrong

Clearly these folks, if they are guilty, did not follow the 'do uno others' rule. I think fewer and fewer people are learning that these days, thanks to the media and parenting that has little support. I was a single parent and raised my daughter alone from age 14 mos. until she was grown up. Her father, who, ironically, moved from the east coast to . . . yes, Seatlle, has been little more than a shadow from time to time. I busted my ass to do things right. . . having had an attitude toward my family, and his, 'the buck stops here.' But it was far from easy. In fact, it was the hardest thing one can do. But I tried to get help from the old kinds of institutions and they were pretty much useless. I actually ran from a 'parents without partners' meeting because, after an 11 hour work day, and picking my daughter up from day care, and her being a little under 2, and having had to beg them to let me come WITH my daughter since I knew no one and could find no one to watch her so I could go to a meeting . . . I went with her and the few people there hardly talked to me. It was like I was from another planet - and this was 'parents without partners'! My relatives could not understand the situation and though some did what they could, it was all mom all the time. I also attended the church I grew up with, which provided a little support just because I had an hour to listen to an intellectual sermon while she was fairly well cared for. . . The thing is. There are too few institutions helping parents educate and, yes, socialize, their children on basic civl behaviors. Schools are afraid to teach morality, even though there are indeed morals we can all subscribe to as Americans (i.e. what is ??written as 'law' is fair ground for starters). And even if a single or two parents try to teach their kids these things, if they are disrespected in school (i.e. bullying), they learn the opposite lesson and if the badly behaving person appears to gain from their behavior (rewarded with extra attention in school, or deference, or fear by teachers or parents) then the lesson to our kids is mixed at best. Thankfully, I am a strong person and my daughter would do nothing to hurt anyone else. But I fully understand the difficulty. If guilty, and if not an organic problem or something induced by drugs, then we all have to look at the support or lack of support we give, as a society, for the values that would have prevented this if they were well-established in any of the people who did this horrible horrible thing.

Lazy scags? black people were stolen from there homes and forced to work for free for 500 years. White people have been at the core of 98% of the conflicts this world has had .The snow princess could never be responsible right? This is just 3 dummies who killed that girl for kicks.

Ummm... What country do you live in?

Your argument ( while completely moronic and useless to this topic) is based on a generalization that only seems to exist inside your own mind. I suggest going to school or perhaps opening a book once in a while. The only thing more pathetic than your ignorance are your attempts to argue your point.

God Bless the families of these kids. They must be suffering terribly.

thanks Linloulee for stating "..the families of THESE kids.." Not everyone understands that family members of the perpetrator also suffer from the crime that their loved one committed.God bless them and may they get through this with grace and dignity

My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family!!! Whoever was involved in this heinous crime should suffer as the victim suffered. They do not deserve to be treated humane (they are not human) to commit such an act on an innocent life!

People's comments and viewpoints on here are very disturbing. What does race have to do with this? Even if Knox just "blamed" Lumumba to have a scapegoat, why does this have to generalize that white American women are racist? If she is involved (which it's pretty clear she is) then she obviously is a psychopath with no conscience. Do you really think she is considering politically correct race relations when blaming someone else? I would like to that people aren't basing their views of American race relations on the actions of a person that can callously slit her roomate's throat. Can people just THINK a little?

Its clear that the African immigrant's involvement was carefully planned by the American white woman Knox, to play the role of the "scapegoat." Blaming everything on the black guy is a time-honored practice in America. I believe that the Italian criminal justice system is probably more sophisticated, and more interested in the truth than their American counterparts and will find Knox and her boyfriend guilty and exonorate Lumumba. Whats unfortunate is that the Purigian provential mindset will use this case as an opportunity to express xenophobia.

Oh and I suppose you believe OJ is innocent of murder and also had nothing to do with his latest escapade. You are the worst racist of all dude. Everything is the fault of caucasions...get over it already.

    • Posted By: MERSCP @ 11/16/2007 11:35:28 AM

Quite with the race thing. Get over yourself. If they have evedence of him being there, he changed cell phones the next day. They have texts incriminating him. Get over the race issue and start trying to help others to get beyond it yourself instead of perpetuating it

  • Posted By: FAIRANDBALANCED @ 11/16/2007 12:09:12 PM

Not a problem!! You try all of them and then convict all of them. After their guilty verdicts have been reached, you simply parade them through the streets for a couple of days, with ropes tied around their necks. After they've been totally and thoroughly humiliated, you march them up to the gallows, with a height of no less than forty (40) feet, and promptly hang each of them. END OF STORY!!!!!

Dirty Americans and ignorant Brits. Not to mention the moron Italian and stupid black guy.

Wow??!!!? Trying to get a rise out of people?? How fabulous of you!!! Such intelligent remarks...Your mother should be proud!

Actually, I think that Ken's comment is qutie appropriate given most of the comments here. Nearly half are based on stereotypes, most of the other half are in return pointing out the inaccuracy of said stereotypes. This comment just points out stereotypes of everyone involved. It epitomizes how utterly pointless most of these comments are and how little they actually have to do with the story.

Take a pain pill and call me in the morning. That was suggested after I had a bad hangover. What is the real root of the problem? Too much drink. Then the next question, why too much drink? There are various issues in each of us that make us do things in or out of our own knowing. Deep down inside of a person there can be a trauma, an instance in the past that affects that person's behavior in any given action.

Do you really know yourself? Your history? Why you do things the way you do? Behaviour can be expected if various things fall into place, but to know exactly when it will take place is another issue. My point is when people make racists comments, over drink, kill, or what ever, it is for a reason. Something started the process and it all falls into place (dad's brainwashing...).

I truly believe there has to be something "amiss" in the beginning to have someone influenced by the "media" to this extent. Quit blaming it on the media and parents not being there. There are alot of kids who turn out just fine with a single parent, playing video games and watching TV and movies. That's the problem these days, no one take responsibility for their own actions anymore. It's too easy to blame someone or something else.

  • Posted By: glorycat @ 11/16/2007 12:06:11 PM

All of these comments are so completely absurd that it actually baffles me that people function in society. What does race have to do with any of this? If Knox is really just "blaming" Lumumba for this crime, does that have to generalize that all white American women are racist? Obviously she is a psychopath with no conscience so it is ridiculous to analyze her actions regarding race relations. Come on, people, she is a killer.

The issue here is not the girl's upbring, race or nationalism. The issue is the girl slaughered another human being. Where is the accountability here? You have to remember this girl killed another person outside her country and to boot, killed a person who is not the same citizenship as her. Should we as a society tolerate this? What, boohoo because she's a girl, she's white? she's an American citizen? she think better than everyone else? Get over the Paris Hilton Symptom. She took another life, just stick a needle in her arm and call it a day.

Can we please not forget that an innocent young woman lost her life in an agonizing, painful manner. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Even the racists can agree that this is a horrible tragedy and the victim's family must be in great pain at the moment. Everyone - breathe for a moment and let the racism lay for a day. Oh wait, that would require common sense and compassion, never mind,

That poor girl that died. The thoughts of physical mutilation and loss of your life crosses the mind of many sexual assault victims during the act. Why is there no empathy for her here?

The Knox girl went away from home, and look at what she became. How can you claim to hear your roommate screaming, and do nothing? The Knox girl is plain evil, not mentally ill. Mentally ill people cannot orchestrate and plan a crime like this, and don't compulsively lie. It appears claer the Knox girl was involved. A bedroom with that much blood was not any part of a sex game.
We have a twisted legal system in America. Hopefully the Italian legal system will get to the truth.

what is race got to do with this horrific crime, a girl got murdered for what, SEX, what in the world is happening to our children of tomorrow. I feel bad for this children's family because even they did not participate in this horrific crime they will be blame for it no matter, because they will say it is in their genes.

The media is partly responsible for this trash, with most movies being so violent that "normal" people can't stand it. Our kids are desensitized to violence and rough sex through movies and video games and our economy is such that both parents, if there are two anymore, are gone from home to earn a living so no one is supervising our youth. This is a modern day Lord of the Flies. It's horrid and sad, and perhaps more pervasive than one wants to imagine.

Why does this writer find it necessary to cite that this suspect is "blond and blue-eyed?" Tell me how it is relelvant. It isn't. But of course, another media attempt to MAKE it relevant, to show that this person is somehow worthy of this compassion, ergo media coverage, and to hell with all others.

Also, why does this writer use the term "gleeful" when referring to the Italian and British press? Could it be that this is the info that was conveyed by the authorities, and the Italian and British press are merely reporting this? I am by no means naive about a certain amount of disdain that others MAY have for U.S. cititzens -- but this news report would read more professionally, more truthfully if it reported on the facts.

Now if you want to see "gleeful," you need only look to the U.S. media coverage of O.J. Simpson's latest run-in. That whole case -- and coverage -- reeks. But they're gonna get the man, come hook or crook.
