Weather it's mind of matter, when I feel a cold coming on I take 500mg of Vitamin C for a week and I feel a whole lot better. It works for me so I am sure there is some truth to it...then again it may end up on the shelf with Zinc after some time. Science is never wrong...only new discoveries are made (sarcasm)

Drinking lots of orange juice may, in fact, have very negative consequences for some people. It is LOADED with sugar carbs, the kind that go straight into your blood stream. Over time, people who drink sweet drinks all the time may develop insulin resistence and, if they are suseptable, diabetes.

Do all the reports you want...you'll never convince me as I take 1500 mg of Vitamin C and 1000 mg of odorless garlic when I feel a cold coming on. If I already have a cold before I take it, it absolutely shortens it. Works every time!

I down alot of light orange juice with high amounts of vitamin C whenever I feel a cold or fever coming. Afterwards, within a few hours, I feel 75 percent better. I believe vitamin C definitley prevents sickness if taken in excess.

On the rare occasions that I feel weak and sense a cold and fever coming I drink a whole lot of light orange juice that has high amounts of vitamin c. Afterwards in just a few hours I am 75 percent better. The vitamin if taken in excess definitley helps to cure me.

All i know is for the last year, medicine doesn't help much at all and i have started taking these packs of 1000 mg of vitamin C, about 5 of them a day, thats 5000 mg a day when i start to feel a cold coming on... and in a couple days the cold symptoms are gone. I did a study and found you cannot take to much vitamin C. So you can't tell me it doesn't work!

Typical mindless "report' that is worthless. No wonder print media is doomed to disappear. The governments 60mg is laughable. Pauling himself took 18 GRAMS a day. I have taken 8 grams for about 10 years and have never had a cold during this time. I am 75. .

I just cured a cold with mega doses of vitamin c and increased vitamin d. While this is hardly scientific, I sincerely believe that the studies negating vitamin c have not provided the dosage that would make a difference. I had read where vitamin c has a half life of 30 minutes. I have tried vitamin c previously with very little affect. This time I started the day with 2000mg in the morning a took two 500 every hour to an hour and a half and the 2000mg before going to bed. Along with this I increase my daily vitamin d from 2000IU to 5000IU. I had starting symtoms of a cold for a day and a half and it was gone. My wife had the cold first and hers lasted over a week.

Personaly been taking mega dose for well over 10 years - thus far absolutelly not one cold. Maybe it doesn't cure colds - but as the article at least granted it lower the incident of colds by 50% in my case 100%. And its comforting to know that its has a cancer effect as well. I'm 70 in very good health after being told I would never live pass 27 by the medical profession. Thank You!!

Interesting though this report is, it really does not deal adequately or specifically with the conflicting studies relating to the use of C. Keep in mind this study addresses very generally lower dosages and does not tell us the effects of large dosing upon first symptom presentation of colds or sore throats, two areas where C has been reported time and again to definitely shorten duration of these illnesses.

In the mid-60's I was in my early 20's and suffered a cold just about every week. In desperation - I did not believe in vitamins - I began to take Vitamin C. From the first day on I stopped having colds for two years. And then only because I was out of the country and out of Vitamin C. I believe in Vitamin C! It worked for me.

Well, interesting news yet one should read the comment made by LAwson and Costa as well to have an objective view on that.

Linus Pauling based his opinion on the scientific evidence available at the time. He believed that high-dose vitamin C would decrease the incidence of colds, shorten their duration, and reduce their severity. The last two points have been verified repeatedly and may be due to the antiviral effect of vitamin C and/or its ability to detoxify histamine. Evidence for the prevention of colds is conflicting, but a recent Japanese study of five years duration showed that daily doses of 500 mg compared to 50 mg decreased the incidence of colds by two-thirds. This is significant because this study lasted much longer than the studies previously reviewed, and people were presumably exposed to many cold viruses over many cold seasons.
